The best two RPGs on snes: chrono trigger and seiken densetsu 3, aka secret of mana 2, which was only released in japanese but playable in an emulator with a translation patch. The lead artist for Chrono Trigger was Akira Toriyama, the guy who made Dragonball anime, while I'm not a fan of DB, the art is incredible. Seiken Densetsu 3 has the best gameplay and graphics of any super nintendo game, story not so great, but it featured 6 different playable characters to choose from, each with extensive skill trees and class changes with a choice of 2 options at level 16 and 32 or so. Chrono Trigger. Features one of the best RPG stories ever, the first Squaresoft RPG to use real time combat instead of turn-based, and also the best original soundtrack for the SNES. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first RPG to abandon random encounters, instead beginning battle when your character approached enemies on the adventure map, on which all battles are conducted without transitioning into a combat background, and it was the first game to feature New Game+ mode, where you start the game with the level you reached when you finished it. It used this mode to the fullest extent, the game had something like a dozen different endings, most of which could only be seen by going through New Game+ mode. + Show Spoiler + Seiken Densutsu 3/Secret of Mana 2 + Show Spoiler + Secret of Mana + Show Spoiler + Bahamut Lagoon + Show Spoiler + Ogre Battle + Show Spoiler + Now moving onto PS1, you absolutely need to ASAP add Chrono Cross, the sequel to Chrono Trigger on snes. This is actually hands-down one of the best RPGs ever made (certainly the best ever seen on a console), and I have played them all. It ranks up there with Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment. It has one of the best storylines you will ever find in a game, some of the best graphics made on ps1, and the best game soundtrack ever made. For this game and Chrono Trigger, squaresoft sidelined their usual composer Nobuo Uematsu and used a lesser-known composer Yasunori Mitsuda. I will include in the spoiler a link to the intro song and some others, to this day it sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it, as do most of the songs on the 3disc(!) soundtrack, even the battle music is stellar, never got tired of hearing it once during many battles and playthroughs. It was one of the first games to use entirely live-recorded songs played by actual musicians and orchestras and abandon midis. If you are of the mind that the Final Fantasies represent the best JRPG has to offer, play this game now. The game has hardly aged at all, the blocky 3d character designs are full of personality and style, and the 2d hand-drawn backgrounds are breathtaking. The game also used a unique combat system that has never been repeated in another game, a system that actually made every battle interesting instead of going into 'grind mode'. Ok I'm going to stop myself because I could write pages and pages on this amazing game. O wait, I forgot to mention that the game has 44, FORTY-FOUR, playable characters in the roster, and most amazingly of all: nearly all of them have their own personality, storyline, sidequests, unique equipment, and unique abilities. Not a single character is plain or 1-sided or useless. Also it is impossible to have all characters available during one playthrough, it takes 3 playthroughs with new game+ mode (and that's only if you know the game liek the back of your hand, usually it takes many more). And I haven't even written about half of what this game has to offer. To me, it wasn't a video game, it was an experience, an unforgettable one at that. And I haven't even mentioned anything about the story, because anything I say about it will not do the story justice. It's just that good. + Show Spoiler + JP cover: These are the playable characters. I haven't played this game for many years, but I could still probably name name most of these characters. A shot from an FMV: A collage of different FMVs throughout the game: This is the village you begin the game in: Some more scenery a couple of songs: intro: one of the few songs with vocals:

Lords of Magic is absolutely sick. It is one of my favourite games and is simply an amazing game. 8 fully unique factions with unique racial attributes, unique set of units (a few cross over) which include infantry, cavalry, ranged, scouts, magical and legendary as well as a whole set of unique spells and hero/leader units. Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Life, Death, Chaos and Order. Whenever I go to start a new game I just have spend time thinking about who I want to be and what hero leader to start with (like a HoMM game). Here's some of the sick music to hook you in: The game is actually amazing. In an army you can field up to 9 slots of whatever you choose as well as one hero to lead each three, them being Warrior, Thief or Mage. Thieves can stealth in the overlay map as well as in battle and if you find an enemy leader unit, you can actually stealth up and subdue them and they then become a prisoner - to which you can interrogate, tortue, execute or use to trade. This is one of my favourite games because it just encompasses so many cool things. All units grow in level where champions max out at level 10-15 and normal troops go up to level 6 I think. You can leave leader units in the three buildings which you recruit from and they add experience per turn to it, so a high level warrior will allow for high level warriors and melee units to come out at higher levels right off the bat. You can upgrade each building to allow for faster experience gains and when you upgrade the mage tower it also upgrades the little building beside it which is a library. In order to learn new spells, a mage can occupy a library and choose to study from one of four tomes of spells. Higher levels learn faster and upgrading the mage tower allows for more mages to learn at once, which again makes it faster. Leader units can also wield a huge variety of artifacts. Two slots per hero. Pretty much for whole fucking game is awesome and has some of the best quotes. You can fully parley and negotiate with the other races, trade everything from resources to units and spells and form alliances. Turn based map mode with real time combat which you can pause at any time. Find a full free legal download of the game in the download section at http://mantera.xorgate.com/website.html as well as to download the GS5 mod, updated two days ago. This game is 14 years old but you know if people are still playing it and modding it then it is fucking good.

Upon researching it, the one that came to the US was actually the second game, but they never released the first one in the west. It was also the lead-in project for the company that went on to make Gran Turismo, which is evidenced by beating this game on the hardest difficulty, thus unlocking a stage where you use a stock car or indy car. Not just this game, but the whole series. It's an action/shooter game: Sample of arena play in Armored Core 3: Silent Line (my favorite iterations are Armored Core 3 and Armored Core: Silent Line) I think the fifth one is coming out for PS3 and 360 fairly soon. By fifth I mean Armored Core 5, even though there are 13 games on official platforms and a couple for phones in Japan. The stories are all fairly immersive and there is an overall timeline, the missions can take anywhere from 2 minutes to 40 minutes. omg armored core. Words cannot express how badass armored core is. I havnt actually played all the games but it is hands down the best mech simulator. So many parts and different ways to deck out your robot. 9ball was so cool when i first saw him. There is actually a competitive pvp scene for these games... or at least there was. I played last raven briefly on Xlink kai. Damn the people were too good haha. I'd like to think of myself as a pretty good gamer but i couldnt even concieve of some of the moves people were using. In my single player games I always opted to use the weapon cores instead of overboost. But damn it turns out overboost toggling is integral for mobility. Here is the video that opened my eyes to the skill ceiling in AC.

Pretty much my all time favorite RPG. Build up weapons, rebuild cities in the present and see the results in the future - it has it all. And I have a special place in my heart for cel-shaded graphics. If you're one for emulating or even burning ps2 games, this is so, so worth it. And I do believe it runs on the ps3. Ah, only now did I realize it was recommended way back in the thread. I'll go on to recommend another Level-5 RPG for the PS2 then, since both dark cloud 1 and 2 are already recommended: If this game only consisted of the many minigames found in it - I would still play it for hours. Add in a great story experience and lots of customization, and you have a winner. Great game!
