Old Thread
Hi TL. It's been a long freaking time (exactly 1 year) since I've posted anything but I figured I let you all know I am still alive (and lurking mostly) and working at Riot Games.
Riot is an interesting company. I've never really been part of a company that is so player-focused. I've worked with Target, GameStop, and Sony as my previous jobs. At Riot, it's pretty insane all the behind-the-scenes resources dedicated to the players that I cannot tell you guys (due to NDA).
As a general poster pre-Riot, I would occasionally read through General Discussion and look for all the "red" posts. Some of my initial feelings were like "okay, cool response, but no action has been taken." Sometimes they would actually change something which was pretty cool, too. Being at Riot, I can assure you guys that Reds are always reading and yes, there are times when they don't take action but they will talk/discuss a lot of major points of contention internally before deciding to move forward or not. Some hotly debated topics have been... Darius, Honor Initiative (how do we promote positive players instead of punish negatives), Xmas Katarina Recall, and the Athene situation.
Haha, I just realized the phone interviewer from the old thread is Milkcow. He's such an awesome guy. And the FFT lover is FeralPony, who is awesome as well.
Stuff that I've done at Riot as a Gameplay analyst: - provide balance and/or design feedback for all champions from zyra -> lissandra. No idea how badly I wanted to talk about Lissandra, or the intro music for Vi (done inhouse) - a lot of playtests with season 3 items/masteries/jungle
Stuff that I've done at Riot as my current position (QA Analyst. I transferred off gameplay after Vi): - Can't say right now but I'll let you guys know later.
Stuff that I'll be working on in the future at Riot (not sure when): - eSports statistics! (did you guys know in NA LCS summer split, the first team to take baron wins 66% of the games? This is a pretty simple stat to track, but Riot can do better!) I'm hoping to level up the crapppppp outta the eSports statistics on the website as well as during broadcast. How cool would it be if Riot could show a graph immediately after a teamfight that shows who had the highest DPS for that fight? - other really awesome stuff that I can't say right now but will let you guys know later ^_^
Riot is probably the best company I've worked with. I think the major difference is the internal company culture/environment, and how hard Riot strives to put the player first.
TL is still among the best websites and communities. God damn, I've been here for 4.5 years...Such awesome content is being produced here we might as well invade and takeover Riot =)

Glad you are doing well with Riot Games! Looks like TL members have both good experiences and bad experiences there.

Awesome, hope you continue to help improve Riot! Seems like you have fun too.

Oo very interesting to hear back from you. I remember reading some old blogs of yours I think!

I'm so goddamn jealous you have no idea. Cool stuff man.

How many "bigger" Rioters read TL? Is it a common source of information, or generally obscure?
|
I really hope Riot lets you keep making these blogs, and maybe even share more of your experiences that you normally wouldn't. I've always been curious, but understanding, as to why large gaming communities don't have people in the industry posting a lot about their work in the forums - especially new hires who are seeing the other side for the first time. You're sharing some great insight.

Thanks for the blog. Do it more than once a year. Cmon now, you know you want to do it.

This is pretty cool, thanks for posting. Does Riot have in house legal counsel?

Cool blog man. I ran into FeralPony in solo-queue few times, real nice guy.

If it weren't for university I would have been jumping on the Riot jobs opening up in Sydney ASAP.

Very neat, someone I use to work with actually went to Riot games.

Ryut pls.
What is your typical day? Do you play LoL every day? Are there free drinks/food?
QA is doing a good job at Riot. Little things every patch make the game more enjoyable. The balance people suck and do needless changes that make the game less fun

Either that, or he was getting eloboosted or something, I am unsure of the facts. The main debate though, was among our community team and player behavior and how we wanted to address "banning him publicly (like iWilldominate)" or not, etc.

I personally try to refer the eSports department (Magus, etc) to our coverage since TL coverage is fucking sweet. (Battle Reports are huggeeee influences for guys like Jatt aka you should read his article on the eSports website)

Or waiting for developers to finish their stuff so I can test. Then giving feedback about their stuff. The downtime is spent on w.e I want (writing up test plans, playing LoL, etc). There are free drinks/food in the form of coffee, tea, milk, cereal, random munchies, and fruit.

But the stuff I've talked about here has already been released / not company secrets, so I think I'm in the clear.

I would highly recommend applying since the Sydney office is brand new and you will be on ground zero of an awesome community there.
