Also of note from the tournament is how far characters like Gazlowe and Tyrande have fallen with no one picking them outside of the first two rounds.

I may do a post later with some thoughts and lessons learned from the experience. Looking forward to hopefully competing next weekend.

Glad to hear you had fun, at some point I should have time to play in it. Not for at least two weekends though sadly. Hopefully they fix the lag soon.

The lag should already be fixed for almost everyone. Beyond not experiencing any myself or hearing complaints about it in the tournament, the following thread has details: http://us.battle.net/heroes/en/forum/topic/12666706552 (does seem to be a few people with issues remaining perhaps).

EDIT: Actually I see you are the last post in there. Sorry that you are still having issues - hopefully Blizzard can fix these remaining edge cases soon indeed.

In my opinion, this is just a poor attempt of getting into the MOBA scene. No one will switch from DOTA or LOL to this game, ofc it's gonna create his own community just because of the name "BLIZZARD".
If they really wanted to make a successful MOBA, they shouldn't have let Valve take DOTA in the first place.
I just hope that they don't dwell on this project too much and let it go after some point.
There is no fate, but what we make.

Seems fun after playing through a bit last night but the lag is very distracting as many have already reported. I appreciate the attempt at making matches move more quickly into team engagements thus cutting down on time in each game. However I'm still trying to feel invested as a solo player through in my "ability builds" and individual performance, but I'm not quite there on the hype yet. I guess it's a bit of a mental shift from item building in other games. I'm sure the fun comes when you build a team with friends and work on your coordination/interaction with different maps as a group.

Heroes of the Storm Tournament #1 Quick Thoughts: Note: All stats remarks reference the following data table: http://i.imgur.com/jEqcS95.png and the following individual round results: http://www.reddit.com/r/heroesofthestorm/comments/2427wh/kings_of_the_storm_1_matchups_stats_and_results/

  • The Demise of Gazlowe: Going into the tournament, opinions on this champion varied greatly. Some considered teams that run him to be a "free win" while other teams thought his ult can be gamebreaking in the right comp. We fell into the later and wasted earlier picks to secure him... and then proceeded to lose most team fights. Teams have become very good about dodging his ultimate and just avoiding wombos in general. As one can see from the stats, he was only picked 4 times in round 1, and those teams that tried to run him all lost.

  • The Rise of Tassadar: Everyone knew Tassadar was good. But good enough to be the highest picked champion? The lack of any bans against him seem to indicate everyone is underestimating his utility in a comp. But those statistics are only a small part of the story as the larger surprise was how the winning team played him. Leading up to the tournament, most teams views damage/Archon Tassadar to be the best way to run him since his Force Wall ultimate is bugged. If a hero is touching it when it is cast, they can move through it freely like the wall doesn't even exist, making it difficult to use (imagine forcefields in SC2 that don't work on units that were there when that ability was cast). The top team still picked that ultimate and talented Tassadar for pure support... and it worked. Really shows how talents / ultimates that have fallen out of favor can still be extremely effective in the right hands.

  • Raynor forever OP: Most banned and almost always picked when available. His auto-attack damage numbers are just too insane.

  • Any Hard Skill Cap Still Far Away: My team beat three other teams in the tournament in practice by large margins that same day. Meanwhile, Idra's team crushed us first round in the tournament with superior positioning, communication, and team fighting. But they then fell to IcyHots that only had one close game the entire tournament (their first game against Idra's team) and would win it with a comfortable 8-0 record. The high variation in skill among the current team indicate no plateau has been reached where everyone is the same skill level and games are won via luck/RNG. Of course, still very early in the alpha and only the first tournament, but worth a mention that is isn't so simple that people who have played it for many weeks has figured it all out yet.

  • Some Are Taking Things Very Seriously: My team experienced a great deal of infighting that hindered some of the enjoyment of the games. Other teams seemed frustrated by their loses as well. Some are doing official practice schedules as 5-man stacks. Despite it being alpha, egos have developed and people are dedicated substantial time in anticipation of this game being big. I have no real comments beyond this for those not following the general scene that some have decided to take competition in this title seriously already.

