-Change the cpu and motherboard to i5-3570k and a z77 mobo and save ~200$
-The powersupply is from ~5 years back, so unless you are using it from a previous build, you might want to buy a newer model.
-do you really need 16gb of ram?

There was a B65 back in the day, but 6 series also had H61 to be the low-cost platform. Now the mobo manufacturers are just appropriating B75 for that task, since there's no H71 I guess. As skyR said, nothing most people would care about other than the SATA port

Objective: Build a computer that will run 4v4 and silly things like Fastest Possible Map on Ultra. What is your budget? This might be frustrating to you - I don't have one; I can spend whatever it takes to meet my goal, but I don't want to pay a penny extra. What is your resolution? I have two 1600 x 1050 (720p) DVI monitors I'd like the PC to support. I want it to be able to run something at 1080p though in case I buy a nicer monitor down the road. What are you using it for? Starcraft, similar RTS-style games, light Matlab, office work. What is your upgrade cycle? This concept seems silly to me; it is hard to predict the future (especially when you're clueless like I am). When do you plan on building it? Between Black Friday and Christmas sounds like a good time. Do you plan on overclocking? Nope. Do you need an Operating System? Fortunately no. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Not a chance. Where are you buying your parts from? I'm a USA customer, near a Microcenter, but willing to cobble stuff together from anywhere. Thanks so much for your input!

Just a couple of notes for you to respond to. First, are you sure about not overclocking? SC2 is a CPU-bound game. Basically, the more units the slower it runs. Ultra graphics is easy as pie - it's the smooth 4v4s that are hard. Overclocking will help with 4v4 super-late-game. Also, do you play any other graphically intensive games? This question is tied to the "spend no more than you have to" directive. You can play SC2 on ultra with a cheap $80 GPU. But many other games will not run well on that. So some direction is desired (e.g. "great, I didn't realize I could get away with a cheap GPU" or "oh, I didn't realize SC2 was easy to run graphically compared to other games. I also want other games I might pick up later to look pretty").

Regarding your first question, I am willing to overclock (assuming my impression that I can do it in ten minutes by following some "overclocking for dummies" article is correct). The reason I said no earlier is that from what I have gathered from lurking in reddit/r/buildapc, overclocking requires a nicer mobo chipset, better cooler, extra $$$ for unlocked processor. From my (uneducated) perspective, it doesn't seem like it is a good price/performance ratio when all subsidiary costs are thrown in. However I know that I could be completely wrong on this point, so my real answer to the question is that I would definitely overclock if it made sense cost-wise. Second question - I don't currently own any other games that would be more intensive than SC2. I've never been interested in shooters or RPGs; so if/when I buy games in the future they'll probably be turn-based or RTS again. I know that if I buy an RTS game two years from now my PC will not run it at max settings - I would want it to be playable though.

So here's a recommended parts list, focusing on functional but cheap - no luxuries like sound-dampening cases or whatnot. CPU (option a) - i5-3750k ($170 @ Microcenter) Mobo (option a) - Gigabyte z77-ds3h ($60-$110 @ Microcenter, I think this is a -$50 in-store deal) CPU cooler (option a) - Coolermaster 212+ ($20) http://www.microcenter.com/product/388577/Core_i5_3570K_34GHz_LGA_1155_Processor http://www.microcenter.com/product/388327/GA-Z77-DS3H_LGA_1155_Z77_ATX_Intel_Motherboard http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=41337&vpn=RR-B10-212P-G1&manufacture=COOLERMASTER&promoid=1296 CPU (option b) - i5-3450 ($140 @ Microcenter) I'm assuming here matlab can benefit from 4 cores. Otherwise an i3-3220 would be fine. Mobo (option b) - Asus B75 ($65, if you can get -$50 on a cheap B75 or H77 mobo in Microcentet, that works too) http://www.microcenter.com/product/388579/Core_i5_3450_31GHz_LGA_1155_Processor http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=71808&vpn=P8B75-M LE&manufacture=ASUS&promoid=1296 Ram - Geil 2x4gb 1333mhz ($30 after promo code) Video Card - MSI 7770 ($130, $100 after rebate) Case - Bit Fenix Merc Alpha ($37) PSU - Antec Neo Eco 450c ($37) HDD - Seagate 500gb 7200rpm ($55, double the size is available for $70) SSD - this luxury removed in favor of cost-control DVD-burner - ($15) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144543&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=4003003&SID=r4i85d46nrab http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127664 http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63256&vpn=BFC-MRC-100-KKX1-RP&manufacture=BitFenix http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=60491&vpn=NEO-ECO450C&manufacture=Antec http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63468&vpn=ST500DM002&manufacture=Seagate&promoid=1296 http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=49597&vpn=DRW-24B1ST Bulk&manufacture=ASUS&promoid=1296 Tower, overclocking option: $554 (-$30 rebate, +sales tax) Tower, non-overclocking option: $509 (-$30 rebate, +sales tax) You could go a tad cheaper on GPU. But if you take the rebate into account, this is a very good option for maxing graphics for SC2 while still retaining a bit of extra power for future games you might play.
