The drama was entertaining for a while, in an emotionally charged way. But after seeing so many e-battles between self-righteous white-knights, it grew stale and exhausting. I stopped following starcraft news a few months back, due to a few issues. I arbitrarily decided to stop by r/starcraft today and saw a blog talking about the stephano issue. Then, after going through a few pages on this thread, I remembered how much I hated this drama shit. I miss the days of starcraft, where this publicity-sponsor-drama didn't exist. Where the scene was about the games and the players, and not about the sponsors. The bigger starcraft gets, the harder it is going to be for it to maintain what made it so entertaining in the first place: the openness the players shared with their audience. The more money in the scene, the more sponsors involved, the more players will have to watch and monitor every little word they say. Lol you just made my day with "retard-fests".

I'd just really like to see Stephano play 100% Starcraft at some point while he is with EG... but I'm beginning to think that is not going to happen. Fuck all this shit and just play ffs. I really get the impression the Stephano we see winning tournaments is 80% of potential. Maybe someday.

Also, the people who are throwing the term white knight around need to get over themselves, you're not in kidergarten anymore where you can just throw mean words at each other when it does not apply. People being upset over certain gamers and personalities doing/saying things is not them trying to score brownie points by seeming politically correct; if anything, many knowingly criticise knowing that they would seem like a spoilsport. Let's face it, Stephano is a great player in the foreign scene and nobody really wants to root against someone like that, but when they do stupid shit, they need to be called out for it. It's not even like people want him completely destroyed and to disappear from the public scene, just a little maturity, an apology, and some sort of punishment to acknowledge the fact that what he said was "not okay". To be honest, this punishment was probably exactly that, just an acknowledgement that it wasn't okay, and it won't happen again. I'm not an extremist. People make mistakes, fine, get over it. EG handled it fine, and provided that Stephano learns (over time) that this behaviour is unacceptable and incredibly embarrassing for himself, everything will be fine. So unless you sincerely think people are being politically correct to seem cool, and are willing to seriously argue for such a position, stop mindlessly accusing people of being "white knights". People speaking out about behaviour that they find embarrassing, disgusting, or rude, is not "white knighting". It's called speaking one's mind. People who over every one of these issues start crying about how political correctness is killing e-sports has no clue. The historical immaturity of the gamer-base has always made e-sports look bad, and this is a move towards us showing a mature and civilized side.

I think it's clear Stephano is just young and immature, as many gamers this age is, with regards to not saying stupid shit, but what he did is clearly very bad form, and he got away pretty light here. I can't imagine what world you live in if you think this is an overreaction. I'm guessing you probably think rape jokes and racist jokes are all good fun and does no harm. The historical immaturity of the gamer-base has always made e-sports look bad, and this is a move towards us showing a mature and civilized side. Sorry if I did not meet the literal interpretation of "white-knight", because I think you're referring to me. I was not going about any definition I had hear before, but more the image I had in my mind. The image of someone who puts on bright shining armor to crusade for a "noble" cause. In this case, the cause of legitimizing esports by giving it a "mature and civilized tone." The armor, in the way I see it, would be a metaphor for covering up ones own flaws and acting perfect in order to condemn others from a higher standpoint. That's what I see when I see this drama. A bunch of internet knights fighting over a video game, trying to make it into something they think it should be, while in the process just hurting and polarizing the community. All this dumb drama, and clamoring for a greater morality, just distracts from the game itself. The game is fun. The icons in the community are entertaining. That's all you need. Instead, people have this vision of taking esports big, and pushing out what they think is bad in order to meet the standards they think the game will need to go big. Its just a waste of time, and a waste of attention. And hear I am, wasting my time and attention on this when I really should be doing something else. I guess I'm going off on a tangent rant from this stephano thing. Really, I'm not trying to defend stephano's actions specifically. Its more just me venting my frustration's at this silly PC-monitoring force, that has caused multiple controversies in the past. Coming back and checking out the starcraft news, after a couple months away, has only made me more irate because I had kind of hoped the community would have moved on by now. But no, we're still stuck debating this shit. It's one of the reasons I lost interest in the starcraft scene, and I only believe more of the base will leave with time if it keeps up. And it doesn't help to get new peripheral members, if your base is shrinking. So... have I goaded a second post out of you? ;p

