I created a thread about a week ago asking what type of laptop should a person get if they want to play sc2 on ultra or at least high settings without any lag/crash/stutter problems, i got mixed reply's suggesting different laptops and a bunch was just your usual "go for a desktop, they're cheaper anyways, etc. . ." I want to get a laptop because of portability so a desktop is out of the question, i didn't really get a lot out of the last thread so I'm going to try my luck on this one.

All i need you guys to do is post your rig, make sure you post RAM, CPU, & VIDEOCARD, for your laptops and please include resolution because this is an important factor as well, and also the highest settings you can play at.

I'm going to gather up all the information and post the best laptop for the money depending on what settings you would prefer, of course everybody wants to play on ultra but if you just don't have that type of money than wouldn't you rather get one that can at least play the game?

If there's already a thread like than i am sorry to waste your time but if not then i think this is a good idea for people who would rather have portability than power.

4GB DDR3 RAM
2.53GHz C2D
Intel 9400M Graphics

I can play at medium & full resolution, but usually stick it at low to keep my laptop cooler; can't notice the difference anyways.

Also, I'm at 1440x900 and have a 5400rpm HDD.

You only notice the difference between medium, high, and ultra on large screenbs. On a regular 15" laptop screen, the difference between settings is negligible. My laptop runs medium, and I could run on high, but as I said, the only difference between the two is a performance drop.

Core i5 dual core @ 2.4 ghz

i run at medium with no lag at all. I can run ultra to but it lags in big battles.

4GB DDR3 Ram
2.4GHz core duo
nvidia Geforce 9600Gt
windows 7 64bit
1280x800
7200rpm hd

only downfall your laptop will run hot so watch your lap. maybe buy a laptop cooler fan pad? it will make a little difference.

so you said it yourself " i think this is a good idea for people who would rather have portability than power."

portability or power. Buying a laptop with the goal of "being able to play on ultra in sc2" is ridiculous

I'd agree with this. The big jump by far is from Low to Medium, and for Medium you shouldn't have any real problem finding a modern laptop that can handle it. My 3 year old Macbook Pro (2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 8600M GT) can handle Medium at 1152x720, in the Mac client which is reputedly slower. Pretty much any new laptop that isn't a low end piece of trash without a real video card should handle Medium with no problems and probably High.

for a laptop you wil need a pretty highpowered pc gaming computer for ultra but otherwise as long as you have the recommended specs from blizzard in every category you will run on medium with no lag or frame-rate drop.

I have a 15" inch macbook pro. it is not ideal for sc2 and i can only run on medium-low, but obviously this computer wasnt purchased for gaming but it does the job with no difficulty whatsoever. not to turn this into pc or mac debate but pc is superior if your on a budget or plan on gaming a lot on your comp. getting mac isnt a bad idea either if you prefer the OS and ur laptop will be for other things and non-gaming

important in a laptop for gaming though is a satisfactory cooling system cuz ur laptop will get VERY HOT and not only can this damage your system but it will be very uncomfortable to use.

Not Really.

Laptops that can handle Sc2 on ultra aren't portable because they are pretty damn cumbersome.

And, that isn't even really the point.

His logic of "i want to play sc2 on ultra, and i want a laptop" is what is ridiculous. He also wants this to be under 700 dollars , as it was stated in his last thread.

Portable, Powerful, Cheap. You can only pick two of the three.. Powerful and Cheap - desktop. Portable and Cheap - A decent laptop. Portable and Powerful - An expensive laptop.

And btw, i've had a "gaming laptop" and they just are not that amazing. You can't upgrade the damn things. So in 3-4 years if you want to play a diff game in "ultra" you'll have to buy a new laptop.

edit* also, what job do you work at that allows you to play sc2?

2.1ghz core duo
4GB RAM
GeForce 8400GT
Vista 64-bit
200gb Hard Drive 5400rpm
1200x800

I run it on medium with no hitches or anything. But when I usually play, I go for Low because it gives me more fps.

