I don't think it can really be a gimmick if it completely changes the way the game is played.

UPDATE:

The map looks gorgeous now. Two more gods should be added in the next 2 weeks. I'm glad they have enough gods to finally be able to handle drafting, and I hope they keep taking more and more tips from other mobas because the game needs a bit more depth. I can understand if you don't like the game, but it definitely deserves some respect and it's only getting better.

I like over-the-shoulder view soooooo much better. I have way more control over my character's movement and I feel more flexible, lol. I've been playing this a lot more that LoL.

So far my favorite God is Artemis. I haven't lost a single game with her yet :3 and she rapes in 1v1 situations.

They've added 4 new gods since I started playing about 2 months ago. You can buy this package that's around $30 and it'll unlock all the gods in the game, plus the ones they release in the future. But that takes ruins the point of grinding for Favor

Ymir is a beast. He's my favorite.

I've played a bit today. Barring the servers going down(hell its a 0.1 beta, this is expected), this game is much better than I initially thought.

First of all, the main difference between smite and other MOBA games is the amount of skill it requires to land auto-attacks. I know this sounds silly, but the longer the game goes on, the harder it is to land your autoattacks. If you are playing a physical carry, this is crucial.

Secondly, every skill is ground-based or direction-based, never targeted(unless it's a self skill). This makes it that harder to land anything.

Thirdly, last hitting is HARD! not only you have to aim your attack, it has to aim /that/ creep!

Then, the difference of the business. Riot makes you grind or buy each champion. Dota allows every hero at once.
Smite has a merged interface: while they still profit from each god, you can also buy all of them(and future ones) at once, essentially making the game a standard pay-to-play. I'd say this is a really good thing, taking the best from both worlds.

I sincerely hope this becomes more famous. It's a high-ceiling skill game, and I found it to be very enjoyable. Along with Natural Selection 2, I'd say they are the next "e-sports" to become big, without having a name behind it(LoL and Dota2 had Dota, WoW had Warcraft, CS:GO had CS, SC2 had SC etc etc etc).

Hmmm I guess it did sound like that.

On LoL, you can't have all champions without buying each one separately(which costs a fuckton)
LoL players often say that one of the "fun" part of LoL is farming for champions, while Dota players(such as myself) would rather buy every character one time and never more instead of grinding for them.

So yeah, "the best of both worlds" in the sense that both 'sides' would be appealed by this business model. Of course, dota players would rather not buy anything - but then again, I hate to suck a game's resource and have fun but offer nothing in return to the developer. Business gotta profit after all, and it's not easy to follow valve's business model of items since you first gotta have a lot of players to make that useful.

for the record, I didn't buy anything yet tho

the game is good and all but I won't be able to play it just now due to how annoying server crashes are. hopefully they aren't as common as I think they are.

I used to play during closed beta and I want to know one thing : did they nerf Hand of Gods ?
It used to be OP as fuck, is it still the case ?
From what I remember, the game was pretty fun.

I don't know specifics, but from what I remember it definitely got nerfed from how it was back in the day. I remember everyone carried it. Also I'm not sure if back then you could also sell your abilities and buy new ones. If so, you can't anymore. So if you get hand of god, it wont help much later on I don't think. But yeah, definitely not even close to as dominant as it was before.
