I'd suspect a freebie PSU to suck if it's some brand you've never heard of, but that's not necessarily the situation. edit: if you can't really get all that info, it may just be worth blindly replacing the power supply, though it could be something else. Is the computer set to auto-reboot? What do system logs say? I ended up replacing the power supply and it's working perfectly now. All the things that made it crash before are working just fine, thanks. ![]()

You guys chose my build for my computer and for the last 2 monthes it has been working wonders! Now my friend would like to build a computer after seeing mine complete. He didn't specify a price range so if you could maybe provide a $800 build and a $1000 build that'd be pretty awesome . Things he has: Monitor, keyboard, mouse, He needs: operating system

Hmm, is there a case in the $100 range by CoolerMaster with some nice led fans? He's not so techy so aesthetics will probably mean quite alot to him.

I’d like to get some feedback on sound cards. Currently I have a Razer AC-1 and I mostly use it with my headset a Corsair HS1A. I’ve honestly never owned any other soundcard beside onboard so I don’t really know if an upgrade will help at all. My quick appraisal is the Razer card is built more for 1st person shooters (which I don’t do—I play SC2 and that’s really it) and to be used with their proprietary headset. Also, I think the software that comes with it is built poorly at least for my purposes. The EQ is pretty non-effective and I’d like to push a bit more bass. I don’t really care about 7.1 since I mostly use my headset but that looks like the big deal for most cards. Honestly, I’m a two channel guy that dabbled in audiophilla for many years. And my thing is I care how music sounds. If the music sounds good, then so will dialogue in a movie in my opinion. So, given that, I was curious to see if anyone had any recommendations as to brands/models and general tips for picking out a good card. Also, besides SC2, I do a lot of listening to music while I type. As I said before, the base is an issue. If the card doesn’t fix it, I’ll probably get a higher grade headset. Here’s my current system in case anyone’s curious: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ag9Zm14lsOGmdFVlOEZaYlNGLUFCdWlTbGRfUnAzUlE&hl=en_US&authkey=CJGg7soE

If you're EQing, good practice to avoid clipping is just to lower the other frequencies, rather than push anything higher. But you could try increasing the bass and lowering everything else a lot, and then increasing the overall volume to compensate. That's not going to fix bass that is muddy or otherwise lacks control or has high distortion though. Cheap bass-heavy headphones are like the Sony XB500, XB700. Something a little more hi-fi, sturdy and comfortable and with plenty of bass, especially sub-bass, is the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 (around $180).

Storm Scout, Storm Enforcer, 690ii Advanced, and HAF 922. Antec Nine Hundred Two V3 is also another option: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129097

All in all it is the biggest weakness/limitation in/of the HS1A--though for their price point I highly recommend them. They were bought not as audiophile grade but really for gaming and VOIP.You're looking to upgrade your headset/headphones, not the sound card. I'm still thinking about sound cards though and here's why. I just don't trust the AC-1. Mostly because the software doesn't help me accomplish my goals and also because the software has never been updated. So, I guess my question is are all sound cards the same? If not, what can I expect/look for in a better sound card? My guess is that it's just like a home preamp. The quality of the preamp headphone output matters but since it doesn't take nearly as much to power headphones, I'm not sure if there's a discernible difference at least not in the under $200 range.

Well there's always dropping a level on CPU or GPU. Other forumers probably have better ideas, but I don't think you need an aftermarket heatsink if you're not overclocking, so you can drop the 212+. You can definitely get a ~$30 copy of windows if you have an .edu address. You can drop to a lower priced case. You can get a less expensive power supply. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371034 is one I looked up quickly. You may be able to get one that goes lower with mail in rebate or that I didn't notice in a super-quick check.

I would remove the Hyper 212+ (doesn't seem like you're going for a low noise build--though there are better choices for that--and you're not overclocking, so no need for an aftermarket fan). If you're getting a cheaper power supply, a reasonable one for $40 is the Rosewill Green Series 430W: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182202 Next step down for the GPU would be a HD 6850, for $150: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161384

I like the power supply that myrmidon suggested, but would 430w be enough? Myrm is one of our top posters and an electrical engineer. He's usually right about PSUs. If you want to doublecheck, use the PSU calculator at extreme.outervision.com and plug in the build.
