Ryan Whitney @ryanwhitney6 Wow you got verified @89SGagner… Congrats. I feel bad for the ice cream bar that you’re gonna demolish on the plane to San Jose though Sam Gagner @89SGagner @ryanwhitney6 Wonder if it will taste as good as a Derek Morris right hook? Ryan Nugent-Hopkins @RNH_93 @89SGagner @ryanwhitney6 wow that was ruthless

Morris has always been an overpaid and overrated hack and is a fucking idiot for doing that last night. I guess they really can't suspend him for it but I hope the Oilers send some plugger to knock his teeth down his throat next time

Teams that need are maybe like Toronto, Florida, NJ next year if Marty retires, NYI, Edmonton, perhaps Chicago... maybe SJ? Even a few of those are stretches. Florida's got that kid whose name escapes me atm, Crawford isn't good but he is still young and has plenty of time to get better. SJ, Niemi ain't great by any means, but the rest of the team is already solid and he holds it down well enough. Even beyond need, he's got a couple things against him. He's gonna be 34 by season's end, and while his cap hit is fine now (5.3 for him is very solid) the issue is what that looks like at the end of his 10 year contract. He's gotta be on the down swing of his career or starting it soon. Who the hell wants to be saddled with a 5.3/10 deal for a 37 year old keeper who is declining? Plus, he publically talked about getting traded. That doesn't help value either i dunno, gillis seems to be asking for the moon (I think he asked for a pick, Kadri and gardiner or someone else from the leafs??) and their fan base naturally thinks he is worth the moon.

I dunno, give it another week and Canucks fans will be back to booing Lu out of town ;-). edit: And I don't know how much truth there is to what Gillis is saying anyways. The Sedins take like 8/10 offensive faceoffs for Vancouver (and why shouldn't they?) and are always put out against the weakest available competition (when possible). Hodgson didn't get anything nearly as soft as those two when in Vancouver. Sounds like a guy saying things to save face when people were originally confused by the trade. "He's not that good... he's a cry baby... Luongo's face is too pointy..." etc.

also, here is a quote "He's working his balls off." - Cody Franson on Phil Kessel's effort despite not scoring.

I said it before and I said it again. The Leafs don't need Lou. We have plenty of capable goaltenders and there is no way you'd ever get Gardiner let alone Kadri for him. The only way I see Gillis making a deal is if a team is in such dire need (I don't know how any team could be in dire need this season with the upcoming draft). Heck I even overheard analysts talking about Washington? Heck no. They have two solid guys in net too. Goaltending isn't the Caps problem. Crawford and Emery is working out just fine in Chicago atm so I don't see that going down either. NYI would need to buyout you know who and in return get another stupid contract? I don't know man. It is the Islanders after all. Only likely scenario I can see happening is something in Florida as long as Florida keeps losing. I don't think it's changed much because I like Devan Dubnyk in Edmonton as well. P.S. Gardiner is fucking good. If you've seen him play enough you would know. On February 02 2013 01:34 QuanticHawk wrote: I still think that trade was retarded. I agree, his stats weren't any more inflated than other forwards who have a knack for scoring. More importantly, even if they were inflated, the point is that he clearly has talent. Kassian was pure potential and thus far, outside of this year while riding shotgun with the Sedins for 6 or 7 games (which will inflate any assclown's stats), he hasn't lived up to it. If he keeps it up over the course of the season and proves he can do more than chip in easy shit from the Sedins, then it becomes a fair trade. also, here is a quote "He's working his balls off." - Cody Franson on Phil Kessel's effort despite not scoring. I sit a few rows back from behind the Leafs bench at center ice. The guy had six shots blocked because you know the goal scorer's mentality. On one break he had a great line to give it to JVR to put it at the back of the net but instead he decided to take it glove side. You don't normally see Kessel throw his body weight let alone Ovie but last night both of them were doing it. They both had a few good ones. Anyway, last night they both played well. Best game of the season for both of them by far even though Ovie was on the bench for extended periods because Washington took so many god damn awful penalties. Like I said, Kessel took a lot of stupid shots and both their tendencies were on full display once again last night. There were a few plays Kessel did make last night that made him a little more unpredictable. For instance, when he got to the line he finally stopped and let Bozie and JVR get position where he handed it off and then he cut towards the back of the net and then back to the front of the net where he was all alone. If they got it to him it was a easy tap in. Then there was that play where he missed the empty net from the blue line derp. He did have a lot of opportunities and like I said it was his best game of the campaign thus far so I have no beef with Franson's comment. I liked some of what I saw from him last night. I just wish he would stop taking those stupid shots all the time and seeing more unpredictable plays.