I've been slowly upgrading my laptop piece by piece to make SC2 run better on it. My current specs, which have it pretty much maxed out are:

Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 at 2.6Ghz (upgrade)
Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
4GB RAM at 800Mhz (upgrade)
120GB OCZ Agility 2 SSD (upgrade)
Windows 7 64-bit with my own custom vlite image

The T9500 CPU was part of the Intel Santa Rosa Refresh to extend the Santa Rosa platform. It's the fastest Core 2 Duo CPU made and I bought it on eBay new for about $250 two months ago. I had to totally disassemble my laptop to install it.

The GeForce 8600M GT video card was in the notebook when I bought. It was the high end option from the original manufacturer when I bought the system, and I splurged at the time. It works well enough with most options set to medium, and a few options set to high.

The OCZ Agility 2 SSD is a new upgrade. I caught a newegg shell shocker and bought it for $230 with no tax and free shipping. That's still $120 less than the current price at newegg. I don't know how it will effect SC2 loading times, but Iam hoping it will make loading really fast. Also, the Agility 2 and Vertex 2 use the new Sandforce SSD controller which rivals the Intel drives, though my Agility model doesn't handle reads from many small files as efficiently as the Vertex 2.

Finally, I created my own Windows 7 vlite image and remove a lot of the junk that slows down Windows and eats up disk space. English only, no media center, no media player. I also removed the winsxs backups and tweaked performance for SSDs.

Okay first off, when i created my first thread i didn't realize it would cost so much to get a high-end laptop that can play sc2, i mean you can build a computer for 600 and be able to run sc2 on ultra, so i figured 700 might be able to run it on atleast high right? wrong, unless you get a very good deal, you won't be able to get a high end laptop for anything under 900. that is why i changed my opinion on things and decided to wait a few more weeks to save up a few more hundred and just get one for around $1000-$1200

second, the fact that i want to run it on a laptop on ultra settings is not ridiculous at all, i have the money to purchase a good enough laptop that will be able to do everything i want and then some so why shouldnt i?

third, why even bother bringing up the fact that i wont be able to upgrade when i know full well that i wont need to upgrade, you do realize that i asked for a "SC2 LAPTOP" read it carefully and you will see that i want the laptop strictly for S C 2.

fourth, I do security overnights and all i do is just sit at a lobby, i've been running sc1 on my netbook for forever now and i thought this would be a great time to buy a new laptop since sc2 is being released, it's not going to be "cumbersome" due to the fact that it is PORTABLE
. I simply want to bring it to work so i can play it, does it really matter if it's big or heavy? as long as i have a desk than i should be fine, right?

Hey famz, can you do me a favor and pm me the deal or laptop you eventually go with? I would really appreciate your view cause I may be adding a laptop to my gaming rig list a couple weeks after release so I could use a starting guide.

Thanks man.

Either that or i'll just follow this thread, but just in case that be great.

Once i figure out what i'm going to get i'll PM you and update this thread, I'm also going to post a little review about it so it'll help other people in the future. I'm waiting for the end of this week which is july 4th to decide though, since i heard newegg and other major retailers have some pretty nice sales. I'm already looking at one laptop that is amazing but i'm still on the edge of pulling the trigger which is this one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834127055

I'm just not sure if this will run on ultra since it has a 330M, but i do know for a fact that 360M will. and the one thing that is great about this laptop is the keyboard, island keyboards in my opinion are the best types for RTS strategy games like sc, i could hardly play sc1 on my netbook without accidentally hitting a different key more then half the time i played. with the island keyboard that's not a problem, all you need is a mousepad and mouse and you're good to go. but like i said before i really want to wait til july 4th and see what types of deals are going to be out, saving even 100 for an i7 laptop would be a good deal.

If you want to play Ultra, and what to keep it at a good price. Get the new Toshiba Qosmio for about $1000. Its got a really nice 18.4 inch screen! One thing to consider is that it's coming from a mainstream brand, and it's brand new. There have been a fair few issues with over heating and needing to be recalled.

