No. It's really just externals for most people.

1. I want to be able to run Starcraft 2 at Extreme graphics without lagging. 2. I want to play Team Fortress 2 at medium-ish settings, since I don't think $700 is enough to build a computer that maxes out on TF2. 3. I want a large enough monitor to get a big table when playing Magic Online. I currently have a 1280x1024 monitor, and I'm thinking of going as high as I can without breaking the bank. I prefer Intel over AMD, but I am not that picky. I guess I should answer the questionnaire: What is your budget? $800. What is your resolution? My current resolution is 1280x1024, and I want to go higher than that without breaking the bank. What are you using it for? Mostly gaming, with some dabbling in computer programming as a hobby. What is your upgrade cycle? I bought my computer in 2005, and I upgraded it in 2009. It's 2012, and I'm going to buy a new computer from scratch, so my upgrade cycle is around 4 years. When do you plan on building it? ASAP. I have $800 burning a whole in my wallet. Do you plan on overclocking? No, I want my computer to last, and overclocking shortens the lifespan of a computer, or so I've been told. Do you need an Operating System? Yes. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No. Not for my budget, nor for the foreseeable future. Where are you buying your parts from? Newegg!

I have no idea about cheap monitors these days, so maybe you want something better than that. There's a little bit of room under $800 with the above, to upgrade one thing or two.

I'm looking forward to playing D3 this May (as are many of you, I imagine) but I still need to buy me a decent graphics card. I'm not much of gamer these days and I'm pretty sure that D3 will probably be the last title I play with any degree of commitment so there isn't much need for future proofing here but it would be nice to have a decent frame rate coupled with good looks. As of now I'm thinking of getting GTX 460 or GTX 550 Ti. The former is a time-honored choice and the proverbial "best bang" but the latter is a little more accommodating in terms of price. These two should give you a general idea of my budget. My display operates at 1680x1050 so I think either of the two should do fine. Have any of you had any experience running beta with these GPUs? Is GTX 460 worth the extra cash here? Are there any better options? The idea is to get the best possible efficiency without going over the top. Also, has anyone tried playing beta on i3/i5 graphics core alone? Will it run? Will it be playable? I know Starcraft 2 is and with everything turned to low it gives you something like 40 FPS. Not much and it looks ugly but it can be played. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Great advice from Myrmidon above as well. I agree with him about the lack of PSU deals right now. The antec he listed may be a better choice, as some few of the Corsairs I listed sometimes develop coil whine. Note the antec will require a spare power cord as it doesn't come with one (these are dirt cheap if you don't have one). Also, I split my order between 2 websites, his is all on newegg, which might be more convenient. The monitor makes things a bit complicated. You can get a very nice 23" monitor like an Ultrasharp 2312HM from Dell for $240. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&sku=320-2807 Or you can go in the other direction & get some random $150 1920x1080 monitor that looks good in a store or something. (Or the nice monitor special posted above by Myrmidon). TF2 and SC2 both use only 2 cores, so a dual core CPU to save some money. A quad core would be roughly $75 more. CPU - i3-2100 ($110 w/ promo code EMCNGHC43) + DVD on combo special ($11) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115078 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.846156 Assuming the promo code will work with the combo... Mobo - Asrock Cheapo ($55) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157241 Has 2 controllable fan headers unlike the 1 controllable fan headers on the $5 cheaper boards. Video Card - Both of these are far more powerful than SC2 needs - I'm not totally up on TF2 graphics requirements, but they should allow at least medium, probably high or even maximum settings in TF2. Option #1 (more powerful video card, cheapo monitor) - 6870 ($160) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102986 Option #2 (moderate power video card, good Dell monitor - I recommend this route) - 460 ($118 AMIR) The 460 should have roughly equivalent power to the 6850 recommended by Myrmidon above. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127646 Case - Bit Fenix Merc Alpha ($35) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63256&vpn=BFC-MRC-100-KKX1-RP&manufacture=BitFenix&promoid=1363 The Haf 912 at the same website is another often recommended budget case ($50) PSU - Corsair cx430v2 ($37 AMIR) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026 If you don't want to deal with power adapters for the video card, you can get the 500w version of the same line for $43 AMIR with a promo code. HDD - 500GB 7200rpm drive ($75) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63468&vpn=ST500DM002&manufacture=Seagate&promoid=1263 You can get the 1TB version for $98 if you want more space. RAM - Pareema 2x4gb 1333mhz RAM ($35) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820576006 You can get 2x2gb if you want to save a few dollars. Oops. Forgot windows, thanks Myrmidon!: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM - $80 (promo code EMCYTZT1382) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986 If you're a student, you might be able to get a free or cheap copy of windows through your school. Total w/Dell monitor & 460: $796 after mail-in rebates That doesn't leave you much wiggle room if you like the looks of the haf 912 over the merc alpha, want a bigger HDD, etc. Also, it goes significantly over budget not taking rebates into account. Shipping costs are added into prices in parentheses. I'm also assuming you have peripherals like mouse, headphones/speakers, keyboard, etc.

