What's the difference between HD7870 and R9 270X cards? I understand that the underlying chip is the same and that R9 270X are a newer rebranding, but do they offer anything more than the older HD7870s? I'm asking because the HD7870s are ~20€ cheaper than the R9 270X, which I found somewhat suspicious.
Thanks in advance!

I don't know... does that ever make sense? Can't you just always buy a normal, stronger card? Even if you save some money through their idea, you'll avoid any SLI headaches by paying more for a normal card. The increased performance might just end up being something theoretical, and in practice a single card should always be better regarding issues like weird stutter problems and how the mouse input feels regarding latency.

It'll be priced between the 770 and the 780, or it won't make any sense. It's gk104 just like the 770, with 25% of the cores disabled on each die.

They seem pretty much the same, maybe a minor difference or two. I don't know those GPU's super well, but prices change a lot and when the 280x came in for example, it was ~25% more expensive here for a worse 280x than the 7970's available

Don't shit on Kingston RAM until you see precise specs. While it's true that most of their RAM kits are indeed bad 1.65v, when I built my computer I found a decent 1.5v kit which wasn't priced badly at all. If the RAM you're getting is 1600 MHz at 1.5V and it's not priced too badly, then you're good to go.

If you're going to edge out every last drop of performance out of your CPU, then getting the GA-Z87X-D3H is a good idea. However if you're really going to go for performance, you would also need a better cooler. The CM 212 is a good cooler for its price, but it's insufficient for high overclocks where you would be better off with a Noctua or something like that.

The motherboard and cooler you're getting now support overclocking well enough if you're looking to try it out. From my personal experience, I have a 4670, which can't be overclocked, yet it still does everythin I want it to, including 1080p video recording at 5k kbps bitrate (using OBS)*. So if you're overclocking for the first time, well, maybe you don't necessarily need the the last .3 - .2 GHz. It's your call.

If you stick to that motherboard, though, you can also get this case: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=18919&cPath=547

^What's good about this case:
1. It's Fractal Design, they make excellent cases, particularly at the low-end.
2. It's designed with airflow in mind which is good support for overclocking.
3. It's got its own case fans to come with it.
4. Fits your budget.

It's designed for microATX motherboards, for ATX motherboards you'd need to dish out some extra cash for the Arc Midi R2, which is also a great case.

I'm also concerned about no mention of your PSU. I browsed PC Case Gear a bit and found the selection was kind of shitty. There's the CX430 there but if you're going to overclock you're better off dishing out some more cash for a better PSU. You're better off looking yourself and then asking here what people think of your PSU. ^^

*5k quality bitrate is close to the highest possible quality you can get watching a youtube video by the way, just to give a sort of indicator. OBS is actually amazing considering how little resources it uses compared to FRAPS or something.

He should at least get a PSU with 2x 6/8pin connectors. For future GPU's sake.

Given that SC2 is CPU bound, I don't see how you get a cheaper one and do "just as good."

Because that CPU is over kill. My old i7 920 plays it on ultra, just fine. It's a matter of min-maxing with budget to get core desired traits. Cheaper CPU can still play SC2 on ultra. Leaving room for more budget on GPU, which allows for more gaming options. Still going to play SC2 on ultra, but now with extra money in GPU, you can start playing stuff like BF4 on really high settings.

By that logic you should have bought a dual-core i5 instead of your i7 when you did.

Tbh I'm still regretting getting the 920. I could jave gotten the quad core i5's. Hyperthreading was such an expensive extra feature upon getting the 920. That's why I advocate for more money spent on gpu. :/

I would really like to show you the kind of performance differences we can be talking about, if you want to pm me and hop on eu for shared replay sometime

In your case - quad core i5 would have absolutely been a better buy, but in his - if we get less than i5, you're talking about dual core haswell, which isn't too capable these days for most tasks.. or FX, which is terrible for sc2.

On launches, stock of old cards are almost always the better values.

R9 270X has a higher base memory clock, a little more advanced clocks / power / temp management (higher peak clock available), and a different video output ports configuration. I think it also gets the 3-monitor no-DP on certain configurations feature as well...? Not sure.

I think that's the difference.

VRAM isn't additive and neither is memory bus.

I find it weird that something that simple is being reported wrong? Unless it's because both chipsets are on the same PCB, so VRAM and stuff might be able to be connected in a way that it's additive, unlike true SLI. Maybe that would also fix the inconviences of going for dual mid-end GPUs instead of one powerful GPU (thinking of micro stuttering especially, the card should still be power hungry). yes, i read this idea on oc.net but no one answered the guy

Edit: Actually come to think of it, there are versions of the 770 with 4 Gb of VRAM. Maybe they'll do the same thing with this card. Memory bus would still be 256 bit right? If priced right this card could be interesting.

