As a general idea I'm totally in favor of using microphones for Dota2, since good communication is an important part of winning. But the people who actually use microphones made me change that opinion.
I can't stand whining. In my ear I mean. Written I have no problem with it at all, as this whine post proves. If someone writes noob, cyka, you suck, etc I don't care at all and can easily ignore it. But when I constantly hear it I cannot ignore it and it makes me play a lot worse because of it.
I do know that I have more sensitive antennas for it than others. It almost seems like some kind of minor handicap. It's actually really exhausting for me to hear someone constantly whining and nagging. I can't really deal very well with long meetings or telephone calls for the same reason, while I have no problem chatting for hours.
The thing is, everytime I have a guy on the team with a mic, they often immediately start whining far before the game starts. About peoples hero choices, about peoples lane choices etc. Or they start friendly and constructive but eventually they go in whining mode too. Somehow it always feels like "I'm the guy with the mic so I tell others how to play, if they don't I will keep whining all game until they do what I say" It doesn't really matter if people are doing a great job or not. Well the whining is much more severe when losing of course.
I can't change them, so I have to change my own situation. Which I did, a bit drastically I told myself, if someone uses a mic and whines 3 times in a row without saying anything constructive or helpful I mute them. Turns out that's easily 90% of the times if not more.
Still, Dota got way more fun for me because of the silence. Instead of a whining guy I now only hear Dota and my music in the background and enjoy the game much more.
But it's not really a good solution, because so much communication is lost
I wonder if anyone else has this problem and how they deal with it.

My favorite is when they start really flaming they switch to text chat for some reason .
The way I deal with it is by muting annoying people, can't really do anything else.

Just think if you had to live with that person. At least online we have mute button.

My brother is one of those people. I have the great pleasure of hearing him constantly bitch at his Dota teammates through the wall while trying to do homework. :/

For it depends how I feel for the day. Sometimes I can tolerate it for the sake of open communication but then when it starts to hinder how well I play, then I just have to mute and listen to my beautiful music. Just gotta do what you need to enjoy the game, I guess!

1. People are gonna do what they're gonna do, so if they start getting on your nerves just mute them and be done with it. Not worth getting to riled up over something like that. 2. Be very thankful that we don't have to deal with the complete shitstorm that is Call of Duty and mics. That scene is absurd.

I just mute all audio. It is amazing how much better I do. Spamming text? Mute it also.

I mute for first offence in text. Keep volume so I don't hear mics. I even removed the symbol in the corner when somebody is speaking. So I agree with you. DotA is of course better when played using a mic so you can use hotkeys. But for general pub games it isn't an important issue due to pings.
If you ever want to truly try for a win you need to queue as 5 people and would use a third party voice solution anyhow. I find playing like this more exhausting and burned out on it.
Edit, the main reason I play on EU servers is that nobody expects you to hear them. In USE it is more often the case that people assume you can hear them or even notice they are speaking.

If someone gets annoying, everyone can start screaming "ECHO ECHO ECHO" until they stop.
