"Hey man, you got any money?" "Uh, no." "C'mon man, we just need a little bit." At this point one of them stepped in front of me with his hand in his sweater pocket. "Hand it over man, I'm packin'" "No, that's your finger." "No way man, I'm serious. Hand it over." "How about... no. And that's definitely your finger" "C'mon man, don't make me do dis." He never took his finger out of his pocket, which wasn't even a large enough pocket to conceal a gun in anyway. I reached into my pocket and grabbed some change (pennies nickels and dimes) maybe around fifty cents. I clenched it in my fist and then threw it into the street. An then, OMG they ran into the street and chased after all the coins! So worth the fifty or so cents.

I heard one of them said "stop" when i walked into them, but i kept walking and act like i didnt hear anything. I thought that was probably the smartest thing to do. Compare to muggers in china this is nothing. i came across ppl that would shout stuff like "stop or i fucking kill you" and they would search your underwear for money -_- those assholes are much harder to deal with.. Got any experience to share? You should have closed your eyes too.... maybe say something along the lines of "Theres no place like home, theres no place like home."

Got any experience to share? Playing music is one of the highest risk things you can do if you want to get mugged. That is why they always tell women in urban areas not to listen to music when walking because it makes them more vulnerable. You were lucky because you saw them right away, but if they had run after you, you wouldn't have heard a thing. They weren't really dangerous. About pulling a knife, stupid idea unless you are highly trained. When your adrenaline kicks in, you lose all fine motor control (like your fingers) and are basically reduced to your limbs. You are not going to be bruce lee, you are just going to flail about with it and probably get stabbed with your own shit.

Only time I ever almost got mugged is when I was leaving this campus in a really bad area(jane/finch) and some nigger starting walking behind me and goes "come here man get over here." At this point I already knew something was up so I walked close to the road and turned around and yelled in his face"WHAT?". My plan was if he had a knife to bolt accross the street.. but he pussied out and goes "nevermind man" and walked away. If he had a gun I guess I would have given him some money. But I would have tried to follow him after while calling the cops.

Do you have any first-hand or second-hand experiences of this phenomenon? Curious, as a matter of history. Even though you say you have never been victimized, I assume you saw things which made you conscious of this fact. Bascially I am interested in the issue of social cohesion in the stage of political breakdown of the Soviet state. Well Moltke, this phenomenon happened here also. After 89, the criminal rate was sky high. People were not used to this stuff and the coruption of the police started, the police got afraid of interfering with mafias etc. Before 89, it was kind of simple (over here at least). You were never afraid of going alone at night, even with money on sight. The works thing that could happen to you was either meet with militia (that's how it was called) and waste 10min on answering questions and fullfiling a declaration of what you were doing there, either meet some gypsie who would beat you, take your money, you go to the police, get called at the station the second day, you recognise the gypsie which either get beat up like hell and into jail for some years or beat to death. As a social behaviour before 89 people were actually acting like a community, acting in the name of common sence and good education. If you're really interested by all of this, just pm me, i'd love to share you my thoughts as a sociologist.

3 months ago, i got beat up by 2 guys stealing my mobile phone (actually, just half, rofl). I was talking at phone on the street when 2 guys coming from behind hit me down, then a little fight (meaning i got beat up bad for not letting the phone go and trying to get up) and finally one managed to pluck the phone out of my hand... a part of it remaning in my hand, that's how hard i was holding it .

First, be a good witness. If you're getting mugged, hand over your stuff, and at the same time take note of their appearance. How tall are they? If you're a bad judge of height, like myself, take note of whether they're taller or shorter than you are, and that way you have something to compare it to. How heavy are they? How do they carry themselves? What is their hair color and style? What kind of clothing do they wear? Second, you need to train yourself to be more aware of your surroundings. A lot of people that get mugged get mugged simply because they weren't very intelligent, or they weren't paying any attention. Remember the diner scene from The Bourne Identity, where Bourne is describing his heightened sense of awareness? That's the type of things I'm referring to. You should know what is going on around you at all times. If you see any suspicious people, change your course of direction. If they change theirs to intercept yours, take out your fucking phone and call 911 immediately. Third, know how to defend yourself. This means you need to know how to throw a punch, and what areas of the body to aim for. I've never been in a fight, nor do I ever intend to, nor have I ever had any formal training other than my dad and some former friends showing me how to throw a punch and do a few simple blocks, throws, etc. Hitting the nose, joint of the jaw, or the temple is your best bet. Some people have suggested carrying a weapon on you at all times. That's a bad idea, generally. First, not all weapons are legal in all parts of any given area. Second, if you don't know how to use said weapon, it's more of a danger to yourself than it is to your aggressor. So, don't carry a knife for self-defense unless you know how to use it. In order to use a knife on an aggressor, you have to be close enough to cut them, obviously. This means they're close enough to take it from you, and use it against you. I'm sure you know where I'm going with this. If you want to carry a gun, well, you need to check your state laws. The laws vary by state, and to the best of my knowledge very few other countries allow the carrying of a concealed weapon. Again, you'd better know how to use your weapon. I think it might be a better idea to learn how to use everyday objects that won't get you in trouble to your advantage. For example, some women carry around a brush with a sturdy handle to it to use to strike. Just be creative. Or, you can just buy something meant for self-defense. Cold Steel's Sharkie and Koga are potentially very dangerous, as is Monadnock's Autolock Jr. Again, I want to stress that you need to assess the situation before you act. Note: I'm not a lawyer. None of this is legal advice, etc. I'm not an expert on this stuff; this is my own personal opinions on the subject.