I would recommend the Asus-g72gx. You can pick it up on New egg for just short of $800 and it will play on Ultra. It's got a gtx260m which is a really power full mobile card that can handle every game you can throw at it on at least high. Well in fact the only game that it wont play on ultra is Battlefield bad company 2. But I've seen loads of people claim that it will, and even videos on youtube. This is the absolute best bang for buck. As far as gaming machines go, its at the lower end of the scale, but its just capable of handling games on ultra now. In 8 months or so, the latest games would need to be turned down to high. But you'll get a good few years out of it, and after all, it's pretty cheap at $750ish

If your interested in the Qosmio, it has a 360m. Which is the same chip as the 260m, but its clocked higher and has gddr5 vram rather than the gddr3 the 260m has. You'll get a little more performance out of it, but don't expect a whole lot of difference. Personally I don't think the extra inch on the screen and slightly better graphics card is worth the $300.

Like I said, I think the Asus is better. Its a very reliable company and laptop. You can check out some other Asus laptops. They have the same internals, but a smaller screen. If you don't mind a 15" screen you could get a laptop for SC ultra a bit cheaper.

Lenovo Y550P

Intel Core i7 720Q
4 GB DDR3
Nvidia Geforce 240M 1 GB
External 1680x1050 LCD connected via HDMI

It can run ultra at 20-30 fps, but struggles as unit counts get higher. I prefer medium. Even on medium or low, it chokes on 3v3 and 4v4 once all the players get 200/200 armies.

Intel core2 t8300 2.4ghz
3gb ram
Nvidia Geforece 8600M GT
1280x800 res

I play on a mixture of medium and low settings and get a good 60 fps most of the time. Drops to maybe 30-40 during big battles in 1v1.

There really isn't a huge difference between medium-ultra to be honest. The sacrifice on fps is definitely not worth it if you want to play online and be competitive.

yea thats a very old model the second generation macbook pro, which is what i have has no lag. the spec requirements for macs are higher than pc's so that is part of it. also using bootcamp for sc2 is a terrible idea. bootcamp has been creating problems for sc2 forever. like i said its not ideal but it certainly does the job.

Will the most basic model of MacBook Pro of the latest generation run the game smoothly at Medium? I'll be more than happy if it accomplishes that and don't have to spend an extra $500 for the icore model.

Will a geforce 310m (1gb ddr3) be able to run SCII at max settings? A friend I know expressed his doubts citing that 310m is a low end gcard...

My laptop:

Intel Core2Duo t9400 @ 2.54
4 gigs of DDR2 RAM
9600 GS 1GB VRAM

I rock the game with high textures, 3D Unit portraits, high effects, 1440x 900 resolution, but set shaders to I believe it was low. Looks very good, but like a totally different game than at higher shaders. Gets 60 FPS.

Starcraft II is very CPU dependent. My old 8800 GTS 640 MB couldn't run it maxed, but could run most things high enough that the stuff that was off, like SSAO, don't really look that different.

I finally decided to purchase the Asus G37JH after hours upon hours of extensive research. this laptop is probably one of the top contenders for best laptop of 2010. Specs are

Intel i7 720QM clocked at 1.6ghz with turboboost it can jump up to I believe 2.8 ghz
17.3 Inch screen
6gb of ddr3 1066mhz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1gb gddr5 1600x900 resolution

