Ah, ok, because the Define R4 is like $120 in soap's post and you mentioned it to be closer to $80. I had no idea how the two dollars compared so. ^^

It's $80 when it's on sale but it doesn't go on sale that often anymore and ME hasn't had stock of it for a while now.

Don't plan to have many programs open at the same time. Not yet convinced that SSD is worth the price.

This comes in slightly over $1300 before tax at $1318 but it is overclockable and has an SSD.

My aversion to overclocking is that the voltage can hurt the processor, which just sucks, and I don't know how to negate that and be sure that overclocking won't shorten the CPU's lifespan.

And will this work with the build you made? I assume it will but I've learned not to trust my assumptions when it comes to these things...

CPU and GPU overclocking are not related. GPU overclocking is done through software in Windows and GPU voltage is by default locked (and only changeable with cards with unlocked voltage, and after going into settings and unlocking GPU voltage).

CPU overclocking, just follow some instructions, Cyro has a Haswell so he can help you there. It's really difficult to destroy a processor unless you're very careless or lack common sense.

Yes, that wireless adapter will work.

Do you often seen larger SSDs, 500/750/1000 on sale for the Holidays? Or do you think this is approximately the best deals to be had?

I think most of the sales focus around 120GB / 250GB but then again I never really looked at larger SSDs until this year since it wasn't until last year that the Samsung 840 and Crucial M500 made the larger sizes affordable.

From this year, both the Samsung 840 and Crucial M500 ~500GB have been down to ~$300.

The Crucial M500 has been on sale for quite a lot this month so.. it could go down further? Who knows. Samsung 840 250GB was $150 last year.

The catch on SSD size is while 240GB allows to put all software there without concern, 500GB would allow media as well but that offers little to no advantage.

Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H @ $130 ($115 after mail in rebate)
http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=84042&promoid=1287

The difference between Z87 boards on a casual overclock isn't worth $35.

MSI GTX 770 2GB Twin Frozr IV @ $340
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=84358&promoid=1287

Without overclock, the R9 280X is better for the same price.

Switch the Z87 motherboard for a Gigabyte B85M-D3H @ $80 ((pricematch with http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8324503 )
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=84036

On mATX boards the wireless adapter would block the graphics card cooling, the Z87 board I linked for the same $80 after rebate has a slot behind.

The difference between an Asrock Z87 and current price of a Z87X-UD3H is $10, not $35. And the UD3H is a $160 MSRP board, it's an extremely good deal at $130. If you want to deal with shitty mail in rebates than fine.

Yes, the R9 280X is better but I just put in the GTX 700 because that's what he had? Maybe he needs CUDA support?

No, the wireless adapter would not block the GPU. There is a slot between the PCIe slots.

Here I'll waste my 1500th post on you.

Larger SSD = More NAND = Higher endurance = longer life. I'm still waiting for SSD's to adopt PCIe, x4 is ~1800MB/s while SATA3 SSD's are stuck at ~500MB/s.

The difference between an entry Z87 board and a good Z87 board is that you can actually get past 4.3GHz because the motherboard isn't complete garbage. You are spending extra money to Overclock so why the fuck would you cheap out on the most important part to a stable overclock? I suggest you inform yourself on the short comings of cheap motherboards.

Not overclocking a graphics card is so ass backwards... ALL GPU's can be overclocked, not doing so is a waste of money.

People SLI/CF open cooler cards ALL the time and it doesn't make the GPU catch on fire so having a small networking card right below doesn't mean jack cooling wise.

DON'T EVER include rebates as a reduction in purchase price. YOU are still paying FULL price (and tax if applicable) for the component.
Team Liquid needs more Terrans.

Hi TL,

Looking for a build for my parents, but I'm wondering if I can perhaps use a smaller tower / micro motherboard combo.

What is your budget?
<$1,000

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920 x 1080, but it's possible that they will hook this up to the TV, so I'm not sure if that affects anything.

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
N/A

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Typical computer usage. They watch foreign flicks.

Do you intend to overclock?
No.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No.

Do you need an operating system?
Will be buying a copy of Win 7.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
Already have a monitor/TV.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
I will be buying this SSD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147247

I don't think my parents will be using much space for programs at all. If they do, I will take care of that in the future.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA; there is also a MicroCenter where I live.

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Newegg would be nice.

All I have in my cart so far is the RAM (aside from the other two items):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231544

I don't mind splurging a bit on a case that is nice to use, which is why I put the budget rather high for what I figure should be a fairly inexpensive build since a graphics card won't be necessary.

By the way, is there a reason why RAM is super pricey now?

Never mind, they don't want one anymore lol. Sorry.

Also, thanks for explaining the RAM prices.

Hm, I'm reading that the 3GB on the R9 280X will make it more useful than the GTX 770 in the future. Yet right now, that the GTX 770 is an overall better card. All this from tomshardware threads. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Both are similar, it really comes down to price and whether you value AMD's Mantle or Nvidia's Shadow Play and G Sync more.
