Before we go any further, let me mention that Banker Girl lived on the 30th floor of this apartment complex called Central Park Towers. Remember this number, because it becomes important near the end of that summer.
Anyhow, she leaned over and asked me if she was still uncultured. The alcohol had turned my sketch-radar way down, so I laughed a little, said she never was uncultured--I was just trying to get her to study harder.
Like I said, my big mouth gets me into trouble.
She immediately giggled like schoolgirl, then stood up and poured the rest of the wine bottle down her throat like a wino from Skid Row. Now was she uncultured, she asked. I stood there and didn't say anything.
She sat down and lit up a cigarette. She took a puff, then immediately apologized for the smoke. I sat down at her piano and asked her if she knew how to play anything. She said no. The keys were dust-free and a book of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes lay atop the piano. I should have figured it out right there, but I didn't.
Somehow we ended up on the couch together watching her collection of--get this--Doraemon. It was getting late and I didn't want to pay the 100RMB cab fare all the way up to Beiyuan, where I lived (and basically house-sat my friend's real estate investment.) I told her I had to go. She looked at me quizzically. I made some noises about the subway stopping at 11PM. She laughed and offered to drive me home. I politely pointed out that she'd just drunk two thirds of a bottle of wine. She laughed, said she had plenty of practice driving like that. I didn't say anything, preferring instead to watch a blue robotic cat dance around her 45 inch plasma.
She disappeared into the bathroom. I heard retching noises, then silence for ten straight minutes. A little curious, I knocked on the door. No answer. I asked if she needed a glass of water. She opened the door; she'd been crying again.
I asked her what was wrong. So she spilled the beans on her predicament.
Apparently she had a boyfriend, surprise surprise. But her boyfriend didn't love her (or so she claimed), instead preferring to spend his time sleeping around with college students. Who was this jerk, I asked, and she said he was a high-ranking exec with a Chinese PE firm.
Then she started talking about how she should have never left that local guy back home. What local guy, I asked. Apparently she grew up in Shanghai and worked in marketing for some Western multinat before Columbia. She dated this local Shanghai boy who was sweet but "wouldn't amount to anything", she thought, so she left him the week after he took her to the Maldives with his life savings.
I was beginning to think she was uncultured.
So, she was sad. And she wanted out. By this time, it was way past 11PM and she'd sobered up already, so I decided to hitch a ride back. Right outside my apartment, as I stepped out of her Porsche, she gave a cigarette-scented kiss on the cheek.
I got back and fumbled with my phone for about ten minutes deciding whether I should call Sylvia or not. Then I assumed she was asleep already and went to bed with a clouded conscience.

Yeah Shady you are too beast. Not to mention shamelessly good at dropping hooks and foreshadowing stuff that makes your audience want to continue to read as well. ^^

Can we please get Parts 3,4,5,6 7, and 8 soon? I really don't like cliff hangers. =[

I've lived in Beijing for the past 9 years or so and it's nice to see place names like Guomao and Hu Jia Lou (both from Part 1) show up on a TL blog haha.
I live in Haidian District, just north of the National Library.

I live in Haidian District, just north of the National Library. Somehow from your name I expect you to turn up in this story. Would be such a plot twist on two levels.

And now we have the classy, ruthless femme fatale archetype with a soft spot for foreign-raised men!
This is easily television material.