A GTX 460 is only $140 while a GTX 550 Ti isn't a very good choice since it's pricing is terrible. It offers similar performance to a Radeon HD6770 yet it's priced at the level of a 6790. A GTX 460 can play D3 beta on max settings at 1080p. It's requirements will be pretty much similar to Starcraft II.

1100-1300 What is your resolution? Using two monitors: Dell U2711W and a BenQ 1080P Monitor. Resolutions: 2560x1440 and 1920x1080 What are you using it for? Mostly Gaming, I don't play FPSs much but I play almost everything else, I photoshop every so often as well. Just to note with my current GPU I can play everything on max with stuff like AA at 2 or 4x. What is your upgrade cycle? Every 2-3 years, I still seem to buy parts every so often along the way. When do you plan on building it? I plan on having an Ivy Bridge build, I have seen numerious sandy bridge and mobo combos but I prefer Ivy Bridge for the better power consumption. Do you plan on overclocking? Usually towards year 2 or 3 of it, if it doesn't hurt the CPU then I can immediately do it, bear in mind I will proly buy a good cooler right off the bat and install it. Do you need an Operating System? No. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Depends, my options are something like: 6950 Crossfire 7970 (Once price drops cuz of GTX 680) GTX 680 I have a $575 budget on GPU, I have already bought a 6950 with warrenty for about 275 I could proly sell it 225 and buy a 7970/680 or just buy a 6950. Depends whether xfire/powerful single card I heard xfire sometimes has driver issues. Where are you buying your parts from? I plan to use MemoryExpress to price match every other store in Canada and have them build it as well. Current Setup: i5-750 OC to 3.4 Ghz 8GB Ram 1333 Sapphire 6950 2GB 650 Antec Power Supply 128 GB Crucial M4 SSD (Bought on a sale for new build) 1 TB Backup data drive. Dell U2711, Benq 1080P monitor. What is a recomended build, I assume most components will be fresh except the SSD and GPU, which Ivy Bridge processor should I get, something along the lines of i5-2500k or i5-2600k would be good, which cooler to get 4-5 Ghz OC? And biggest question GPU choice, I want this to last long term, look above for options, bear in mind I have 0 trouble playing anything at 1440p, I don't get silky smooth 60fps but I wouldn't mind turning more up. Thanks!

Thanks! You can re-use your power supply as well since you overkilled on it and it's probably a Truepower New or Earthwatts which are both good models. Your memory can also be re-used since Ivybridge still uses DDR3. Your case can also be re-used, I assume it's something decent. Your heatsink can be re-used, I assume it's decent as well. For Ivybridge, I guess you're looking at a 3570k or 3770k depending on whether you want hyperthreading or not. Though I would just stick with your Lynnfield and wait for Haswell before upgrading. Radeon HD7970 won't drop in pricing anytime soon but people can keep dreaming I guess. 6950s aren't a good option at all, I don't know why you bought it for $275 since that's overpriced.. 7850s are a better choice.

My budget cap is around $800. I'm planning on using this computer solely for gaming and schoolwork. I would possibly need to get a Windows 7, though I might have a spare one somewhere. I don't plan on overclocking. Thanks
