Edit: @Grobyc, there's a tablet thread on TL somewhere I think.

How good is Seagate's 600 SSD? The only two SSDs I've ever seen recommended in this thread are the 840 EVO (Samsung) and the M500 (Crucial).

Not sure if you have your eyes set on the Galaxy Tab but the 2013 Nexus 7 could be had from shop.ca for like $150 a week or two ago. Not sure if it's still going or it's been sold out.

Seagate 600 is a good option if the price is right (and you don't need hardware encryption, which most people don't). A lot of SSDs out there are good these days, and 600 has been out long enough and seemingly without major issues. It has better performance than many SSDs. The controller is somewhat proven by this point; it's also in Corsair Neutron / Neutron GTX, and I'd trust Seagate on firmware and validation more than, say... a lot of the smaller companies making SSDs.

But it's just another SSD, and it's not cheaper than say 840 EVO usually.

I can assure you that my monitor cost more and is better than yours, and yet it requires a dual-link DVI connector.

HDMI and Display Port require a license to use on a product. DVI doesn't. VGA should just die though.

Thanks Ata for the build. I guess this thread really enlightened me on what is truly required. I'll be doing my shopping next weekend and hopefully catch great deals.

So if I understand correctly, a graphic card bigger than 2gb is only required for a bigger resolution than 1920x1080. And it will run any game at full so no need to invest in a 3gb to be ''safe'' right?
And I also thought that RAM is the most important resource. Like if I want to play an MMO at full setting, 8gb is plenty? I shouldn't double it to make sure it runs smoothly all the time? I guess the internet connection is most important not to lag on raids I guess.
It just all makes me realize how clueless I was about it all.

Regarding a monitor, if i hook it up to my gpu using dvi port, there will be no sound correct?
but if i hook it up with an HDMI there will be sounds? (assuming the monitor has built in speakers of course)

however, people say the built in audio is crap and you should buy a speaker set, even a $20 one.

if that is true, whats the point of an HDMI in existence if DVI does what HDMI does without sound and your going to buy a pair of speakers anyways?

Thx

There's audio over DVI-D as well, but it seems to be a bit of an obscure feature and I don't know where to find documentation about that. I don't think it's in the actual standard.

It's just that HDMI and DVI-D are related and use the same format for the digital video signal. A lot of graphics cards also transmit the HDMI audio signal over DVI-D.

I only know on the NVIDIA side, some card suddenly introduced that. My GTX 560 Ti can apparently do it, though I never tested this. I'm thinking the monitor also has to support this, taking an HDMI audio signal that comes into it over the DVI-D connection, not just the graphics card.

I understand your saying HDMI is better than DVI now,

RAM is the least important resource in gaming as nearly all games are 32-bit so they are limited to 2GB of RAM. Unused RAM is useless RAM. Battlefield 4 and Star Citizen are the only games that come to mind that are 64-bit. And even than, 8GB should be enough.

If you want to play the latest AAA titles, you'll want more than 3GB or more VRAM even at 1080p.

Lag is a network issue so yes it would be dependent on your internet connection. If you're talking about maintaining a playable FPS than it would come down to mostly the CPU in large scale raids.

I realize it might just be me who has had issues with shop.ca but there is no question that their customer service is beyond garbage. (calling them takes you to voicemail....)

What Sky said. The build i throw at you was put together in a rush, so you can probably find better deals and etc. I personally love these things and if you do as well, then I recommend taking your time and understanding a little bit more about different components. Dont expect to land amazing deals on blackfriday/etc as you need to know what the good deals are and order right away (there is no time to double check with people on forums), and even at that you need to get lucky as things are gone real fast. I also live in Montreal and Ill be happy to help you with any questions you might have (building or purchasing).

I think 2gb VRAM is fine ATM (i hear bf4 doesn't have issues with 2gb, even though it allocates more @1080 even without antialiasing) but i wouldn't really pick it out, i would probably prefer 7950/7970/280x (280?) if i was going past a weaker 2gb card but didn't want to step up to a 290/780.

Next gen will have 3 or 4gb VRAM on mainstream i think

I was especially talking about VGA. My monitor cost less than €90. 1080p though and it looks all right.

I have two VGA monitors that while trash (and one is 1280x1024, other 1024x768 i believe) they work ok as secondaries, unthinkably better than just having one monitor for basic tasks like desktop, browsing or general multitasking. 90 euro to replace one with the cheapest random 1080 dvi monitor would be 90 euro that i had to spend on a monitor instead of more GPU power for my primary screen, which is why for example - an r9 290 would be an inferior choice to a 780 for me (no analog outs) unless active adapters are easily available and usable, because adding the cost of a new secondary monitor and also an aftermarket cooler would be awkward and break the price:performance ratio

I think a DVI/VGA adapter is like €2 though, not to mention that both the 290 and the 780 seem to have the same outputs?

On the Radeon card you linked, the specifications say it has 2x DVI-D. The EVGA card has 1x DVI-I, 1x DVI-D. Those VGA adapters should only work on DVI-I because that can be both analog and digital. I assume that €2 adapter can only be that cheap because the analog DVI signal is the same as the VGA signal.

Take a closer look at the bottom DVI port on the GTX 780 you linked and the R9 290 you linked.

Actually, here:

They're replacing the GPU in the 280x with a new revision, maybe something to do with it.

7970's may still be available for similar price (it's same as "old" 280x, anyway..) or another similar GPU.

Some 290's seem to be unlocking into 290x's which is pretty insane price:performance