Toronto isn't going anywhere soon. They'd still have a crappy blueline with him. Edmonton's blueline is still very sub par and Dubnyk it can be argued that he'd be sufficient with decent defensemen in front of him. And even as good as their kids are I still think they're at least another few years from being a legit threat. Better off than Toronto but not much. NYI, I wish they were better because they got a couple of really fun players to watch, but they're completely outclassed by everyone in their division and the best they can hope for is like an 8 seed. Lu wouldn't change a lot there. Florida is quite a ways from being a real threat. That was a fluke last year. Plus, Markstrom could be very good and why delay him for so long? Chicago and NJ are the only teams out of those mentioned that that are legitimately very good teams that could use a goalie. Even then it's debatable. Crawford is ok but the rest of the team is so solid that it really doesn't matter much. They're gunning for that Wings approach of be good everywhere else and you don't need a stud goalie. NJ only needs Lu when Marty retires. That could happen next year. It could also happen in 2-3 years becuase he's got all that extra energy in reserve around his fat gut. They won't force marty out for Lu.

They won't force marty out for Lu. Dude I already wrote you off when we spoke about Toronto's Blue line. Last night sure we outshot Washington 2-1 but a lot of those shots were perimeter and anytime Washington broke our zone they looked dangerous because a lot of those shots were getting to the net and there were plenty of rebounds to be had. This team has more than enough capable D guys. It comes down to the forwards giving them proper support and the team not getting down on themselves when they miss an assignment and stop skating. So far, we've maintained good control of puck possession and using our speed to get calls going our way. I'd like to see the boys work more on the forecheck instead of taking stupid perimeter shots. I was pleased with what Randy said last night as well because it's everything I've been preaching on their PP unit. They bobble the puck way too much and take too much time. They have to get it right off the stick astat. In time I'm sure the team's D will get the respect they deserve as long as they keep their head's in the game. Carlyle is still playing Phaneuf and Kostka a ridiculous amount as well. Phaneuf has the 2nd most-ice time in the league at the moment which is frigging nuts. He has little to no control over his slapshot and he always aims it way too high. I think he should be scaled back to Kostka's playtime and shit I almost freaked out when I believe it was Ward or Wolski got behind our d and Kostka stopped the puck right before it got to him on the blue crease. The Leaf Blue line is fine. Our shot blocking could use some work and I still want Reimer to cut down on the rebounds.

Now, if we're to ignore everything about how the defense, on paper, is pretty bad and assume they aren't, is anyone still making the argument that this team doesn't need a significant upgrade in net?

Keep in mind that this is the team that gave up the 2nd most goals in the NHL last season. To say that the defense is fine is to put a reasonable amount of blame on the goaltending. And Toronto finished next to last in 2011-2012 in team save-percentage, an abysmal 0.898. This year, we are already seeing the emergence of a similar trend, with the Leafs rocking the 24th spot in team save-percentage. Now, if we're to ignore everything about how the defense, on paper, is pretty bad and assume they aren't, is anyone still making the argument that this team doesn't need a significant upgrade in net? Maybe you should read the comments I made several pages back. I was pretty thorough and it goes way beyond who was in goal. I made four posts with regards to the Leafs D and I'm not saying they're top ten in the league. There are many things different this year. You guys need to stop dwelling on the past because it's just that. To sum it up their roster is completely different, Carlyle is holding everyone accountable for their own end unlike Wilson who had them playing run and gun on the rush and Reimer is actually healthy this year. They will certainly be a lot better than last year's collapse. It's a good young hockey club. Something refreshing for once. On January 27 2013 00:51 JimmyJRaynor wrote: the ice is better in Russia... end of story. 2 quick examples, last time i was at the Bell Centre it was 20 C like 30 metres away from the ice. same thing at the ACC.. the ice at the ACC is sometimes average and sometimes bad. once Ovechkin gets accustomed to the crap ice surfaces in the NHL he'll stop falling over. Last night the ice was so fucking bad. It's because it was like 17 degrees Celsius the day before in Toronto (a new record). Every commercial break they had a handful of guys with big shovels on the ice because it was slush. After seven minutes of play it would look like they played twenty. It was really, really bad. I've seen it worse but last night shesh.
