Kind of a boring game considering the hype that went into it. It didn't really seem like either side brought more than one line to play. Happy for Lou though, who knew we could win shootouts?

Luongo gets 4th start in a row, making Schneider the most expensive back up in the NHL after Khabibuliln. But at least everyone on the Canucks has a pretty positive attitude about it, and if Kesler cleared for contact there wont be any kind of grand bargain "Lets get Danny Brier out of Philly and a 2nd rounder of Corey" type of deal. Too bad for my fantasy team.

Why wouldn't they? Having both never really hurt the club in all honesty (and the ink on Schneider's new extension is still drying). All the boys get along so they have no reason to be negative when they're winning games.

Who would have thunk it? Not I. Props to the Habs for getting their mojo going.

Rangers get Nick Palmeri and Darroll Powe for Mike Rupp. no idea why anyone wanted old and slow Rupp, but the Rangers really can use any depth they can muster at this point with Cally and Kreider out

Trading with a club that's a goalie away from being great is the only move that makes sense because of his age. You figure you're guaranteed a solid 3-4 year window of high level play from Lu and anything after that is icing on the cake. Problem is, few teams fit that bill

Toronto isn't going anywhere soon. They'd still have a crappy blueline with him.
Edmonton's blueline is still very sub par and Dubnyk it can be argued that he'd be sufficient with decent defensemen in front of him. And even as good as their kids are I still think they're at least another few years from being a legit threat. Better off than Toronto but not much.
NYI, I wish they were better because they got a couple of really fun players to watch, but they're completely outclassed by everyone in their division and the best they can hope for is like an 8 seed. Lu wouldn't change a lot there.
Florida is quite a ways from being a real threat. That was a fluke last year. Plus, Markstrom could be very good and why delay him for so long?

Chicago and NJ are the only teams out of those mentioned that that are legitimately very good teams that could use a goalie. Even then it's debatable.
Crawford is ok but the rest of the team is so solid that it really doesn't matter much. They're gunning for that Wings approach of be good everywhere else and you don't need a stud goalie.
NJ only needs Lu when Marty retires. That could happen next year. It could also happen in 2-3 years becuase he's got all that extra energy in reserve around his fat gut. They won't force marty out for Lu.

Dude I already wrote you off when we spoke about Toronto's Blue line. Last night sure we outshot Washington 2-1 but a lot of those shots were perimeter and anytime Washington broke our zone they looked dangerous because a lot of those shots were getting to the net and there were plenty of rebounds to be had. This team has more than enough capable D guys. It comes down to the forwards giving them proper support and the team not getting down on themselves when they miss an assignment and stop skating. So far, we've maintained good control of puck possession and using our speed to get calls going our way. I'd like to see the boys work more on the forecheck instead of taking stupid perimeter shots. I was pleased with what Randy said last night as well because it's everything I've been preaching on their PP unit. They bobble the puck way too much and take too much time. They have to get it right off the stick astat. In time I'm sure the team's D will get the respect they deserve as long as they keep their head's in the game. Carlyle is still playing Phaneuf and Kostka a ridiculous amount as well. Phaneuf has the 2nd most-ice time in the league at the moment which is frigging nuts. He has little to no control over his slapshot and he always aims it way too high. I think he should be scaled back to Kostka's playtime and shit I almost freaked out when I believe it was Ward or Wolski got behind our d and Kostka stopped the puck right before it got to him on the blue crease. The Leaf Blue line is fine. Our shot blocking could use some work and I still want Reimer to cut down on the rebounds.

You are pretty much the only person I have seen anywhere on the internet saying that their blueline is good. Stats disagree with you, Leafs homers disagree and pretty much anyone else does as well.

Because paying your backup 3.75m is a lot of money?

I already addressed that when I mentioned the extension but they have always managed to co-exist together and it's a good work environment. Roberto is going nowhere fast and the biggest reason is the contract length.

As for you Hawk. Nah, man. Many people have called out the forwards for not giving the D the proper support when breaking out of the zone. You can hardly blame their problems on their core. Don't dwell on the past. It's completely different pairings and it's a new system where everyone will be held responsible. There's certainly a lot of people on Phaneuf's case now though and I've always had a bone to pick with him when it comes to several things he does and doesn't do on the ice.

