Actually now that I write this out I think they might purposely have the gold generation in HotS completely drop off for max level people except for quests. The people who get to 40 are playing a decent amount, and are more likely to buy stuff. Combined with how agonizingly slow waiting on daily and hero quests for gold is, they are then almost encouraged to use real money to unlock the rest.

With LoL, there are of course more to unlock, but your rate of IP accumulation is pretty static. For HotS, there are less heroes and you get gold pretty quickly while leveling, but after that you have to rely on daily quests and that is slooooowwwww. At the same time the percentage of heroes that are free to play is also higher in HotS. Leveling up gets RIDICULOUSLY slow once you get to around 20 or so. You can easily get to 20 just by playing 7 games with every free hero every week for the 1st 2 Hero Quests, but you only get 600-700 gold per level and most of the good heroes are 7-10k meaning you get 1 per 10-14 levels, which is utterly ridiculous. Daily quests alleviate this a fair amount, but no more than LoL's first win of the day bonus. HotS games are shorter, allowing for easier grinding, but LoL lets you grind for as long as you want, and given I'm the kind of person that likes playing 5-6 games a night every couple of days, that's more my speed.

Changing it apparently not so much, but I had the same issue with my Alpha Invite yesterday, and by resetting my password my battle.net account was forced to update and realize I had access, give it a try.

Like why would I want to play HotS rather than Dota 2? And if I want a more casual game in a sense I'm going to go for LoL because it has a lot more heroes and a bigger community. If I want to play something similar, but kind of different I'd go for Heroes of Newearth, if I want to try some hybrid experience I'd go for one the the new "moba's" coming out.

Can someone please explain to me how someone can honestly believe that the LoL model, which HotS is going with, is better than the Dota 2 model? For example, the people who defend this business model make arguments (which are either likely false or highly questionable, but let's assume that they're not) such as: LoL has more players so it's better, restricting heroes is good for noobs, grinding to unlock heroes creates attachment and is good for the game, Dota 2 model does not make money and exists to cross-subsidize Steam. Assume we accept these arguments as true, are we to believe that people honestly and strongly believe that the LoL model is better than the Dota 2 model because they are sincerely and seriously concerned about the financial viability of Blizzard, or that the business model should mainly be determined by very minor considerations in making the game more friendly to noobs (out of all the features and things Blizzard can actually do to substantially help noobs), or that they really believe that LoL is popular because it's business model is better than Dota 2 and that if HotS used the Dota 2 model, then it would necessarily have a smaller playerbase than had it used the LoL model (i.e. the LoL model and having the most popular game is causation rather than correlation). This is why I'm baffled by these people. Indeed, I cannot see how these are the real and honest reasons that someone would believe that the LoL model is better for players than the Dota 2 model. Instead they seem to be supplementary, rather than core, reasons. But more likely they are a smokescreen of excuses with which to hide their fanboyism. So what I want to know, and I hope someone can explain this to me, is what the people who defend the business model are really thinking and the honest internal thought process (rather than the lame and unbelievable excuses they espouse in public) that led them to the conclusion that HotS should use the LoL model, while being completely hostile to the Dota 2 model. How does someone sincerely come to such a conclusion? I want to empathize.

For players: getting everything for free is better than having to work for things unless you like the reward of working for things

Can only buy from Dota2 store (same like TF2 keys.) You don't have to drop a penny in Dota2 as well, even then you can make money over the time you play. Of course it will take a lot of time cause drops isn't like candy, but when you get to the point of getting really nice drops can sell on the market make money, buy some other item you want or can bank it up to buy other games on steam.

I need numbers to back up but Dota 2 makes serious amount of money and it is growing like mad. Seriously, is there anyone who thinks Dota 2 makes no money and lean to steam to live on?
