There are some things which are true about nearly everybody, and there are some things which are true only about you. Often life becomes battle of deciding just what those are, while defending against people trying to decide for you. Some things are true about nearly everybody, but far less than nearly everybody knows exactly what those things are.
Who doesn't like a good sunset? Is that a universally human desire? Is it a desire produced by our culture? The answers, in order, are that-mean-guy-you-don't-like, how-could-it-not-be and what-are-you-talking-about-that's-silly.
Passion
What else does red mean? Red means hot! Bodies get hot when they do exciting things! Bodies spew red when locked in passionate warfare! It sort of fits together!
If your monitor is more than 640/480 you can probably see that there's two more pictures coming, and they're also sunsets. They're taken with the same camera, in virtually the same place, with the same lens, just on different occasions. A used D50 and its kit lens I bought off my brother before the trip, if that sort of thing intrigues you.
You might be aware that a great deal of literature deals with how a personality is split up. In James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, woman is split into Mother, Virgin, and Whore. How can someone be all these at once? How can someone be entirely one of them? Neon Genesis Evangelion splits woman into Woman, Scientist, and Mother. Slightly less offensive, but essentially the same problem. To dedicate oneself to any of them means giving up the others, at least temporarily. To your job, to your children, to yourself. Do you switch personality's based on environment? Do you give them a hierarchy of importance? Can you manage to keep them all in your head at the same time?
A Brood War professional is best represented by the passionate sunset. They give up everything to play the best game they can, toil for hours and hours, bear themselves to the mercy of the stage, and as we watch them we feel a little envious that one can devote themselves so wholly to a single thing, and truly know the limit of their ability. In a way we live vicariously thinking about that, and to become a fan of a player is to decide that he will do what we can not (due to whatever variety of restraints we feel are upon us). Red is very popular. Perhaps most popular, and most sexy. Most fantasies are red in this nature.
Purity
In reality, 100% passion is irresponsible and negligent. However progamers may seem on the stage, they have other things to take care of, other responsibilities to tend to. While it isn't sexy or necessarily what I'd fantasize about, I often imagine how honourable it would be to be completely responsible, to be untouchable by criticism.
White light, if you'll excuse the racial undertones, is most associated with the angelic and the mother. How could mom ever have racy red sex? She's so pure! Or your sister, or your daughter, or whatever other figure that in your life has never been an object of desire, but rather one of comfort. Excuse the sexism. Your father, your brother maybe. The King or the President or the Prime Minister, if you happen to care about those. The figure that is not supposed to have his or her own desires, but be devoted to all others, nonthreatening, a bringer of comfort without the stress that can come from passion.
Weirdness
There are some things that are neither passionate or pure. Call it creativity? Call it wanting to be different? The sea is just the wrong shade of pink here, that's why we build custom planets.
Is what makes a person individual the degree at which each facet describes them? Or are we all equally described by each, however in our own ways that might be? Am I 33.3% of each, or 50% Weird, 30% Passion? That doesn't seem right. Certainly I value them differently, and in different moods that could change. Perhaps it's true that they cannot coexist at the same time, but must be separated at different times like the sunset? How can I be Weirdly Passionate about Purity? Actually that sounds very possible. But not always. Sometimes I will just use Zerglings, sometimes I will use them with Lurkers, sometimes the Lurkers alone, or sometimes both with Hydralisks. If I put these pictures in various layers of opacity it would most likely look terrible, therefore human beings are probably more complex than sunsets (but not more complex than Brood War), if our only way of measuring complexity is varying combination.
If you're into this sort of thing, you can look at other pictures I took.
