Any tips for playing Mummies? The whole "no hunger clock" concept is really cool, but I'm having a real hard time getting one going. Seems like I'm always dying on the first 4 floors to either uniques or just tough normal monsters like ogres and centaurs.

You probably know, but play as caster because that's the strength of mummies. I'd pick wizard as class because you get great survival spells. Mephitic cloud should completely disable most uniques, ogres and centaurs. In a pinch use summon imp in hallways to give you space to run away. Basically don't let tough monsters get a chance to hit you at all, bombard from a distance. Use an up staircase and go down a different down staircase if monsters in one area are too much to handle. Also you don't need to kill everything, feel free to skip a floor if it's too hard.

Mummies are really finnicky in the early game. I my experience the best option with them is to play some kind of spellcaster with Mephitic Cloud in the starting spellbook (Wizard is great, Magic Dart can kill everything early eventually and blink is great escape) Play very slowly and carefully. If there is nothing around you don't even move until at full HP/MP. Once you get to the temple worship Sif Muna and then explore the wonderful realm of broken that is Channel Energy with no food clock. You'll be set up great to branch into whatever kind of spellcaster you like. You may still die a few times trying to get to level 3, but playing carefully with meph and fleeing at the first sign of danger can keep you alive at that point. It's also worth noting that if you wait long enough (a few hundred turns, hit the wait key 3-5 times) there is a good chance that the monsters at the bottom of the stairs will have drifted off a little bit, so don't be afraid to go down stairs, blow all your mana on your biggest spells and then flee upstairs to recuperate. Good luck!

Just say no to mummies. If you really hate the food clock on casters/zerkers, kobolds are your best option.
|
I have to disagree with you defenestrate, Mummies can abuse Sif's Channel Energy like no other and undead resistances can come in handy quite often. Kobolds have a harder time carpeting the entire level in poison clouds and they can't really afford to spam Orb of Destruction at everything in sight like Mummies can. The complete lack of a food clock can be abused in amazing ways that even kobold food flexibility can't match, especially if you are playing a version without Hive (0.10)

Rofl, just has a great run going with a Mummy Wizard, but died to a troll. I couldn't find Lair to save my life. Orcs was on like D:4.
I was down at D:11 when I came across a dragon. Instead of fighting it I just ran away. I just held down the move button and walked into a troll, dying before I took my finger off the key. rofl rofl rofl.
This game is so damn unforgiving.

lol, died to my old HOPr ghost as a level 12 SpEn. Very maddeningly, I couldn't find a Kiku altar so I had to take Makhleb (and did so pretty late...) I suspect I depend too much on spamming Confuse as SpEn -_-;; and if/when it doesn't work, I'm like "wait oops this dude is in my face T_T"

This game is so damn unforgiving. If you mean an actual dragon like the fire-breathing kind, it could probably one-hit-kill you with your fire weakness, and it was probably a shapeshifter since that's drastically out-of-depth. If you mean Mottled Dragon, it could still quite likely kill you with its sticky flame breath. So running away was most likely the right move.

I suspect I depend too much on spamming Confuse as SpEn -_-;; and if/when it doesn't work, I'm like "wait oops this dude is in my face T_T" Nemelex is another good option. A legendary deck of summoning (you can get stuff like Bone Dragons, Executioners, a horde of red wasps, etc., as well as legendary Crusade having a chance to permanently convert any enemy in LOS to an ally ... great fun with the V:8 welcome party!) can solo anything in the game no problem, and you can't eat corpses anyway so just sacrifice them all to Nemelex to bias his gifts toward summoning. They're also zero-risk to pull from unless you get a power 0 effect (see the knowledge bots for more on that ... basically it means that plain decks have ~25% chance to give you something hostile, ornate will occasionally do so, and legendary almost never). Also lets you use any rods/wands you find more effectively since Nemelex works off of Evocations skill.
Other decks aren't bad but are generally less powerful and more risky. But honestly a legendary deck of summoning is pretty close in power to Makhleb's Greater Servant ability, except less risky, doesn't cost piety, and you can get it earlier.
Then you can stab at will, and if something that you can't kill by yourself wakes up you just call in some help.
Yred works ok as well but is probably worse than Kiku.
On a related note, I have two Death Cobs, a Profane Servitor, a spectral Orc Sorceror, and a ghoul following my MiDK around right now and I have only just found the Vaults and just cleared Orc. I probably would have a third Death Cob but I read-ID'd a scroll of holy word about two turns after Yred gave it to me, lol. (Amulet of Faith is really powerful for gods with good gifts, like Yred or Nemelex.)
Needless to say, I'm kind of wiping the floor with everything since any one of those enemies tends to be able to solo any single enemy I run into, and I'm no slouch myself. Unfortunately I misplayed Orc:4 pretty badly by using Drain Life as soon as I saw the orc priest vault. Had I been more patient I could have a handful of spectral orc priests on my side as well, which would be truly ridiculous.

