Disclaimer: This thread is serious. I'm not trolling. I'm not a mindless fanboy. I am genuinely interested.
I'm sure people have talked about this within some thread or another, but I haven't seen a thread dedicated to it. So, here it is: With all Stephano's recent success, do you think people will start (seriously) calling him a bonjwa?
The last thing I want is for this thread to be some sort of flamewar / balance whine. I am just curious as to whether the TL community thinks there will ever be an SC2 bonjwa, and if one of said bonjwas will be Stephano.
My opinion: First, let it be known that I played SC:BW, but I was never into the competitive scene. I know the term bonjwa, and mostly what it means. But I assume I don't fully realize the gravity of such a statement. With that being said, and with my understanding of what a bonjwa is, I feel like he doesn't 'deserve' it yet, but if he continues on his path for, say.. 6 more months or so, then he will be worthy of the title. I am a fan of Stephano, but I wouldn't say I am a 'fanboy'. I see him as an extremely talented and quite mannered player. I respect him for that, but you won't see me painting my chest or holding up some crazy sign at tournaments.
On a side note, has there ever been a foreigner bonjwa? My (very) cursory research shows that this has indeed never happened. Regardless of SC:BW/SC2, do you ever think a foreigner will be able (or be allowed) to have such a title?

I don't know how easy it will be to achieve bonjwa status in sc2, but I imagine it would be a korean who gets it if it ever happens.
I don't think anyone could seriously claim him as a bonjwa currently though imo.

You gotta dominate for few years to be called one. This community should stop using term bonjwa too often, or it will lose it's meaning.

Why do so many people think that he never will be? Honestly, if he continues winning as much as he has I don't see why he wouldn't be. I don't think he's quite there yet though, as he hasn't won many huge events.

The dude has a winrate in the 70%'s, not even close to what a bonjwa would have. If he continues to win foreign events this year you could call it the stephano era, but no way is he a bonjwa. I can't wait to see how he does against the koreans at mlg.

Stephano is very mortal. It showed all to well vs polt. No he wont be bonjwa. And i have a feeling he wont win mlg

There are no SC2 bonjwas.
Not to say that there will never be, but TL generally disapproves of calling any SC2 player the b-word as it's hyperbolic and much, much too soon (especially for foreigners).

I honestly don't think there are any that can claim that title yet in SC2. The game is still too volatile with patches and expansions yet to come. MVP is probably the closest thing we have to the "b word" so far.

Threads like these existed before, especially with Stephano. They usually end in huge flame wars between two extreme opinions. Additionally everyone defines the term 'bonjwa' different. I would erase this thread for the sake of this community. This won't end well. There will just be posts like "He is the best player ever" and "OMG he is NOWHERE near the level of the koreans" etc. etc., rarely something in between

These poll options are as terribly as the rest of the OP itself. They don't come close to representing the range of opinions that could be held.

He has a 70% winrate against foreigners and you think that is bonjwa status? Are you retarded?
And btw, flash is in some sense a bonjwa, but you realise he technically isn't one because he hasn't dominated the scene for a number of years?

Bonjwa is a term used to describe a player who dominates the StarCraft scene for a long period of time. A bonjwa has a very high winning percentage and successive title wins. However, a bonjwa is not defined by his statistics or records. Rather, a general consensus is reached that he is the most dominant progamer of his era.
A bonjwa is someone who ticks all these boxes uncontestably. Stephano has shown no interest in going to korea, so there is no way for him to ever become a bonjwa until he starts winning endless gsl's. Also, with the looming BW switch, i doubt that the BW scene will allow someone to become one without the 'REAL BW' pros having an impact on the scene.
I think the real question is, can we ever have a Bonjwa in SC2 ?
