Yeah, you and your unlimited free time. I wish I... uhm.
Just kidding. Although I am expecting to use D3 as a tool to pick up some extra money on the side once it's out, while I'm keeping my kid in check.

So, I am looking to upgrade- currently I use a dell xps laptop, works ok for starcraft but hit a bit of lag from time to time.
Budget: somewhat open but would like to be in the 700-1000 Resolution: I need new monitor anyways, but usally have it set at 1920x1080, not big deal to me Use: Mostly gaming (sc2, skyrim, , small amount of photo editing (adobe lightroom, low tech stuff) Upgrade cycle: >2+ years ideally Timing of build: Any time, I dont need one now, so if waiting for the next chipset cycle was smart I could wait a few months Overclocking: No OS:doesn't need to be in budget Second GPU: doubtful Locations: Online mostly, Fry's is around but a ways off.
I also would be open to prebuilt- I dont plan on doing any streaming, video editing or anything fancy.... and im lazy
Thanks!

Well we arent gonna suggest a prebuilt if you can build one, that would be silly.
We are in the middle of transitioning into new technology, then again when aren't we. How badly do you need a new computer?

Hihi! I was hoping all the tech-savy nerd-ballers in here could help me out in building a new comp.
What is your budget? 1000$-1400$
What is your resolution? 1280x1024
What are you using it for? Most likely gaming. I do want to record and stream too.
What is your upgrade cycle? 2-3 years
When do you plan on building it? In about a week or two.
Do you plan on overclocking? Sure. :D
Do you need an Operating System? Yeah. :\
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No.
Where are you buying your parts from? Frys/Microcenter/Online(US)
|
You should strongly consider using part of your budget to upgrade your monitor. Setting aside $300-400 for that and $900-1000 max for the desktop is a good idea. What do you think? Read TL's monitor thread for information: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=308280
I'll probably put a build together for you for $1000 or less (sans monitor), a build that assumes a 1920x1080 or 1900x1200 monitor upgrade (otherwise a mid-range GPU like a ~$110 HD 6770 would serve 1280x1024 perfectly) . It would be best for you to decide beforehand if you want something like 120Hz monitor, though.
EDIT: Here's a build for $1088 before some mail-in-rebates. If you live close to MicroCenter, go there and get a 2500K + P67/Z68 mobo combo to get their discounts.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/5g0W Look at the top right, click "price breakdown by merchant" - you can have a single order from newegg with pretty much the best prices all around. If you're OK with multiple orders, you could save $20 by getting a Crucial M4 from B&H instead of the Samsung 830 from Newegg: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/768798-REG/Crucial_Technology_CT064M4SSD2_64GB_m4_SSD_2_5_.html
Since you said that you're planning to "record" your gaming (which I assume means using FRAPS) and not just live-stream (such as by using XSplit), then I put in a SSD + 7200 RPM HDD for extra programs/recording/space.
If you're not upgrading the monitor, this GTX 460 graphics card would be more appropriate for that resolution: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125412&Tpk=N82E16814125412

Hi,
i guess if you guys can help me with build a PC. I've made a pre-build but i'm afraid i may overprice too much.
What is your budget? It's around 1000-1200$ but i'm quite flexible in this matter. Note that prices in Poland can be different (but you probably know that already ) and i'm looking rather for best performance/price ratio (with emphasis on performance)
What is your resolution? 1980x1080
What are you using it for? Mosty gaming but i also want to be able to run many applications in background (like application server, database, etc.) and still have good performance. No photoshop, no streaming.
What is your upgrade cycle? around 2 years, but i'm willing to buy something cheaper to replace it in few months (and fit with budget today)
When do you plan on building it? In 1-2 weeks.
Do you plan on overclocking? No plans for overclocking.
Do you need an Operating System? No
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Until it's cost-effecting and in my budget - no.
Where are you buying your parts from? As I mentioned I'm from Poland and I'm going to buy parts in local stores.
So my pre build is Intel Core i7 2600 3,40 GHz BOX (i've read here that i must be rich to buy it, it costs ~400$ here, i would buy something cheaper if it had similar performance, i don't want to save on this one)
Gigabyte GA-P67A-D3-B3 G.SKILL DDR3 2x 2GB 1866MHz CL9 Ripjaws I have no idea how cost-effective these two are
I also want 2x HDD in RAID 0
Any help will be appreciated. Cheers

I have no idea what graphic card i should pick, I don't even know where and how to start
Case, power supply are like no problem i think. I'm not overclocking so i don't need "pimped" case, power supply will be picked last when i know how much power i need. Everything else i will just get from my old pc for now (not like there is many else).
I picked P67 motherboard because H67 doesn't support 1600MHz memory (at least models I saw, maybe i'm wrong). Thanks for links, they will help me with picking memory immensely.
I will look into SSD but they are so expensive and small. And I heard that RAID 0 is good speed-up when starting windows/programs is concerned. EDIT: Maybe SSD is not that bad idea, thanks for pointing that out!

EDIT: Maybe SSD is not that bad idea, thanks for pointing that out! It depends on the program; RAID 0 can help, but it doesn't improve access times. Loading programs and OSes often requires reading a whole lot of small files scattered around.
For most practical use, an SSD would be a much larger improvement than hard disks in RAID 0. RAID 0 is most useful for dumping raw or lightly-compressed video data, or something like that, that involves a huge time-intensive sequential data transfer.

For graphics card, you can take a look at Radeon HD6870, Radeon HD6950, GTX 560 Ti, or GTX 560 Ti 448. If you want to spend much more, you can go for a 7950 or 7970. You can see various cards compared in articles such as these: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5476/amd-radeon-7950-review/12 Note that GTX 560 Ti and 6950 are comparable in performance, 6870 falls between a 5850 and 5870 in performance, and GTX 560 Ti 448 is slightly worse than a GTX 570.
The gains in getting better memory is very small. Getting a P67 board solely for better memory would be stupid as a bigger performance gain can be had by getting a K suffix processor (2600k) and overclocking it.

This question must have been asked before, but I'm overclocking my 2500k and I'm looking for a pretty light overclock. Anyways I'm looking as to what would some good settings for it be!
I put the voltage at 1.27 and my multiplier to 40x. And my temperatures are at 65-67C under-stress. I have an ASUS Z68 mobo for $130~. I'm just wondering where I should go from here. Not looking for anything extreme. Thank you.
And I'm using the 212+ fan for reference.
|
You can run a stress test or have faith that it works. Thats about it.
I set my multiplier to 40, I didnt change the voltage any but I think its set to auto so Im covered.
65C is pretty close to what I get. Closer to 62C when I stream and play SC2 at the same time, but only if its warm in my room as well.
I have the same processor and same fan. Pretty good huh? To some processors, particularly awhile ago, this would have been an EXTREME OC but not for sandy bridge.
|
Just set vcore to auto and multiplier to somewhere in the 42-44 range. You can play around with offset voltage if you want to achieve a higher clock or lower voltage.

Hmm I was watching an overclocking video and it said to turn off a lot of different settings? Should I enable those? And alright, I'll try auto, but what kind of temperatures should I be limits myself to for my uses?
I'm also curious as to what programs I want to be using to see my temps etc. Right now I'm using Speedfan.
|
People recommend disabling power saving features such as C1E and EIST but you can leave those on if you wish as well.
You should aim for something under 60c during load ideally, under 70c works as well.
Speedfan sucks. Use HW Monitor.

Okay just downloaded it. So right now I'm not doing anything but installing Battlefield 3. And I'm wondering, which temperatures should I be worried about here when I'm overclocking?

And thank you thank you so much ^__^
