I just thought they look similar and wanted to share this. I was surprised by the overall similar half moon form and the two teeth at the bottom, whereas the wings are pretty different.
Mutalisk and Mailoc similar looks

Starcraft rips off 40k pretty hard. I've heard rumors to the effect of Starcraft originally being a 40k game, but Blizzard and GW had a falling out, so it turned into it's own franchise. No idea on the truth of this. 40k's first incarnation came out in '87.

The games were released so close after each other that there would have been no time to steal anything important like a multiplayer unit. I think I remember seeing the Mutalisk in a Alpha picture, but I am not sure. No stealing going on, just a coincidence, imo.

The Beta was released at the very end of 1997 (Jedi Knight was out since October) according to the same site, where the Muta looks like the one we know (or similar. The picture from this article isn't perfect). The Muta shape could very well be inspired by this Star Wars creature.

I'm not totally sure either though...

Even if that's the specifics of the case though, considering that, you'd be hard-pressed to say 40k didn't also help inspire SC2. Protoss=Eldar, Terran=Space Marines-ish, and Zerg is a pretty blatant Tyranid hive. And either way, GW would have been doing a damned impressive job to rip off SC2 for 40k.

I often see this but I disagree with "Protoss=Eldar", when I first played the demo of Starcraft in '98 with just Terran and Zerg I remember thinking then it was very like 40k, but when I got the full game I never thought Protoss were like Eldar. The only real similarity is they're both technologically advanced but none of the units are similar and the lore is quite different. The Eldar initially were 'space elves' in the same way you had Squats for Dwarves and Orks for Orcs. Protoss were more based on the standard sci-fi green men with big heads, no mouths and psionic powers. Also when Starcraft was conceived the Eldar were different to how they are now, there were no Dark Eldar, they kind of fitted under the Eldar army, so they were a bit more piratey than they are now (like in Rogue Trader). If anything in 40k Protoss are more like the Tau but they were released after Starcraft. Protoss are almost certainly mildly influenced by Eldar, in the same way they're influenced by a lot of alien races in sci-fi, but I definitely don't think they're based on them. Back on topic, I never noticed the resemblance between the Mailoc and Mutalisk before now even though I played both games around the same time, I used hate those Mailocs

I'm almost 100% sure that it was Warcraft that was supposed to be a Games Workshop IP game. If you look at the back story for the Warcraft universe it bears some uncanny similarities to the universe of Warhammer Fantasy. All modern Fantasy and Science Fiction borrow from each other. Starcraft borrows heavily from the 40k universe which in turn borrows from things like Isaac Asimov and Dune.