The problem is taking a specs table from an unofficial source / rumors seriously. There could be 4 GB of VRAM per GPU, but it's most likely 2 GB of VRAM per GPU (which has a 256-bit memory bus each).

2304 cuda cores on a pair of dies @1.2v would use way less power than 2880 cuda cores on a single die running @1.3v (air 780ti) so it's not a fatal flaw or anything. SLI is actually pretty decent, just not ideal, and i wouldn't want it with 2gb of VRAM

Thanks everyone for the help, learning a lot from this thread

regarding the psu, I currently have an antec earthwatts 650w that I bought a few years back. I assumed it would be sufficient for this build. Also I'm leaning the Lian Li First Knight case.
I've did some light reading on the 7870 and it seems to compete/ is better than the gtx660 at stock, not sure what the difference is like after overclocking though. I'm also not too sure what powercolor is like, is there generally not much difference between them and the bigger name vendors?

@incognoto lol the selection available in Australia is pretty limited for everything

The cooler on the GPU will cool the VRM's. They are next to the 6/8 pin power connectors (they take the 12v from there and cut it down to gpu volts, ~0.9-1.4v, and memory volts ~1.6v?)

Earthwatts is fine.

Powercolor is another one of those Taiwanese companies (that's not that big). They do AMD graphics cards often with pretty reference or fairly standard board and cooler designs. Nothing too special. Some models are better than others, but they're never the best at anything except sometimes lower cost. I have no idea what their service / RMA process is like for AUS.

If you care about noise levels or overclocking a lot, you probably want something else.

The voltage regulation modules on the graphics card PCB take in the +12V from the power connectors and do step-down DC-DC power conversion to the voltage the GPU chip itself uses to run (e.g. 1.2 V). There's a separate one and a different voltage for the video RAM. It's similar to what you see on motherboards for the CPU and main system memory.

The process is lossy; wasted power becomes heat. The switching transistors in the VRMs get hot and need some cooling. In graphics cards the hot components of the VRMs sit under some heatsink that hopefully gets some indirect airflow from the fan. If a graphics card uses 200W, about say... 10-20W of it might be in losses in the VRMs (general ballpark or so)? It really depends on their configuration and design, components used.

So all of them have one.

So, with Black Friday coming up and my computer running out of steam, I am looking to try and build my own computer for the first time ever, I was directed to this thread for help. So far, just the first page is very informative on understanding what the name of parts mean. However, I am still lost as of where do you stop getting bangs for your bucks. I see motherboards with roughly the same power but the cost range can go to 500$. So here is the form.

What is your budget?
<1500$

What is your monitor's native resolution?
I will buy a 1920 x 1080. no bigger than 24inches

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
I am looking forward to EQ Next and hoping to run it at its best if possible; maybe another MMO until so.
Beside that, upcoming Dragon Age.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Beside gaming, any normal use.

Do you intend to overclock?
Mayyyyyybe if I am comfortable with how to do that.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
Depends, how better is it to have 2 cheap video cards vs 1 powerful one? Do any game use or plan to use this feature to it's fullest??

Do you need an operating system?
I have a laptop that came with Win8, can I use the recovery drive? If not, yeah.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
I'll buy a monitor and new speakers on Black Friday, that is aside from the budget.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
No.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
Living in Quebec, Canada, buying from Canada will lower most costs.

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
No.

EDIT: If the sample builds are already accurate, any tips on what to look for with current days prices? What to upgrade first or what not to invest too much in.

Regarding a monitor, if i hook it up to my gpu using dvi port, there will be no sound correct?
but if i hook it up with an HDMI there will be sounds? (assuming the monitor has built in speakers of course)

however, people say the built in audio is crap and you should buy a speaker set, even a $20 one.

if that is true, whats the point of an HDMI in existence if DVI does what HDMI does without sound and your going to buy a pair of speakers anyways?

Thx

My dad is looking to get my step-mom an android tablet for Christmas and looking for the best deal possible. He's willing to order online, but it has to ship to Canada. Local costco and wal-mart at $377 for the "samsung tablet 10" (+ Show Spoiler +
not sure which model he is referring to exactly. Galaxy Tab 2/3 10.1"?
). He aid he found the black friday price at $219, but that's only an American deal. Any recommendations or places to check out I should let him know of?

My step-mom has a Galaxy S III phone which she loves dearly, she's pretty much been wanting the same thing but bigger for use at home. So preferably Samsung and looking at a 10.1" model that is available in Canada.
