Hey TL,
This is a multi-faceted blog since I haven't updated in a while.
MY Big Beast:
First thing's first - I built my new computer! Compared to my old Dell Dimension 5150 this thing is absolutely awesome. I used to run Starcraft on Low settings with about 32 sounds and static unit portraits. Now I can run it on Extreme in window mode and my computer isn't even sweating. Aside from my old peripherals, which still suck but not nearly as much as my computer used to, I'm now completely uninhibited when it comes to gaming. + Show Spoiler [The Build] +Let me know if any pictures don't show up.So the motherboard I ended up getting was an ASUS P8 Z68-V LE. It has all the fixings for a moderate price, around $130. Then I installed the CPU; an Intel i5-2500k, which I got on sale for $215 CAD. Even though I had the notches lined up it felt like I had to use an enormous amount of force to pull down the lever on the force place. There was also this unpleasant metallic crunching noise. At this point since I knew I technically had everything correct I should just leave it alone. Next I installed the heat sink and the RAM. Heat sink is a standard Cooler Master Hyper 212+ for about $40, and the RAM is G-Skill Ripjaws 8GB, also $40. The graphics card. AMD Sapphire Toxic HD 6950 2GB. Cost me $320. At this point I was going to do a startup test but I chickened out and decided it was best to just put it all in the case. The case is my favourite. It's a sexy Corsair Carbide 400R, black. The interior is awesome and I love the exterior look. Every review I found of the case was positive, and for $100 it was perfect. Here's all the stuff mounted inside and ready for a rough startup test. Oh, and the power supply is a Corsair 750W. I forget how much it cost, but it wasn't that expensive. There's also an extra fan directing air out the top. Considering it was 3am that startup test felt amazing. The splash screen meant everything worked perfectly. After re-doing the wiring I put everything back together. I shoved 1.5TB of storage in there that I cannibalized from two old computers, and also a DVD-R/W drive. All tolled the thing cost me $1100 after taxes. I got Windows 7 and Office 2010 for free and put it on, and it runs beautifully. The internet is even faster because I switched from wireless-G to the on-board gigabit Ethernet. I think it's high time I made that step up to Diamond League, and on Boxing Day I'm going to look for a new monitor and peripherals. For now while I'm in school it gets the job done, but Skyrim demands a greater field of view.
Intense Win and Godly Luck!:
So the other thing I wanted to write about is what happened to me yesterday. Considering I've already been pretty lucky this year already, my cascade of small successes has sometimes felt inhuman. Well yesterday it happened yet again.
On Monday I had a huge project worth 30% of my final grade in a class due. I'd been working intensely all weekend to get it done, but I just couldn't finish; there was always more to add. The professor only cared that we handed it in by midnight (or later - who was going to know?) so I continued working on it all day and night until I was semi-satisfied with it. I ended up writing 7000 words in about 48 hours on magnetic confinement nuclear fusion; not an easy task. I slept maybe 3 hours on Sunday night, and by "Sunday night" I mean I went to bed at 12 noon on Monday. Then, when I finally finished the report, I went to bed at 3am Monday night.
Did I mention I had a 25% History exam on Tuesday morning? I had a 25% History exam on Tuesday morning (The Crusades). I hadn't studied; I hadn't slept; I went to bed at 3am, and the exam was at 9:30am.
I woke up at noon. I've never slept through an exam in my life, but by that point my body had been so battered I obviously couldn't rouse it to do anything else. I was very mad at myself, but one thing I'm good at in times of crisis is staying calm. I immediately emailed the professor, showered, and went to school to at least try and recover my day if nothing else.
Not 2 minutes after I got to the school my professor emailed me back and asked me to meet her. She was marking the recently completed exams in the in the cafeteria. We met up and I grabbed a scone (since I also hadn't eaten in 18 hours), then we went to another professor's office and I wrote my exam while she marked the others. I got an 88%.
The professor's reasons for letting me do this is basically because I showed a little enthusiasm and actually did my work throughout the term. It's not about being a suck-up; it's about demonstrating at least a little effort on your part. That way, mistakes can be let go. I'll probably bring up the damn average in the class anyways - these first year History students don't realize just how fun their stuff is (I'm in 4th year Mechanical Engineering). Regardless, I screwed up, and the fact that I was able to recover means I am very, very, very, very lucky.
tl;dr: Be nice, and a good student, and it will not go unnoticed. And history is way awesome.

That's amazing! Congratulations
It's nice when professors give hard workers a break every once in a while. Sometimes shit happens.
Out of curiosity, did you leave your project off til the last minute?

Haha, that totally happened to me first semester of my freshman year. (Missing an exam). But mine was because it was my language class and I didn't fully understand that the date the prof kept repeating over and over for several weeks was for the MAKEUP exam. -.- It was ok though cause she let me take it on the later date. XD

I didn't want to be the first one to say it but that's why I clicked the blog. Your name and your blog title are both one letter away from a completely different blog lol.

No one said I named the computer that, lol. It's actually a reference to Riku's blog about her new computer with the same title. I thought it was about her favorite penis; actually most people thought that. If you want I could write a blog about my penis...

Great set-up bro. Hope you enjoy it.

Keep that attitude in life after school as well, it's amazing what having a good attitude and being friendly to people (even those that can't do anything for you in return) and a little hard work can do for someone.

That can be arranged.

I wholeheartedly agree. A million opportunities can be yours if you're just an all around good person. I don't mean pushover nice either, but good. Hard work is also paramount. Half of my successes in the past 4 months have been a result of me just getting up and walking to see the people I needed to see or going where I needed to go. Half of my marks have come from me killing myself staying up all hours to get stuff done; sleep is for those who are broke. Take a little initiative and it will go a long way in life.

I totally agree with "It's not about being a suck-up; it's about demonstrating at least a little effort on your part."
In my final semester of my undergrad degree I had to do Theory of Computation, which is some higher level problem solving shit. Think N=NP stuff. I still have no idea about how to actually structure those problems. Half through the semester I had an average of just over 10%, I went to my lecturer and basically told him that I thought I was going to fail because the stuff didn't make sense. We organise a weekly catchup where I still learnt bugger all. If the shit makes no sense in class, it makes no sense in an office. Anyway, exam time comes and there is no way I can pass. I don't even complete half the exam paper. I am sitting in the bottom half of a class of geniuses and I know I will be coming back to Uni just to repeat the same subject.
Well I passed with exactly 50%. I am certain to this day that my lecturer was so fucking sick of seeing me that he just passed me on sympathy
Never give up and make an effort. Pretty simple really.

Okay in all seriousness that's fantastic that you managed an 88%. Great job (^_^)b
And you're spot on. Niceness does in fact get you nice things in return. In life, on TL, even with girls.

Okay, your beast is bigger than mine, but mine is a laptop!

Sweet man. 88's are awesome. Can happen to us all.
Woke up for first midterm ever (scheduled for 8:15AM) at 8:11AM. Still made it as tests were being passed out.
I once woke up at 11:15 AM on a day I had a 9AM exam.
I rushed outside and got halfway to the campus before I remembered that I'd already written it and gone home and back to bed.
Was like one of those moments that this meme is appropriate for.

Don't worry Riku your laptop is pretty sweet! Besides, it's not the size of the e-penis that matters.