I'm pretty sure this beast of a machine can run sc2 on atleast high with maxed settings I mean this laptop has the ATI5870 the best card out right now aside from the GTX480 from nvidia which is less powerful compare to the 5870. The resolution is only 1600x900 but you can get the higher Resolution if you can spend a lil more. I hear the low resolution is actually better for gaming though. The laptop has a sleek design that has something to do with a f71 jet fighter. With 2 big fans on the backside of the laptop it can disperse alot of air fast and quick. The keyboard (from what I've seen in pictures) is the new island type I've been fond of ever since I saw them on some Sony vaio laptops. Its got the full keyboard with number pad as well. The laptop has a few models so the pricing will vary anywhere from $1200 to $1700. I purchased mine from cowboom after I found out there was a sale on one for 850 +tax. unfortunately I was too late and the price went up to 1000 but you still save $200. the downside to this is that its a refurbished laptop so the only thing you can do Is order it and cross your fingers. if the one I get is messed up ill just return it and get one from Bestbuy at for $1200 which includes the 1 year manufacturers warranty.

The laptop should be here by Monday, ill write a review about it a few days after I get it. I can't wait!!

I hate island keyboards, especially for gaming. >.> The feel isn't great and the travel is too short.

Anyways, my Ideapad Y460 is absolutely amazing and runs SC2 well.

Wow something must be wrong with my laptop then...I can't even play with everything on LOW..even 1v1 games, as soon as there are a few units out (100 supply each) my computer freeze frames me..

I have:

any resolution seems to suck, unless someone has a recommendation?

My laptop can easily cope with quite high settings in SC2 (although lagspikes occur on high settings) but the problem is that it gets overheated and turns itself off. Im sure you can understand the frustration of losing a game because the computer turns itself off when you had the lead :p
Does anyone have any tips for avoiding this? I've attempted to put some books under it on each side to lift it from the table and it has helped a bit but the problem remains.

I can run it on high with my laptop, but as people have said before, the difference seen on medium vs high is so small its not worth the performance drop on some of the larger maps such as 4v4 or nexus wars.

I ran fine on med-high graphics (customized) but often play on low to prevent the game from chopping up if Windows decides it needs to steal some processing power.

I play on a mix of High/Medium settings for playability. Certain situations (eg zerg on Metalopolis and other very large battles slow me out of Ultra settings):

2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, I forget how much RAM I'm running
Nvidia 9300M GS (256MB VRAM DDR2)
Windows 7
1280x800

I purchased my notebook about two years ago and literally got the smallest notebook possible which still had a dedicated video card (Asus U6V with a 12.1-in widescreen). As small as the screen is, I have no problem playing SC2 on it and love that I can play anywhere easily.
Race? No, I'm equally bad with all of them.

I have the f12 and it has the 330M and I can run sc2 on ultra settings with no lag.

Runs it at ultra almost perfectly, it's wicked.

Hello

I'm probably gonna buy one of these three. I was eying the middle because it's cheap + 17in screen, but I see the vid card is simply 'Intel HD'. Do I just forget it based on that?? This is a laptop for just work/bs and SC2--no other games. This was the 4th option I was looking at:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
NVIDIA GeForce 310M (512MB GDDR5 (discrete); up to 1758MB (dynamically allocated shared graphics memory using NVIDIA TurboCache technology); 2270MB total)

Runs perfectly at medium. I didn't do much tweaking yet. I bumped up minor details last night (spec effects and stuff). I'm gonna try it on high later.

The only thing is this thing overheats like a motherfucker. Don't play on your lap. It will crash. All good when it's on a desk or table or something.

I tested my comp on high and ultra.

It runs high pretty much just like medium, nice and smooth. I didn't get into any huge battles, but 2v2 and ffa play seemed fine.

I ran ultra as well. It runs, but if you're anal about performance like I am, there is a slight difference. I didn't check fps or anything, but it's enough of a drop that it's playable, but not as smooth

portability or power. Buying a laptop with the goal of "being able to play on ultra in sc2" is ridiculous

Not really. Thats kind of ignorant.

Not really, laptops are not as powerful as desktops. If you do get a laptop that can handle SC2 on ultra it will be a crazy price because you are paying for power as well as portability. Desktops are not too portable so that lowers the price as well.
Why would you ever choose failure, when success is an option.