  • Zeratul Looks Really Scary: Or, rather, I should say Void Prism looks really scary. In an organized 5-man stack, the utility on that ultimate single-handily won several games. From protecting your team from a bad engagement, to catching one or two on the other team so your team can setup around to quickly kill, to just dropping it in tandem with your entire team's skillshots hitting, it allows one to ensure ideal battles. I think the simple ability to manually drop it whenever Zeratul wants might be a bit too strong rather than forcing it to remain for the entire duration that would reduce some of its use cases. Regardless, the only other champion that came close to this role was Stitches, which still showed some amazing games throughout the tournament, but nothing quite as dominating as good Void Prism use.

Recommended game if you can only watch one from the tournament: IcyHots (challenger League of Legend players) VS Team Frozen (Idra's team) game #1: http://www.twitch.tv/din0pandasaurus/b/523710261 (Game starts at: 03:33:35, Picks/Bans started at: ~03:25:00.)

It makes sense, they are working on the match-making system. Can't very well figure out how to improve the performance of match-making when a good portion of the player base is off in custom games. There's a lot to the alpha that isn't just about gameplay!

Great article by polygon, i will just leave this here:

"In 2013 there were between 80 and 90 developers inside Blizzard working on the game. As of this writing, there are about 140 people working on Heroes of the Storm."

For the record, Titan had around 100 before being scrapped and re-started. So this is really surprising news, also if you look closely at the image they show in the article, you will see a new interface!

I like the game (surprisingly) and judging from the polygon article it seems they're addressing a critique I have in that they're expanding talent choices a bit further which is needed (the talent pictures in the polygon article isn't in the game yet). I also knew for a pretty long while that Blizzard was putting a LOT into making this thing work.

Keeping in mind that this is an alpha, I think this game is close enough in quality to attract the audience they're targeting but it's still missing the "hook" factor for me personally. I play around two games, average lasting about twenty minutes or a bit longer, had my fun and call it a day.

I think what's really failing in comparison to other games is the concept of individuality. The main attraction for these kind of games is not really strategy and teamwork, it's showing off that you're better than someone in a team and against a team. It's one of the driving forces in most multiplayer games. They really need to find a work around their shared experience design. I like it a lot and really wish everyone was more strategy and team driven, but that's not how people like to play games unfortunately.

The new bounty system seems promising. I'm really glad they're giving the player who kills, a kill. Pretty much it is the same as getting mega-kills, you get a bounty on you and someone kills you to get all your gold. In this case you don't lose gold or exp but the other team is rewarded with bonus exp.

Other games have this already but I like this bounty system, it seems really clean cut and it could be something that has a higher priority than objectives. It really seems like exp is more important in this game than gold because it's rewarded to everyone and you just need more and more of it to make a big difference. In dota, you feed, you die, but only one player really gets all the benefit. In the end you can avoid that one and go for the weaker ones. I don't know.

I mean, this sort of makes you look badass by putting a bounty on you. But I feel there should be additional rewards to make you better. Like bounties, maybe when you're on a kill streak you get a small movement bonus or some small buff until you die? It should be a buff that makes you better, but also make you more daring to die. I'm really hoping there will be some great visual effect when there's a big bounty on you.

Overall, I like the ui changes but I'd really like them to smush the map for the mines a bit lower. It's just too high into the field of play.

I'm reading the patch changes, generally pleased, get to Raynor, most OP hero in game right now, partly thanks to one of his ults (Hyperion) being OP as shit; nerf to his health, cool. Buff penetrating shot, Hyperion. Trolololol.

Edit: I really like the Arthas and Illidan reworks; never liked those heroes due to weird mechanics. Any thoughts from people who played them before?

hyperion was a nerf? it now evenly distributes on units underneath and doesn't concentrate on priority

He really just needs a better interaction with the egg for the other team. Like, closer to the egg the shorter the timer so it's not almost impossible to actually kill him
