The game 'Smite' looks promising. As a competitive gamer, I would love to see rivalry in the game creation industry. Now that Riot Games' with their game 'League of Legends' have shown how succesful the free to play market/concept is, I hope many succesful games will follow. Free to play games allow for a big, growing community which is just what eSports need. Sadly, League of Legends is not a great game. It looks like it's still in beta and Riot Games is not really being innovative, therefore, I feel like another competitive free to play game could easily take over and become bigger than League of Legends currently is. Another argument to support this notion is the fact that League of Legends is a way too passive game, which, in my opinion, is not what eSports need as it causes unexciting viewership (no big plays).
Smite is the game that comes to mind first, that could possibly that over League's #1 spot. Smite is a moba game (League of Legends-like) that is played from 3rd person view (World of Warcraft-like) and it is currently still in alpha, with beta coming soon (tm). The game's developer is High-Rez Studios, a company that has been responsible for creating the succesful 'Tribes' game series, also free to play. Smite will be free to play and basically follow the same kind of microtransaction system League offers.
I'm looking forward to a competitive computer game that will help eSports grow bigger and I hope Smite will be this game. What is your opinion on Smite thus far? Does anyone else look forward to it?
Doesn't look expectator-friendly, at least not from that camera angle. Also, from players perspective the screen during the engagements look really polluted.
Games should be made to look clean, however nowadays the screen is bombarded with lots of shining explosions and +200 DMG +200 DMG +200 DMG SNARED useless texts which makes everything harder to figure out what is actually happening.
The game that can allow competitivity (high skill cap, rewards the best player) and looks clean both from players and expectator POV, and is exciting to watch will be the sucessor of what BW was in Korea.
So I tried the game some yesterday during the time the beta was open, I am having fun so far. I like the art direction they are using for it. I've only got to play two games; However, I am looking forward to play some more when they open for testing again today. I don't have much feedback yet since I haven't had a lot of time with it. I have played only zues so far and enjoying playing him. The games are pretty quick though, towers do feel like they could last longer and feel like it doesn't take much damage to bring them down I think its pretty cool that you fight a boss in the opponents game to win the game.
Smite looks fun and could be a refreshing twist to the genre that seems to be getting pretty rinsed out and boring. Every company is making a moba that looks just like the other one these days. I'm surprised there isn't a "Make Your Own MOBA Kit" at local stores right now. Hirez usually make games that feel pretty good. I'll be looking forward to this one.
Saw it at PAX as well and it looked meh, it seemed really awkward to play and spectate with that point of view. I'll probably give it a try because the concept in theory should be fun and unique.
I wouldn't hold your breath on it beating out League though.
So far it feels pretty nice, you do have still have to have awareness and still have to be careful when you push because its easy for someone to sneak up behind you since its not top down view. I have played Zues and Hades and the abilities feel pretty good, it still has some of the same strategy of a standard moba. Latency seems pretty good so far abilities fire pretty accurately and im on DSL. The toolkit of the two gods I have tried are pretty fun, I like hades just a little more.Smite feels pretty addictive. It is pretty easy on new players it seems so far, they have a mode for new players as you can allow auto buy and auto level if they choose, for the first 6 account levels it is forced turned on.(that could change since it is beta). Graphics aren't top of the line, its more artistic, and the gameplay is fun enough that I don't even pay attention to how the game looks.
Why did you take a pot shot at League of Legends? More talking about Smite and it's merits and less of your own bais personal opinion of how bad you think other games are in a similar genre please.
Smite will probably find it's own niche market away from Top down ARTS games like LoL/Dota/HoN etc. Much like how many MMOs have found a niche market while competing against WoW but fail to over taking it in number of paid subscribers. If I find a streamer that's entertaining ill definitely keep an eye on it before i give my own subjective opition.
This looks interesting. First reply is just closed-minded and is disappointed it's not a LoL/dota clone. Second reply...if this becomes a actual competitive esport, I highly doubt they'll spectate in player view...don't worry.
I hate doing this, but if anyone has an extra beta key, I'd be very thankful.
I wouldn't mind paying 20 bucks for a preorder, but a pack of extra gods doesn't help me at all since I'm the type that would only play as 1 or 2 gods. I've talked to a mod at hirez but it seems that there is no way I could get ingame currency instead of a gods starterpack. Paying 20 bucks for a bunch of gods of which i might only use 1, seems like a waste.
Anyways, watching videos of the game in action, it looks like a lot more fun than all the other mobas I've tried. No idea about any esports potential yet, but it's definitely got a lot of fun with friends potential.

ditto, I'll share my experiences once I've had a few rounds under my belt
edit: Seems like something is wrong with my account. Although I pre-ordered and downloaded the game, I can't login. Guess I'll have to wait for customer support to get back to me T_T
1) Massive balance issues, certain Gods are simply overpowered beyond reason. Stuns that scale with damage that last for more than 2 seconds make no sense at all.
2) Too similar to League in a variety of ways. No stats means no real roles, but it also means scaling is gear dependent and not level dependent. Once someone gets on top of you in a lane, it just snowballs heavily to the point where you have no choice but to simply leave because you'll just continue to feed.
3) Tanky DPS again is too strong in this game just like League.
I feel 3rd person mobas are very hard to execute properly, but there are a few games of this particular catagory. The other ones I've played so far are Cyphers Online and Land of Chaos online. I felt Cyphers Online was fun, but some particular classes are too strong such as sword-based classes and female fist fighters (brawlers?) and Land of Chaos has the same feeling to it. By overpowered I mean these classes are almost always dominant in every match and just faceroll you with the exception of mirror matches.

Pretty much what Smite is at the moment, pick Artemis/Odin or lose.