Similar to guy above, Envy 15

But here you can't customise and it's i7-720 and 4830

Plays it pretty damn well, not wholly used to playing on a laptop yet but I'll deal with it

I usually play on high

So I have a question about whether or not my laptop can run SC2, and on what settings.

It's a two year old Lenovo T61. I use mainly for school. Specifications below:

Windows Vista Business (SP1)

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2.50 GHz 2.50 Ghz
Memory: 3GB
(32 bit OS)

Graphics Card: NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M
Video Memory: 128MB

Only 120 GB disk, though. I keep all my stuff on some huge external HDs, so I didn't think getting a big HD was useful (again, I bought this laptop because I intended for it to last me through four years of college)

Please let me know! Thanks

To use my Inspiron 1420 that I got three years ago as a data point:

Windows Vista Home Premium
C2D T5500 @ 1666 mHz
2.0 GB RAM
GeForce 8400M GS

It runs SC2 fine in 1v1 (haven't tried the other modes) on Medium, though I usually turn it down to Low. It's remarkable how well it runs actually.

According to this:

Yours is roughly comparable to mine. I wouldn't worry about it.

everything set to ultra, 1080p resolution silky smooth, the laptops cooling is SUPER amazing itll blow all that hot air out but wont let the laptop get hot at all (the bottom gets a little warm right by the fan otherwise its perfect)

I also have the same laptop. I hadn't purchased SC2 yet but this sounds very promising.

Also, found this link today, but I'm not sure how accurate it is. Gonna give it a try when I get home from work.

i have a HP DV8 1099eo

CPU: Intel Core i7 Q720 @ 1.66ghz
RAM: 4gb DDR3 1333mhz
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GT230m 1gb
HDD: 1tb sata drive 7200 rpm
Screen: 18.4 inch (1920x1080 - 16x9 )
OS: Windows 7 home premium 64-bit

This laptop is amazing for media/gaming, the graphics card isn't the absolute top but it handles SC2 good.
Because of the extremely high resolution for a laptop screen and the graphics card, i can't play SC2 at maxed settings, but it handles medium-high on full HD and ultra on lower resolutions.

( usually i max all the settings that requires high CPU because the CPU in this laptop is amazing, and i keep the GPU intensive settings a little lower to avoid lagg.)
Also it's very pleasent to play games on because of the 18.4inch screen size and the keyboard is full size with numpad, and it also has really good speakers ( altec lansing 2.1, with an actual subwoofer on the bottom of the computer)

asus g73jh-tz038v

intel core i7 720qm @1.6 ghz with 4 cores and 1/1/6/9 turbo boost rates. (ie with 3 or 4 cores active, each runs at 1.73 ghz, with 2 cores active they run at ~ 2.4 ghz, with one core active it runs at ~ 2.8 ghz)
8gb ddr3 ram 1333 mhz (dont know the timings)
ati radeon mobility hd 5870 with 1 gb ddr5 vram
2*500 gb hdds with 7200 upm
17.3" fullhd display with 1920x1080 pixels
blueray drive

as long as there arent too many units on the screen, it runs sc2 at over 60 fps with all settings maxed. with shaders set to low and texture to only high (looks more pleasant than ultra imho...), the fps dont even drop below 40 during very large battles in 1v1. only during huge battles in 2v2 or higher, the cpu becomes a limiting factor and the framerates drop down to some 20ish, but still acceptable imho.

what i like most about this laptop is how silent its fans are. very very nice. and as this thing is intended as a desktop replacement anyway it perfectly fits my needs.

another pro of laptops instead of desktop pcs is power consumption. yes, powerful desktop replacement laptops cost quite a lot, but compared to desktop pcs with the same power, they will save about 100€ of energy costs per year where i live and with my consumption (using my pc/laptop quite a lot).

My advice: Don't get Asus G51J (I can't run it even on medium)

Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 6MB Cache) up to 2.93Hz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1GB GDDR3 memory
4GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM (2GB x 2)
Two 320GB Seagate 7200RPM Hard Drives

Anyone else having this problem?