As for tonight we saw Liles go behind the net with Holzer. They both thought it was icing, but it got called off and what do you know it ends up in the back of the net. The boys are still terrible at handling the puck and getting good movement in the offensive zone on the PP.

As for the ref calls tonight. Wow that certainly spiraled out of control fast in the 2nd. I get that they're trying to protect the goalies but I think it's a little too much. We're not just talking about tonight. We're talking about Ottawa versus Montreal, Edmonton versus L.A., Toronto versus Boston etc. I think it's a bit much. Someone bumps you and the goalies at the edge of the crease how are you supposed to avoid them? You give them a snow job it's an automatic penalty. Let alone the fact they're blowing the whistle way too early when the goalies don't even have the puck. I think it's a little too much.

And refereeing has been universally awful to start the season - but it's kind of the point. Any time there are rule changes or adjustments, the referees tend to overcompensate or have a hard time being consistent. But, typically, most of the growing pains (for both players and officials) are masked by the preseason. With the shortened season this year, it puts all failures under a larger microscope. I think we just have to be patient and it'll improve. At least, it usually does.

As a side note, here's a funny thing about Phaneuf. He was so overrated for so long that people really abandoned his band-wagon en masse. And meanwhile, he actually got a little bit better at hockey and now he exists in this strange place where he is actually a bit under-rated. At least by everyone outside of Toronto given that Leafs fans think every one on the roster is Frank Mahovlich. I hate to admit it, but Frankeneuf isn't absolutely terrible.

edit: wordz.

Well he certainly isn't absolutely terrible but there are a lot of things he can do to improve his game and I mean a lot of things. We've always had a good idea of a lot of his tendencies before but now with Carlyle overplaying practically every other minute his flaws are highlighted more. I don't like it when players get too comfortable with what they do out on the ice and this applies to every player. There are a lot of players who could use some tweaking.

His offense is still way down from his peak years. I totally forgot he hit 20 and was viewed as one of the next big things as far as offensive defensemen. Might be a minorly overpaid based on his recent production but he's definitely still one of the better defensemen in the league. He's definitely not a Jack Johnson type where he's pure offense and fucking horrible in his own end, that's for sure.

speaking of the Leafs, lol

(the team was surprised to learn that four in the corner doesn't protect Staal our front)

First Rangers-Devils tonight! Wooooooo. Rangers gonna give a look to JT Miller. Could end up being a pretty good 2 way forward if he pans out, something kind of like what Dubinsky was. RIP Dubi

That's quality Toronto defense right thar.

edit: In other news, with Horcoff and Belanger both injured (Belanger may return soon), that leaves the average age of centres on the Oilers at about 12 years old. For realz. The 'prospect' they just recalled from OKC is currently the oldest centre on the team. Kickin' it.

Seeing the 1-0 score up there made me curious how things turned out on that play. I suppose this gives some hint:

I don't know if there's a picture of it floating around anywhere, but Phaneuf's positioning on E. Staal's goal was pretty funny too. He was farther up than the forward was, right in the slot, which gave Staal all the room in the world to bank it in off Kostka's (who had a terrible game too) skate. Don't know wtf was going on there.

And good luck tonight, Hawk, let's hope for a good game.
Let's go Devils!

That was what I was commenting on. Look specifically at number 55. Tonight he gave too much space and time on the PK (another trivial call and momentum changer again, thanks refs!) as well and it ended in the back of our net as well. When the team collapses it collapses. Anyway, like I said there are a lot of things Phaneuf can do to improve his game especially when it comes to his offense. Especially tonight. He had plenty of opportunities but his timing is off. It takes only one second for the goalie to square up to you let alone the D. He takes way too much time to setup the big shot and if he got it off sooner especially on the last PP we had it could have gone somewhere. His shot is still wild as hell but at least it would have done something. Anyway, Carlyle really has to scale his ice time back. Just looked at the final stats and he was back at 28 minutes? What the fuck. Then again he is always trying to match Phaneuf and Kostka with the other team's top line and Ovie played a ton in the 3rd.

Grabs last move of the day was exactly what I would like to see of Kessel. He used the boards and retreived the puck to get it to you know who. Mr. 81 himself. Who knows Kessel, maybe you could learn a thing or two from Grabs. -.-
