Alex is verbose, and you owe it to yourself (and the rest of us) to read the statement in its entirety. Remember, when making comments/claims to provide proper evidence, facts etc. Arguments based on incorrect assumptions, facts and straw men, will be dealt with swiftly. If in doubt, PM a mod or ask IRC. Do NOT spread misinformation, when in doubt, check your sources. In short, be smart. Sure, orb made a mistake and he should've just apologized even if he didn't say this; that would've ended this controversy way long ago. You can use the n-word without being racist, and you can use "faggot" without being homophobic. It's all how you interpret it, and if it's not meant to offend homosexual people or black people then it isn't. You shouldn't assume such things. Show nested quote +For the record, I do want to point out that I don't think Orb is "a racist." As mentioned above, I think that to make such a claim would be to misunderstand the nature of contemporary racism. This, of course, does not lessen the severity of his actions, or the extent to which they are unacceptable and inexcusable, but it's still an important distinction to make. I don't even understand what you're trying to say here. You release him, not because he's a racist, but because of his actions? People are making this blown way out of proportion and I don't feel orb should have this type of punishment. Maybe have him apologize and put him on a week break, but absolutely releasing him for saying a word that may offend somebody. Because god forbid we offend someone. It's not even like it was under your supervision or on the EG Master Cup, it was on his own stream where he can say what he wants. It's his content.
Well when your sponsors, the people who pay your bills, say that they don't want to be associated with someone who uses that language, its a problem.
Regardless if your are offended or not, the N-word is bad for business.

This truly became an issue because Orb was calling other White players "nigger".
|
I hope that Reddit's next witch hunt is about people using 'rape'- that, to me, is equally offensive/non-offensive as nigger. That way we could get Tastosis fired as well.

Reddit didn't make orb say or do the things he did, they just brought it to light.

This is a bad decision, idra and huk have skeltons in their closet yet orb an amaaazzzing caster is given the boot much much too drastic.

I agree with Alex and he has gained even more respect from me than I thought possible. As EG values are in line with mine I am now an EG supporter as evidenced below.

It's kind of like if I stole a toy from a grocery store when I was 8. Later in life I work there, and somehow someone finds out that a decade ago I stole a 99cent toy, and I was fired. Sounds ridiculous right? I did not realize Orb was eight when this all happened.
You obviously have the mental capacity of an 8 year old if you don't know what a metaphor is.

I don't think Orb meant any harm, but the precedent has to be set. I hope he continues his casting work, as he's one of my favorite casters, but I feel a "no tolerance for assholes policy" is a reasonable response from EG.

Thank you very much for this post and your continued work in the community. EG really is a great organization and exactly what we need in this community if it is going to succeed. This is yet another example of how much you all care about E-sports and your fans. Thank you for this.
On a side note: Could someone PM me with the contact information for EG's sponsors? I would love to send them my feedback on this awesome company!

Fantastically handled, in my opinion. Alex wins brownie points for me.

Are you kidding? Reddit over reacted, but the way Orb chose to handle this was childish and moronic.

Let this be a warning guys, be on your bestest behavior when playing ladder games or the internet will destroy your reputation. People really have no idea how often opportunities are missed and doors closed without them knowing. Because not only does the internet operate in funny ways, so do people in the real world. It's always best to be your best at all times. Those of us who sometimes allow ourselves to act worse do it at our own risk. The difference in attitude here is what often sets apart people who hit a plateau in life and people who miraculously, seemingly luckily, succeed.
your friends call people faggots a lot
would you support them getting kicked from eg too

lol just check his Brood War TSL replay pack. The game against JulyZerg instead of saying "gg" he said "fag" and instantly left the game when he saw July did a 1 hatch lurker build.

Only your ignorance makes you proud to be a Starcraft Community member today, Alex. Most, and perhaps nearly all, of the complaints you received were from pitiful people who want to create some entertainment at Orb's expense. A few others were probably from those slugs who masturbate in self-righteousness and take every opportunity to speak out about a cause because it gets them off. Finally, one or two were likely sincere.
You're probably proud of your post. You think it makes you sound smart and enlightened (though you'd rather die than admit it). Yeesh it doesn't. all due respect, I'm sneering.

If we, as a community, are going to hold Orb accountable for his language during a ladder game we need to hold everybody who uses offensive language equally accountable. Where is the outrage over IdrA, Destiny, Lalush, etc? These are players (maybe not lalush) that are famous for their bm and cursing. I vehemently disagree with the use of the n-word for the reasons Mr. Garfield outlined, however I also hate applying double standards. Orb seems like the victim of a tempest in a teacup.

The fact that there are people rejoicing over a possible career ending move, says a lot about the community. This is the at least the second time SteelSeries has been "attacked" for doing absolutely nothing wrong. If you're wondering the first time, it was when they made the hard decision to not renew their sponsorship with Grubby. At what point do sponsors switch to another game, where people are just happy that their is a community.
|
This is ridiculous and out of hand.
Nice wall of text, you make valid points however making an example out of this poor up and coming caster is simply something I can't approve of.

"...Now, I just wish you guys would also get this upset when people use the word f----t, so that we could start fighting homophobia, too, and show people that it, like racism, also doesn't belong in our community"
Guess you can start with your team for the part if you really believe in that stance.

It just shows that the taboo the word has in the world, most especially American society, is so extreme even saying it in a completely different, racially-empty context is considered the greatest transgression.
America, get over your guilt complex. This is bad logic. "Nigger" has huge societal implications and is a unique word and that warrants unique treatment. Alex (ottersareneat? Mr. Garfield? idk) made a good argument for why it carries so much weight, you just sort of ignored this.
It's not a unique word; there are plenty of foul curses in the English language. This one is just singled out as being "super taboo." The OP's argument is unfortunately just apologetic racial guilt. No offense, but people need to really get over it. As a non-American it's apparent to me how much Americans are obsessed with it.

By this logic shouldn't EG fire Idra? He calls people faggots all the time. And he does it while representing EG officially. Is discrimination against blacks somehow worse than against homosexuals? Or is Idra just more valuable to EG than Orb?