IdrA had so many fans, and some people forced him to stop showing his personality - they have no idea how many people stopped following IdrA because he's not as fun to watch anymore. [you don't like his personality? for every one of you there are 3 others who found it funny and kept them interested in this game]. Same with Destiny. Ignoring what people have to say against him, just remember that he was one of the top personalities in the scene (so many stream viewers). Some people started doing stupid shit trying to stop him from being himself - a lot of people will lose interest if he'll listen. Now Stephano is the target of all hatred. If people keep hitting the most viewed personalities, it's very logical that their viewers (who were, btw, quite a majority) will lose interest. Start being a bit more open-minded to everybody's personality - not everybody has the same ideas as you... and if they start being suppressed - their viewers will be suppressed as well." I personally don't care for Idra or Destiny at all, nor do I agree with Stephano's private comments, but this drama is truly pathetic. 140 pages+ now while there's 2 per day for NASL, or 4 in the MLG MvP thread. A joke.

If people keep hitting the most viewed personalities, it's very logical that their viewers (who were, btw, quite a majority) will lose interest. I don't see how asking someone to be more mature by not gratuitously using racial slurs and making racist or sexist jokes publicly is keeping them from being themselves, or how it means said person has no "personality." People can have personality without resorting to base, crass words and comments. I'm not a big fan of Destiny either, but just today I saw a YT snippet from his stream the other night where he was trolling his housemates about some orbital jump sponsored by Red Bull. It was clever, hilarious, and fun. And, as much as it pains me to say this, it really demonstrated good humor and a quality personality on the part of Destiny. You don't need to hop in your douche canoe in order to be entertaining, or to have personality. And I don't think it's too much to ask for professionals in the scene to not act like children. And regarding Stephano: I'm glad EG stepped up (again) to demonstrate that this is not okay. Sure, it was likely pushed upon them by sponsors, and I wish they had been up-front about it, rather than basically being forced to announce it after TLO and a tournament leaked the suspension on their twitter accounts. But they still followed-through. It would just be nice in the future if people would contact a team's management first, rather than the team's sponsors. Yeah, that adds an extra "angry e-mail" they'd have to write, and if nothing gets done by going to management they might not be motivated enough to write another one to a sponsor days later. But if we're asking our pros to act professionally, I don't think it's too much for our community to act responsibly, either.

A joke. When you say personality, you're actually using it as an euphemism: -IdrA - uncontrollable rage that's dime-a-dozen at the local pub -Destiny - racism -Stephano - pedophilia (ephebophilia for all the nerds) If these are the best examples of "personality" you can find and you are actually blaming the community for causing them to stop showing their "personality", I say good riddance. They're personal flaws or pathologies, if you will. If you can't find yourself being interested in SC2 for reasons other than your interest at their pathological behaviour, you should do some personal introspection. I'm all for players/casters showing personality, just not the stuff you took as your examples. edit: Like Wren 822 said, Destiny is still entertaining when he's not being racist. I really don't see how you can blame the community as if it's in the wrong here.

This is a cunning act of self-marketing. QFT I really like stephano (I was watching his stream since he was crashing the EU ladder) but lets be honest here.. He aint Code S material yet and I dont know if he will ever be. Getting to Code S requires skill, some luck, dedication and hard work. He certainly has the skill but we all know he aint exactly the hardest of workers.. Even if he ever makes it to Code S with a free spot or something I believe that there is less than 5% chance he will ever be a champion. Besides, he is mainly interested in making money and he has proven already that he does not need to be the best in order to make a lot of $$. If you watch his stream now at the Korean ladder you will see that he is "nothing special" there. Lots and lots of losses and thats not even against a top GSL player in a BO3 format which admittedly requires a somewhat different skillset. Protech said in his stream that he is gonna be the "new Destiny". I dont know about that but if I had to guess becoming the new "Idra" is more likely. A good player with a great potential but lacking in many aspects (psychological strenght/motivation/arrogance) to ever trully be the best. I hope I am wrong though :/

If Stephano, for joking, said: "Oh man,i held up a bank" with a big smile, did you really think he have problem with hold-up? A joke on a crime is not a crime, and if you do a joke on pedophilia you are not a pedophile (that's difficult to understand?)

Stephano should grow up, and learn a lesson form this. His life is exposed, that comes with the territory; he's famous, a public figure. Topics like this are volatile; many sponsors would refrain from even working with him from now on; simply for that joke. People need to understand the sponsor business and how seriously they view their reputation; which is intervened with their players. Grow the fuck up Stephano, you're smarter than this!
