Hey guys !
As I said in this previous post, I will need beta-testers for my project. Here's some info about it :
- It's for a website. No need to install anything on your computer except for a web browser.
- It's about StarCraft. You need to know what SC is about and have some replays on your HDD (not too big of a requirement, I guess )
- You need to be serious. By that, I mean you want to do a good job and not register "just to see what it's all about".
That also includes you being curious and want to test every single aspect of the website to see what could possibly be wrong.
- You must know how to make constructive comments. Simple "this is bad" or "it doesn't work" comments are useless and won't help. Preferred ways are things like "when I do this and this with this data, I have this error message (or it does this while I expected that) ; here's the URL".
- Having notions of website security flaws would be nice (but not required) ; if you know what cross-site scripting or SQL injection attacks are and you are able to try them on the site, then be my guest. I'd really like to know the potential flaws of the site before putting it online "for real".
- There will definitely be a second beta-test session afterwards (in late February, I think). Participants to the first session will of course be the first contacted for this second session.
That should be all. Point 3 is the one that is the most important to me : I do not want to waste time or bandwidth with people being merely curious The website will be muuuuuch better-looking when it comes "for real", so just wait. And it's not that cool of a website anyway. Of course, beta-testers will be credited in the credits section of the site.
So, if you're OK with all this, just apply in the comments section. Registration will close on Sunday 13th and tests will begin the next week (ideally, I would like them to start on Saturday 19th or Sunday 20th).
Thanks for helping me if you can, it will be greatly appreciated

I'm up for this, I've got too much time for the next few weeks. I don't know anything about website security but I sure like to click on stuff.

Cool, thanks a lot Yeah as I said, security isn't a requirement because I think it's kinda tricky and most Internet users don't know much about it (hell, neither do I) so I'll probably ask a few friends of mine who are much more knowledgeable than me on the subject.
Oh and having a twisted mind doesn't hurt, too : that helps a lot to find stuff I didn't even think about when developing the site :D

Put me on the list. I like things like this, i was beta testing my brothers application, made so many suggestions he got overwhelmed. I hope i'll be able to help.

You can have an idea of what the site is about by having a look at this topic

The guys as http://www.maplantis.org have done something similar (except it read maps and usm info into their database), and have been using it for quite a while now. You might want to ask for beta testers there since many of them are infatuated with bug finding of any kind.

oh and about the name, my vote goes with Play Recall or Replay Bunker.
You need a fresh name, you dont want it to sound boring. RepDepot sounds a bit formal/boring i must say and as dumb as this may sound, its obvious the first association will be the supply depots, probably the most boring building in the entire game of Starcraft. Play Recall sounds alive and so does the Bunker. Bunkers are associated mostly with intense situations like bunkrushes etc.

Physician : thanks ! I might go there for the next beta session I'll stick with TL for the first one I think.
niteReloaded : Yeah I agree with all this, but those were the poll's results, so... Thing is RepDepot is exactly what it means, a depot for replays, while Play Recall and Replay Bunker are a bit more abstract.

im definitely up for this, let me beta test. =]

The most boring building in the entire game of Starcraft just learned a cross-race ability in SC2, as the only building to have burrow, a Terran building too at that.

Yeah, but look at it this way, what sounds better: E-bay <> InternetAuctionsite YouTube <> VideoUpload moneybookers <> internetwallet paypal <> internetwallet
in my opinion, having your name deviate a bit from the pure nature of the website makes it more appealing.
not a big deal, i just like to analyze things like this.

I don't know how many people you need, but I could definitely help. I just re-imaged my hard-drive so I will need to start making reps soon anyways.

I can help with the XSS and SQL injection part. My best friend has his own web security company.

Well i just read the name for rep database therad, i remember that thread just forgot you made it
I think if you haven't thought of it yet, Different catorgories to post them in. Kind of like htis
Pro Reps SemiPro Reps
crazy strat reps Funreps 2on2 reps
etc and you would put your rep into one of those, sometims i wanna watch a crazy strat, sometimes i wanna watch a good old fashioned micro battle. Sometimes i wanna see an all out bloody war between 2 people with minimum units for an extended period of time, aka micro battle
Then maybe i wanna see the newbiest most hilariously noob game ever played, at which point i would upload a ZvZ me and my friend observed and were literally laughing our asses off during.
But yeah count me in :D

SQL-Injection safety is mostly trivial if you use a query function which automatically escapes stringparams, and in case an sql-syntax-error occurs you can notify the admin (+ if you are paranoid shut down the service). XSS is harder, but putting every output through html_escape_entities helps in most cases. But of course it is easy to forget that somewhere. Requiring all actions which change something to use POST helps against some other xss exploits. But for a replay db xss security is of minor importance. It is no banking site after all.

Yeah, having forgotten something somewhere is what I'm afraid of :D I agree it's not a big website but I want to avoid stupid hacking attempts that would cause me to shut the service down or reconfigure the server in any way.
