I'm not even sure what they are called altogether, but I need a new portable media player. My Cowon s9 that I loved so much finally broke today, and it looks like I can't fix it.
I'll be leaving Korea in two days so I want to buy something here since it'll most likely be cheaper. I was thinking of maybe replacing s9 in the summer but didn't think it'd break now so I have no idea what is considered good (not that I was an expert when I bought s9, but I did some research).
I'll be most likely be listening to music, with a good pair of earphones. I do rarely watch videos and read text files, but it is not a strict requirement. I really loved s9 as it catered to every needs except not connecting to the web, and only 16GB of memory (solely my fault).
Maybe I should buy an s9 again? It looks like the 32gb is no longer manufactured... a bit sad. I was planning to just 'stay safe'.
Your thoughts and recommendations, and perhaps point me to a good set of review? My price range will be anything below $350 but I would rather not spend all of it.
tl;dr:
Old mp3 broke, need new one. Requirements: Sufficient storage 20gb+ at least Good sound quality (hardware and software I guess?, don't know much in this field) not ipod because I probably still need itunes for it, maybe not. Would still like to stay away from it. Under $350
Preferences Video-playing and text-viewing Touchscreen, it was nice Easy to manage Basically something close to s9 as possible
Maybe I should just return to US cause it looks like s9 32gb is available there on ebay. Or just buy another 16gb model here in Korea.

Im recomending iPhone or iPod. maybe it feels too mainstream and what not but in all fair they are great. I don't know what the price would be for an iPod, I only own an iPhone 3 myself. Other than that I heard that Zune makes good portable media players

I would get a smartphone like the galaxys2. Support Stork!

nothing beats an ipod as a media player nowadays. plus they are nicely priced for all the benefits that you get i.e. wifi, gaming etc.
but if you just want a media player for music and video playback and are bit of an audiophile, then i suggest you look at something like the Cowon J3 or maybe the S9. the sound quality of these devices are awesome and if you have a decent pair of earphones or an amp to boot, then your'e pretty much set.

If you just resent I-tunes and not the I-pod itself then you can use Winamp to transfer songs to your ipod. The sound quality of a ipod and it's comfort in use make it the best portable music player imo. Just don't use the standard headphones ^^
Phone/music player combinations (be it smartphones or w.e.) tend to have horrible sound quality so I wouldn't go in that direction.

iPod sound quality wha...?
To the OP, if you don't want an iPod, I remember looking at the aptly-named http://anythingbutipod.com a few years back -- haven't been looking recently so I'm not sure how relevant the site is nowadays. Personally, I just use my smartphone as an mp3 player -- if you're going to have to carry around something of that size just for music, might as well have it be a phone as well. If I were to get a dedicated music player I'd stick with something really portable like the iPod nano/watch combo or Sansa Clip.

I use a Galaxy 2 for all my music needs. It's pretty good, just make sure you get an android with 4.0

You might wanna look at what Archos does, they have good products for what you are looking

Anything with android on it; these days any mobile device (tablet, phone, mp3 player) is gonna be iOS(Apple) or android, or generic. Problem with generic is that you lose access to the app stores - your mp3 player should basically be able to do most things smartphones can do (except for phone stuff of course).
Samsung Galaxy player is probably a good buy.

Well couldn't find S9. I want to buy in Korea so I'm now considering between J3 and D3.
EDIT: looks like I don't need a D3. Now to find the cheapest J3...
