Thanks for the help Don't waste time and you should have no food problems. If you haven't yet found any food and you're a Spriggan maybe don't cast spells that have a food cost. Or play a different race. You are guaranteed some shops in Orc:4. Otherwise they're purely random. I'm not sure if there's a minimum depth for shops but I've found some on about D:4 before.

D up until lair -> lair 1-8 -> orc 1-4 -> dungeon up until vaults -> snake 1-4 (if you have rpois) -> elf 1-4 if you have decent MR and resists and/or are using cloud spells -> vaults 1-7 -> dungeon until it gets rough (usually around D:20 or so) -> finish up the lair branches (not slime though, you need special equipment for that) -> elf: 5 -> dungeon until it gets rough again, though you should be able to clear all the way down to 27 -> V: 8 (BE VERY CAREFUL DOWN HERE) -> zot 1-5 -> win. Orc: 4 can be very risky so if it gets rough at all, leave it for a bit later. Vaults 1-7 and elf 1-4 are interchangeable depending on your abilites, vaults mostly features physical damage while elf has lots of magic (wear conservation if you like your scrolls). Elf: 5 can be done immediately if you're using poisonous cloud or freezing cloud assuming you're cautious enough(seriously, don't try this if you're unsure you can be patient and tactical enough). At any point if you find some unique that is too tough or a floor simply features enemies that are too tough for you, turn back and return later. Safety is key. Never take a risk if it can be avoided. Note that this branch order was written for trunk. If you're playing a version where Hive still exists, do it somewhere post-orc when you have rpois.

I had cleared about half of Orcs:4, and then I went down some stairs and just insta-died. wtf This game is so fun, but so fucking enfuriating! DE Wizard??? That's a terrible combination for a beginner. DE is an intermediate/advanced race due to their super low survivability. Additionally, their awesome spellcasting abilities don't even matter for a regular 3-rune win -- it only helps for getting the highest level spells going earlier than usual and maintaining them at a lower hunger cost. So, basically, for someone going for their first win, there's literally no reason to use a DEWz. HEWz is much easier. Even a NaWz is easier as long as you understand you need to Blink away from tough enemies and abuse your intrinsic rPois by using Mephitic Cloud, like, all the time. Actually, they made it so everybody starts with 12ish HP recently. So HE is nothing but a shit DE, and NaWz wtf? You know nagas are slow right?

SP Wz. Lucked out a ton with equipment, picking up an awesome spear on D2 with +3 Int, +2 Dex, Invis, Blink, Levitate. I'm being really cautious about Orcs this time, and am thinking about jumping into Lair. I've never actually gotten to Lair before. Any hints for when I get there? Also, have'n some spellbook issues. I took Vehumet, but the bastard won't give me any books, and magic missile is really losing its killing power. Halp!?

Lair is full of beasts--which means no enemies with equipment, very few ranged attacks, and overall a lot of experience with minimal danger. Basically every character wants to do Lair as soon as it appears. It's low-risk and high-reward. Doubly so for spriggans since they're faster than frogs. Orc on the other hand is high-risk and low-reward for the most part, since the popcorn orcs give pathetic experience and the dangerous orcs are, well, dangerous.

Far and away my best run yet. Cleared out the Lair, and went back to Orcs, only to die in, you guessed it, Orcs:4. I was doing fine - Amulet of Guardian Spirit adds a lot of survivability, btw - until blinking into an ogre mage and some of his buddies. I thought I could get away with a blink, but instead of helping me, it put me right in the middle of the pack. Insult to injury: I had a scroll of blink in my inventory, and stairs within site of me when my casted blink fucked me. T.T Live and learn. Have'n a ton of fun with the casters. The game really picks up once you start unlocking the later spell books. I kinda got spell happy last time, and wound up with a lot of useless spells, and no scroll of amnesia to clear space for the new ones I wanted to learn. Next time I'll definitely save room for Orb of Destruction, or whatever its called.

It effectively doubles my HP, meaning when I make a bad decision (which is often) I can still survive long enough to try something else.

Decided to make a Berserker, because I've been playing casters almost exclusively for the past few days. Trog gifted me this really crazy axe. Some cursed demon axe with some absurd bonuses and something like +12/+13 (wtf does that mean, btw?) Sometimes when I would hit enemies, the axe would summon a smoke demon. Fucking awesome. If I ever removed curse, the axe would recurse itself (lol) and whenever I spotted an enemy, I became mesmerized and had to kill it. rofl. Obviously there are drawbacks to something like that when playing Crawl. I got mesmerized by a Yack in the Lair. Normally that's no big deal, but because I couldn't move away, I wasn't able to position myself in a corner or in a hallway like you would normally want to. I got surrounded by all 6 of his yack buddies, and was ceremoniously yacked to pieces. Really, really fun time. I think I will make another Berserker next time I play. Perhaps an Ogre.

+12/+13 on a weapon means that you get +12 to-hit and +d13 damage (or something like that ... I don't know the formula). +damage is more important than +hit. Just so you know, Ogres are the worst race in the game. They have bad aptitudes, limited equipment, and they're big so they get a sizable EV hit. They're much like a Troll without all the beneficial Troll innate mutations. They're mainly a challenge race. If you want an easy race to play as a berserker then Kobold is a good choice. Probably Halfling also, since you get similar aptitudes and the same small size dodging bonus with more HP (but no saprovore). In either of those cases use short blades. If you want to use big weapons (axes or long blades probably) then you could use a Minotaur or Hill Orc, or you can go unarmed and play a Troll.

You could wield a weapon for its ego properties, but Trolls have more aptitude for unarmed (plus they have a few unarmed attacks, even if you have a weapon, that'll get trained anyway.)

So, sure, you don't have a use for weapons. That's fine, because you don't need them and being able to use Trog's abilities is still pretty darn powerful. Not like Trolls have useful spellcasting aptitudes anyway.

I highly suggest you use the knowledge bots for your reference needs. They contain information on all gods, powers, monsters items and so on; and they're actually (mostly) updated.
