Moving to a new country: Phones?

Tazza Korea (South)1678 Posts August 03 2013 09:19 GMT #1 In less than a month i will be moving to hong kong for university. At the same time, im looking to buy a new phone. The question i have is, should i buy a new smartphone in korea, or buy one when i get to Hong Kong. If i was to buy a phone in korea, i would buy the unlocked version of the smartphone. Right now im looking mostly at the iphone 5, but it does seem expensive at 650$(unlocked). I guess i wouldnt be traveling much but i probably would travel back and forth from korea to Hong Kong during vacations. Should i just get the phone with a billing plan in Hong Kong, or should i buy an unlocked phone and use SIM cards?

I would buy the unlocked one and use sim cards it ends up being cheeper if you are useing it in multiple countries, as rates for phone companies outside of thier user area is crazy expensive.

Blisse Canada3710 Posts August 03 2013 10:49 GMT #5 Phones in Hong Kong are really cheap from what my cousins tell me, so unless it's cheap in Korea I would wait until then. You can get decent prices on phone plans too. Everything in Hong Kong in general is really cheap T_T but I hope you have someone who speaks great Hong Kong Cantonese if you want to haggle, or just to find the best places/prices.

The iphone will be the same price or cheaper and then get on a plan because the rates will be better. I'm in HK about 10 days out of the month and its worth it to have a separate phone on a plan rather than prepaid imo.
