I have no doubt I can put the parts together with the right guidance. I have an idea of what I'm looking for, but not entirely sure of how much this will cost me. Would you all mind pointing me in the right direction? If it is easier, maybe you can suggest what price range I would need to be looking at to meet my needs then I can post again with a little more specific answer in that regard. What is your budget? I'm thinking anywhere from $500 - $700 for the rig and $150-$200 for the monitor? Again, I don't feel I know enough to judge the price range required for what I want to use this for (see below). What is your resolution? I will need a new monitor so this is highly dependent on what is recommended in that regard. I'm thinking something in the range of 21-23 inches, but I'm not sure what resolution I would need. I don't need top-of-the-line but would like something of decent quality. What are you using it for? Gaming and other entertainment purposes. I'm a tax CPA at a big firm so my work laptop is separate. Also, my wife will use this to keep alot of pictures so some additional storage space may be appropriate. Specific games I want the PC to run: Diablo III, Witcher 2, Deus Ex: HR, Borderlands 2, Skyrim, and Battlefield 3 as examples. What is your upgrade cycle? I would think on the longer end like 2-3 years. I'm not all that concerned with being cutting edge. I generally don't buy games right as they come out and I don't need to run everything on max setting. I would like to be able to run most games within the top 25% range. When do you plan on building it? Sometime within the next 6 months. My dad is selling his house and will be giving me a huge, solid oak computer desk/work desk so I won't have a place to put the computer until I have that. Do you plan on overclocking? I don't think I have enough computer knowledge for this... Do you need an Operating System? I have vista home edition to install. Should I pay for Windows 7? I can probably get a student deal through my brother who is still in school. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I don't know what this means so I'm thinking no. Where are you buying your parts from? I am in Milwaukee, WI area of the US, so I have access to newegg. I've had alot of success with finding deals on there and their shipping and return polities seem top notch so I will probably go with them. Thank you all so much for your assistance!

edit: Ok apparently x16/x4 is like a 5ish% decrease below x16/x16 so definitely worth it for actual thermal headroom for OCing? The cards would literally be stuck together sandwich style otherwise.

Then you have $50 worth of rebates to deal with. Total, without a case, comes to $525. Assuming your case budget is $100, here is a better list of better cases: Lancool K58 (with window) - $50 Lancool K58 (no window) - $60 Silverstone TJ08-E - $100 Lian Li A05N Black - $90 Lian Li A05N Silver - $80 Antec 300 Illusion - $45 with promo code Personal favourite is the Lian Li K58. Built fairly well and has nice useful features.

I suppose its the same with the LIAN LI PC-A05NA vs the LIAN LI PC-A05NB. They're basically the same case but the silver is probably cheaper because Newegg can't sell them as fast as the black ones. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Yes but the windowed version is normally $20 more than the non-windowed version - I think most people would take the non-windowed version and pocket the $20. As I said, it seems like a situation where the business (Newegg) wants to sell slow moving stock that is costing them warehouse space.

So my laptop just broke down after 3 1/2 years of service, just in time to prevent me from participating in our local SC2 tourney :-(. Now I'm in desperate need of a new computer and I decided to get a desktop machine to serve me as well as my good old Dell XPS, if not better. What is your budget? Around 500€ i.e. less than 700$. I'd like to save as many a buck as I can though. It's just that I want to use the computer for as long as possible and do not want to sacrifice longevity and reliability for cost. What is your resolution? I will need to buy a monitor as well but it won't be high end, ~100€, 21'' or something like that, maybe even smaller. I'm used to playing on 14.4'' at 1280x1024, so I'm not that demanding. I guess 1620x1280 (those are the numbers, right?) should be enough. If you guys have any suggestions for monitors as well I will gladly take those, too :-) What are you using it for? Some gaming, mainly Starcraft, but I do not need ultra high settings for the newest games. It would be nice if my Total War games looked pretty for once though (or just ran properly at all) :-). Other than that I use digital music studio software for music production and audio editing, but not extensively. I would also like to do some recording but I will most likely use an external sound card for that. It would also be nice if the rig was quiet and cool (as in cold) just for convenience sake when watching movies etc. and just for my general well-being :-) What is your upgrade cycle? Loooooooong. As long as possible actually. I used my laptop which just broke down for about 3 1/2 years and could barely play SC recently. I would expect a proper desktop computer to top that easily even if it won't be able to play high end games by the end of it's lifespan. When do you plan on building it? As soon as possible. My laptop just broke down and now I do not have a proper computer. I would probably order the parts right next week or something. Do you plan on overclocking? No Do you need an Operating System? No. I use Win7. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No, except if there is a solution with a very good cost/utility ratio, but it sounds kind of like overkill. Where are you buying your parts from? I live in Germany so I would most likely order from some European online retailer. I would just go for the cheapest. I usually order parts from conrad.de, but I don't know how it compares to other shops. I will need to build this thing from scratch so I will need a case as well. I don't care for looks that much, a modest design is enough for me as long as it's quiet. As far as assembling goes, I've dine that before, so it should not be too much of a problem. This thread is really great by the way, you guys are awesome! Thank you so much for all the help, not just for me, but for everyone else as well!

Here is like the exact same build but with a higher capacity hard drive, better GPU, a free Deus Ex game coupon, and probably better motherboard. Perhaps even cheaper too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313123 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157233 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115073 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150551 Memory has a $10 Promo code and processor has $15 Promo code. ~$500-700 Less is better..... Already have a monitor, power supply(corsair 800W), Win7 64bit and a good keyboard/mouse. What is your resolution? 1680x1050, may upgrade in the future.. What are you using it for? Mostly gaming, some ProEngineer/Solidworks. SC2, looking forward to BF3, Skyrim and CSGO. Really want high fps, with medium/high graphics. What is your upgrade cycle? 2-3+ Years, I've had my current pc for about 4. When do you plan on building it? Within a month or so. Can buy parts within a week or so. Do you plan on overclocking? Minor overclocking as needed for satisfactory performance. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Possibly. I was looking at running dual GTX 460 Hawk's SLI off the bat. Would these run well on an 800W PSU? Based on reviews, at $100 a piece(NCIX) it seems hard to beat for performance/price... Yes, no? Where are you buying your parts from? What is your budget? Wherever they're cheap. USA Buyer.

What is your budget? I would like to keep it under $1500. If this isn't possible, that's understandable...just my goal. What is your resolution? I currently play at 1600x900, but it doesn't really matter because I need a monitor. I am tired of this tiny minimap. What are you using it for? I literally only play games and watch netflix. I want to be able to run sc2, diablo2, dota2 very well. What is your upgrade cycle? Since I don't know much about computers, I don't plan to upgrade very much. When do you plan on building it? I would really like to build it within a month or so. Do you plan on overclocking? Doubt it, don't know enough about it. Do you need an Operating System? Yes. I use win7 atm and I like it. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Hadn't decided...I will see what you guys think... Where are you buying your parts from? I typically use newegg. Thanks ahead of time for your input. Hopefully I can afford a good computer, idk how much one runs from scratch yet--never done it before.
