Because I want to be a part of the community. I don't feel like I can post, talk, or participate in the community in any meaningful way without being told to literally kill myself. As someone who has spent months on and off considering just that, having people confirm all those dark thoughts isn't great. A high-ish mmr would mean i would feel like a subhuman mongoloid every time I played a game or said something that wasn't generic praise or twitch chat spam.

I guess for me, I really want to improve my gameplay in dota and I want to be able to put what I've learned from watching into my own gameplay. Knowing is one thing, executing it is another story. MMR offers me a measurement which I can use to approximate my level of play. I'm not too sure how strong the correlation is between MMR and a person's skill, but it should be accurate enough for the purpose of improving one's own play. Of course, replays and thinking about what to do is more important to me though; MMR just provides me an indication of whether I'm improving on average.

ya i hate to say it, but sometimes i don't have patience for one of my friends who we play with on a regular basis..i wish he would attempt to improve but he's just a very lazy player. I'm by no means perfect, but i shouldn't be out carrying a free farm PA. or like in the same game, we had an entirely useless windrunner.

you can post here no problem as long as you can deal with yango and sn0_man as well as a few others correcting you. i say stupid shit all of the time because I'm not a professional player. sorry to hear about your past, though.

Yeah, zturchan, I am dumpster tier MMR and I still post my opinion on the game. Discussing the game and playing the game are two separate things. Just be open to new builds or ideas on how to play and that what you might be doing is terrible. Like I used to make wand every game, but in the last 6 months I have start switched over to magic stick only(with a few exceptions).

Don't be afraid to talk about the game or have an opinion. Most of the really good players here don't have anything to prove, so they won't talk down to you. They might just point out you are wrong.

yep, this is a game where you learn through experience. so unless you have specific experience (and a lot of it), maybe you have this idea in your head and its kinda right, but someone with more experience can say it simpler or make more sense of it, or maybe correct a small aspect of it. I find that discussing this sorta stuff on LD has been helpful and made me a better player even if I don't have the experience of a veteran.

as for the wand thing, I've gotten in the habit of getting a stick too often I think... but its so useful!

People often forget that getting better at something is doing a bunch of tiny things differently, rather that one huge things(like being more efficient with your support gold by not buying a full magic wand), learning to farm efficiently, or checking the mini-map more often.

I need to finish Dragon Age and get back into Dota. Maybe tonight will be my return.

This game has a ridiculous learning curve so I never begrudge people who are trying to improve themselves. I've been playing for a decade now and still learn new things every day. Like yesterday I learned when you Spiked Carapace Zeuses big nuke the damn static field hits you first so that's what you reflect

I would never begrudge a player who is trying to improve his/her self. I only hate those that make no effort to improve themselves, or remain willfully ignorant.

exactly. or if you're playing a new hero/want to improve and you simply have no idea how it's played and you waste an hour of my time. just look up a damn guide or gameplay on youtube..it's not hard.

a wand is actually better than a bracer though, and the parts are so cheap you can use your unreliable gold to make it...

I guess if you're a support who doesn't buy wards/smoke you have lots of item slots anyway so you only need the stick..
everything that rises must converge

This seems like a pretty rosy view of the posting culture here. This thread is full of good players saying "I want to improve my MMR so I won't have to put up with trash players who are worse than me." The QQ thread is full of "Oh my god I played in a game with a guy who was worse than me, and he was SO BAD." Basically this whole site* is people posting about how obnoxious it is that they have to play with people who are worse at Dota than they are.

I think it's not unreasonable to feel talked-down-to if you hang out here and aren't very good at Dota.

I'd argue that yours is a pretty cynical way of viewing the community. QQ thread is people venting. Everyone needs to blow off steam somewhere, and that thread should never be considered anything more than that. Overall though, unless you're actively trying to argue something that is completely wrong with someone who is objectively better and has considerably more knowledge, all ideas are welcome. And if you are wrong, and someone has tried this, usually they are willing to discuss why it is the way it is with you. Provided of course you're willing to actually discuss it that is.

For all the answers in this thread that have been 'I want to play with better people' I'd say just as many are 'I'd like to reach my personal peak' as well.

Its mostly just as a mental thing of how far can I go I guess. I have a bit of a thing similar to zturchan where I feel extremely uncomfortable in discussions where I feel I can offer something but aren't necessarily the best in the world (sort of thing) so its hard, but I try to disguise that with a degree of brashness. With higher MMR I'd be more comfortable about it I think.

On the subject of posting culture: I still maintain that fast diffusal on Naga works for and is comfortable for me, damn it.

Which is funny because no matter your rating you'll always have the opportunity to blame your teammates.
You must gather your party before venturing forth.
