I'm not sure how old this interview is but the news about revamping and balancing SF2 sounds pretty sweet. The sad part of this interview for me was I got the impression that since he said in "the direction we're moving" implies that they're not staying on course for a 2d fighter and are moving to a 3d fighter really sort of saddens me. StarCraft moving to 3d =\, Street Fighter moving to 3d =\. When will they learn that better graphics doesn't mean better games. T_T I thought it was really cool how they CALLED IN THE GUYS from evo. About the fan driven thing, I think this could be a whole new age in gaming and game development since we have games like sc2 and SF4 coming out (which are very fan creation oriented). If these games kick ass and the credit a lot of it to fan suggestion and ideas, other games will see this and copy it and we could see change in how games are made forever. PS- was he talking about a new version/patch of ST?

But I don't think the game will be as good, the fighting genre isn't really evolving much anymore

Even if the gameplay remained 2D, having 3D models rather than 2D sprites would be pretty weird. I haven't seen many 3D fighting games, but the ones I have seen all try to have at least somewhat-realistic body movements. This is like, the polar opposite of 2D fighting animations, where cancellable moves are commonplace. Can you imagine how it would look to see a 3D model Ken cancelling a low-forward into mp-shoryuken into super? I wouldn't be repulsed or anything (actually, I think it'd look hilarious ), but I think most people would find it really strange-looking and unnatural. One of the main reasons games migrated to 3D was to give them a more realistic look-and-feel. Cancellable moves and instant change-of-animation is commonplace in the world of 2D sprites, but it would look very out-of-place in a world of 3D models.

Maybe its like war 3 with a rotatable camera angle but you still fight on a 2d plane. Seems kind of worthless but its somewhat innovative and "a new direction". Like maybe you can fight FP view or 3p view or standard whole screen 2d. That would be kind of cool playing sf like super punch out .

We'll spare you the suspense: Street Fighter IV will feature fully-3D graphics, but gameplay will be purely 2D, retaining the feel of the classic non-EX Street Fighter titles. Now that you can breathe again, we'll let you know that 1UP has scored the first exclusive details on Street Fighter IV. The first publicized screenshot (above, and taken from the in-game engine) confirms the unique art direction for the sequel, as first hinted upon in the teaser trailer. 1UP reports that Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Dhalsim are all returning to the series, although a more complete character roster has not yet been revealed. Gameplay-wise, it's classic Street Fighter, utilizing a six-button control scheme while introducing new moves, features, and locations to the repertoire. No word yet on which platforms the game is headed to, although we can certainly hazard a few guesses. Even more details on Capcom's latest fighter will be revealed in the January 2008 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, so keep your eyes peeled on the news stands. A breath of relief or more things to worry about?

I find myself unable to even take a 'yay' or 'nay' stance on it.