D1: You see an Ice Dragon Armor "cool!" D2: You see an Ice Beast "nice!" D3: Centaur shoots an Arrow of Flaming at you. You Die. "fml"

hahahaha that sucks... but at least the game didn't string you along for too long before killing you
@crate: hmm, I'll try. I've never really used Nemelex before, but sounds good :o

The game is awesome, I've been playing it on and off for few months. My best result was Dying to Zot:3 with the orb. I think I'm close to 1000 games so I should join the club of terribads :p

While I'm here, can someone explain backstabbing to me?
|
On December 11 2011 18:51 MrBitter wrote: While I'm here, can someone explain backstabbing to me? If you attack a sleeping monster, you are guaranteed to stab it. If you attack a monster that doesn't know you are around (confused, awake but hasn't seen you, you are invisible but it doesn't see invis and you've moved since you last attacked, etc.) then you might stab it.
A stab gives a damage bonus dependent on your weapon type and stabbing skill, and whether the enemy is asleep. Non-blade weapons are terrible, don't even bother. Long blades are ok but still not worthwhile; quick blades, short blades, and sabers are decent. Daggers get a huge damage bonus, up to the point where a good damage roll can one-hit-kill stuff like Xtahua, Orbs of Fire, and Ancient Liches. You get a bigger bonus for stabbing against a sleeping monster.
If you want numbers you can check the knowledge bots. Don't train stabbing excessively ... if you're one-hit-killing stuff then you can turn it off since you don't need more damage and would be better served training skills that instead either make it easier to stab or make you better off when you can't or fail to stab.

Beef42, where do you go to download .10? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Also, is there a tiles version out for it? Thanks =)
There are binaries of the trunk release here. Note that they're updated very frequently, so playing on the servers is easier since you won't have to download a new build every day. There's also tiles if you're into that.

Reason I ask:
I'm playing a HOPr.
Level 2 I found an artifact dagger with +Dex +Stealth and +3Damage.
I'm thinking about just going all stabby with my priest, but does it work with followers?
|
Nope. The orcs will shout and wake up monsters. You'd need meph or invis or something.
edit, Actually on second thought, when an enemy hits a player-aligned minion, doesn't it become "distracted" or something, making stabs possible? I really never play summoners so I actually don't know.
|
You can get some stabs in with followers, but as a HO I wouldn't bother. You have -2 stabbing aptitude, -2 stealth apt, -2 dodging with +1 armour (so you probably will be in heavy armour, which I'm pretty sure is less stealthy), and 0 short blade compared to +1 or better in several other weapon categories. Use the dagger early on if you want but it's still a dagger (not even with a brand) and that means it's still going to be a bad weapon later on.

Ok so I'm really not sure how you can actually lose in a 3-rune game with Yred as a melee character if you get an amulet of faith and get a gift or two to get rolling, unless you get horrendously unlucky with a shaft trap or something. Yred's gifts are batshit crazy, and with an amulet of faith you get enough of them to pretty much just go win without having to kill anything yourself.
I just finished my game up, and I'm pretty sure that the 3 Profane Servitors and 4 Bone Dragons plus other not-so-amazing undead I had following me into Zot, coupled with Drain Life, would've been enough to clear out everything but Zot:5, and it might've worked there too. Add in me as a Minotaur with some good damage output and, well, I had some Dragons and Servitors left over after I killed all the dudes.
My entourage was able to take out an Ancient Lich that summoned a pair of 1's when I ran into it in the Crypt. I just read a teleport scroll, let it kick in, and then rested up as I got free experience. This was typical of how I dealt with bad situations.
I had one really nasty moment when I fell through a shaft on D:26 into the middle of a big vault (like half the map) in D:27 ... it had a bunch of unpleasant things that I did not think I could deal with, so I teleported ... right into another, even worse portion of the vault! I had yaktaurs and dragons firing at me and an Ancient Lich being quite unfriendly too ... Drain Life healing for more per-turn than a potion of heal wounds when there's a big group of living stuff on-screen saved my butt for sure.
But other than that one freak accident moment there was no danger at all on this run after the beginning (where I had some close calls from sloppy play and not having an army around). Yred's gifts pretty much solo'd Snake for me, Vault: 8 was a cakewalk because Drain Life killed the entire welcome party and then I turned them into zombies, I had some fun with enslave soul too. I even plain forgot I had pain mirror for the second half of the game (whoops, could've used that some in Zot since I didn't have any other need for piety!) and stomped face.
I also forgot to go clear Elf, but it's not like I needed anything from there anyway.
Here is the morgue if you want to read it ... there are a lot of gifts from Yred--77 in all.

Bitter you're going to have to get used to seeing awesome artifact weapons/armor that you just shouldn't use with a certain character. A little part of you will die, but your character may live on.
