Yeah.
That's right.
Food.
So I went to ranch 99 to get stuff for dukbokki.
Disclaimer:
It was really tasty, but my attempts did get sidetracked by my mom, who was like YOU MUST ADD CARROTS, and YOU MUST ADD CORN STARCH
Ok, with that out of the way, I can say that I made it. Everyone but my mom enjoyed it. My mom just sat there and was like "this is.... fine...." and she normally gets all excited when I cook >.>
Firstly: gochujang is amazing. IT took me close to half an hour to find it in the store, because it wasn't in the regular sauce section. It was with dry chilies o.o
Secondly: the end product was tasty, but had too much carrot, and turned out to be gelatinous after it cooled :/
Anyways, was really tasty. Not appetizing looking. Did add ramen though because I didn't know if there would be enough for all. Timed it right this time though, noodles stayed thin. And yes, they are much better that way. Dad was like ARE YOU SURE YOU SHOULD TAKE IT OFF THE HEAT IT WILL BE UNDERCOOKED.
White person logic
Also got more shin ramen to not fail. Also got chappegetti, or however you spell that, so I could try a different type. They have shin ramen on sale. 5 packs for 3.50, or 5 bowl thingies for 2.50. Not sure which to do. Bowls look smaller, but I'm not entirely sure.
Tomorrow will finally make cookieish things. Will try to make samgeopssal soon, but they didn't have it in stock and I can't cook it for my family. Although my mom has no problems with going through 4 bowls of cereal, there is too much fat in samgeopssal to try it once ;(
Time for the pictures
Carrots sank to the bottom. COuldn't find camera while it was fresh.
Yup, too much carrot.
Why didn't I find this stuff sooner.
My junkfood. Still haven't opened chocopies. Must do so soon >.>
Different type of interaction (girl focused non-specific relationship rant of self deprecation) + Show Spoiler +I have lots of friends. Lead two fairly large clubs at school. Get along with everyone. but for some reason, I can't get the balls to ask somebody out. Not going to be a girl blog with ooh, aah she's so perfect, but rather a why the hell am I so scared. If she says no, which is unlikely, what's gonna happen? Not really that important, but I felt like I had to get it out there.

I had tteokbokki for the first time about a month ago and it was delicious. Mine didn't have all those carrots though. Korean progamers = imba. Korean girls = imba. Korean food = imba.

Sometimes, you just have to Nike it.
Walk to up to her, and in that moment of adrenaline as you fight with yourself, just start saying the words "Can I ask you a question?" The moment the "C" from "Can" leaves your lips it becomes so easy. The key is winning the fight against yourself.

Chapagetti is amazing. Just don't prepare it like normal ramen, I know I did the first time since I'm an idiot and don't read instructions, or you'll be disappointed.
|
haha yea i can tell by the picture u took it after it got "sticky." I cooked it several times too and that's how it looks 30 minutes later. But man..i messed up bad the last time i made it becuz i put in too much water. I think controlling the amount of water you put in it is KEY to making good thuck bohk gi.
And I never seen one with carrots before but i guess it's up to the individual.

what does the actual rice cake in the tteokbokki thing taste like? Also, this thread reminds me that I need to pick up some shin.
|
Haha, Choco Pie! I used to eat those as my birthday cakes when I was really young.
Interesting food you described. I'll be sure to try it out when I can.
|
Looks delicious~ Yeah if you want it less sticky you need to control the amount of water and heat as well as the state of your rice cakes. Frozen rice cake = bad. Super soft heated thawed rice cake = also bad. Before it gets tossed into the hot mix of sauce and vegetables, rice cakes should be non-frozen but not pre-cooked.
|
Nice, I love ddukbokki. Did you soak the rice cakes in a bowl of water for an hour ish? Cuz I find that always helps with the consistency. Don't cook it just frozen.
Ah! now i'm hungry.. It looks good!

^this. So many of my white friends fail at making chappagetti. It's not noodle soup!

Mine were actually thawed to begin with.
THe picture was with bad lighting, it actually is a bit more red than that.

Hm, never tried it with carrots (don't plan to) but hard boiled egg added in is ok too.
|
It looks off to me. The color, definitely but the carrots ruin the effect, too. Koreans usually slice them long, thin and at an angle. I just can't get over the impression that this is nothing but beef stew gone wrong. Good effort, though. If you sand special ddukboki (the actual name here) you have to throw in the egg and a slice of american cheese on top.

this reminds me i need to make a run at h-mart....

i thought it was 99 ranch o.o
i ordered this at a korean tofu joint the other day. It was called "sticky rice balls with vegetables" lol. 2 slices of carrot in mine >.>

Choco pies are B tier junk food bro. Hook yourself up with some ice cream bars (red bean and melon flavors are best), Coconut Butter crackers, Shrimp crackers, the squid ball shaped crackers with peanuts in them, and those sandwhich type crackers with strawberry cream.
Dukbokki looks totally wrong too lol. You're not supposed to add carrots I think, but definitely not chopped like that, you should have julienned them, and the color is totally off (I don't know if thats from the carrots or from you messing up the recipe). I don't know how it tastes but with that kind of color... its probably not accurate at all. Also it looks like you just used rice cakes, you should try to also add some fish cakes and hard boiled egg if you can, they both go well in it. Good shit on trying though, its hard for non-koreans with no exposure to korean foods to get close.
