So... any thoughts from Teamliquid on the new anti-snowballing mechanics that were implemented a week ago? Basically if the enemy team is behind by 3 or more levels, they get greatly enhanced "passive experience" that essentially means one can only ever maintain a 2 level lead now.

From a casual perspective, this limit on how far a team is allowed to get ahead is great as one never feels powerless to come back in a game. From a competitive perspective, there has been much debate on the topic from "we will adapt" to "its horrible" to "its actually good for the game since the viewer won't have to sit through one-sided games".

Regardless of the side one is on, it is a unique take on current MOBA design. On one hand, it means objectives/buildings gain significance as the only means to get ahead beyond those two levels. On the other hand, it can actually disincentivize keep killing when ahead since that experience would be wasted / given to the other team anyway. For example, turning in on Blackheart's Bay first can be seen as a bad thing as you raise the cost of future turn-ins and give your opponent some passive experience who then might catch up to you when they do their turn-in next.

Some links on the entire thing:

I'm ok with it conceptually. Allowing for some rubber-banding is fine as it keeps games a bit more competitive over the full duration. Two levels still feels like a notable lead, and it's not like the current iteration removes the ability to just stomp a team (have played in a few since the adjustment).

Anyway to rebind keys in this game? Frankly i can't touch a moba unless i can set up my keys right.

I've always used spacebar in games for attack, q for stop/interrupt and for MOBA's w.e.s.d. for spells in order.

The ability to rebind keys has been posted as coming eventually. For now, you can't. The closest you can do is re-order your activate-able talent skill keys (the # keys) by drag and dropping while in the game.

does any one know how many people have been invited into this "Technical Alpha" ?

if a nobody like me gets invited then they must be handing out lots of these invites by now?

i've never played a MOBA before. its pretty fun i guess.

I've played maybe half a dozen or so games. It's fun, though spells are pretty low impact and it feels like you have basically infinite mana. There are a couple of spells that can really turn a teamfight though, so those are always fun to use.

I haven't been able to find more than one game after like an hour if I'm not playing with a stack, though.

Yeah, it'll show up in your battlenet launcher without having to click any links or anything. I just logged completely out of battlenet launcher one friday evening and logged back in and it was there.

The game is growing on me.

Just noticed this today on my gf's account. Installing now hope to get in a couple games before bed!
Y'know sometimes people ask me y'know like "What's your religion and stuff?" And I'm like "y' know it's like RTS." Uh, and they're like, "What's that?" And I'm like, "Y'know it's kinda like, kinda like Buddism."

I think that I read somewhere that this game's matches would be 15-20 minutes long each.
For those of you who have played, is it really that quick-paced?

Preface: I'm not trying to flame, genuinely trying to hear opinions.

To people who enjoy this game and have a background in LoL or Dota; what does this game offer that makes it interesting/fun compared to those games? I've played ~6 games, not much, always with friends but I simply am not having fun with the game. I have been a pretty big blizzard fan in the past but simply the allure of playing as Blizzard chars isn't enough to hold my attention. Am I missing something that becomes more apparent 100+ games in?

I did read the header; if this is inappropriate I'll delete and move on.

Honestly, after playing a few rounds, the biggest thing this game has going for it is that it is A LOT more accessible than LoL or DOTA.

Not near as deep strategically though.

Yes. I'd say the vast majority of games are 15-25 minutes. The only time it's less than 15 is when one team is completely dominating the other (0 deaths vs 20+) and that is still around 10-12 minutes. Greater than 20-25 is also rare because of the death timers, attrition of forts/towers, and increasing map objective strength over time.

Lack of lane phase, quick game length, map objectives/mercs, and shared team levels are why I like it more. DotA is completely different and has it's audience. I just don't have the time/patience nowadays to spend 40+ minutes on one match anymore. Heroes is completely superior to LoL IMO since it has the good parts of it (objectives/team fighting) without LoL's poor lane phase.

My average game time is probably just above 20 mins, but still can be anywhere from 12-30mins, so even at the high end it's lower than lol/dota games by a good bit. As for what makes each game fun/interesting, I think it depends on the person.

If you want to commit playing a moba the majority of your free time, I seriously doubt anyone would pick hots over dota or lol. Unless you are at the top of the ladder and doing tournaments, it just doesn't have the depth that the others have, and relies on teamwork and awareness to succeed while game knowledge reaches a point where there's not much else to learn or improve on. In dota and lol, if you spend your time on one of them you will probably be improving for hundreds of games or more, and constantly learning and seeing new things.

Overall it seems to me that if you want to play a few games a week with friends, hots is simple and fun, and rewards your teamwork. Dota and lol, however, are more for the people who want to concentrate on playing every day and getting better without the game being the same every time. The vast amount of heroes and items alone make sure that if you get bored of something, you can change everything up and try new things. Honestly if hots did not have so many maps, I think it would be a dead game already because it would be too simple even for casual players.