Intel Core i5 520M @ 2.40GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 310M
7200rpm HDD
4 (3) GB RAM but running 32bit W7

I can run on close to medium settings fairly well, using 1280x720 resolution.

What do you guys think of this computer? I really only need the computer for Starcraft 2 and schoolwork, so I think this should be ok to run the game at medium settings, unfortunately I'm terrible with the hardware side of computers so a second opinion from some intelligent people would be nice (my family and friends also have a very limited knowledge of computers), thanks!

Hello All,

Posted a few weeks back on what kind of laptop to get. Ended up scoring an Asus g72GX from bestbuy clearance for $750. Here are the specs:

◦Intel® Core™2 Duo mobile processor P8700
Features 2 processing cores, 1066MHz system bus, 3MB L2 cache and 2.53GHz processor speed per core.
◦6GB DDR2 memory
◦17.3" LED-backlit LCD high-definition plus widescreen display
With 1600 x 900 resolution showcases movies and games in stunning clarity.
◦500GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
◦NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphics
1GB GDDR3

Anyways, I have been running multiplayer games on Ultra no problem but I will be playing the campaign for a while and then all of the sudden my FPS will plummet and I lag like crazy. I checked the temps and it's running at a cool 75° C so I'm pretty sure it's not a heat issue. BTW I'm rather green when it comes to diagnosing computer problems. Is this laptop just not able to hang or do I have some kind of problem? Maybe garbage RAM? The laptop was an open box deal so I'm wondering if this is why it was returned in the first place. Apart from this though, the lappy runs great.

Also if something is f-ed up, is Asus as good as they say with their 1 year warranty?

If they're minimum specs they're probably for the lowest settings.

carpet: The graphics card is the limiting factor, but it should be enough for medium. The price is reasonable for the specs, but it's not a great steal. I'd be more concerned with finding out if the build quality, keyboard, screen, etc., are to your liking, but that's not something you can easily determine online.

ben440ny: Is 75 degrees the CPU or GPU temperature? Also, is this what you read after gaming (or alt-tabbing) or something that was automatically recorded during gaming? Temperatures can drop quite quickly--make sure to record the peak temperature and not something else. Sudden FPS drops sounds like the CPU or GPU throttling itself down to prevent from overheating. You can try turning all power/performance settings to "maximum performance" and try disabling SpeedStep, but be sure not to cook your computer while trying that!

Lightswarm: Minimum specs are for lowest settings at semi-playable frame rates usually.

1280 x 800 all medium no problem, but i stick with low to get that extra fps and smoothness.

in order to see more of you folks in sc2, here are some "rules of thumb".

1)
- sc2 really likes to use high amounts of CPU cache especially for spell effects.
this goes quite well with modern CPUs, where cache is usually a bit higher.
besides that, you should be able to get really good results with a dual core CPU around 2,4 -2,8 ghz. well.. depends on all other components.

2)
a very important thing is the graphics card ("GPU"). starcraft likes to run this basterd so high it sometimes even gets broken because of too many heat. (current problem even in battle net menus, where the GPU isnt slowing down and killing some pcs with high amounts of GPU heat)
here is your rule of thumb: if its no real stand alone graphic card (i mean something like shared memory with the CPU) and maybe not even nvidia (geforce) or ATI (radeon), you can forget to get any usable results in the very most cases.
those cards are often used in laptops, because they use much less power.

then there are performance issues, if you use any card, that ships with the "m" or "mobility" sign in its name. they have usually the same features and new stuff like those desktop cards, but are very much weaker, so you cant compare any radeon HD3570 mobile with a radeon HD3570 (dont know, if there even exists a mobile version here)

"what should i look for?" - look for rather high end "mobility" cards, like radeon HD5xxx and not HD3xxx, or look for laptops, where the "m" or "mobility" is missing in the name of their graphics card.

3)
how much RAM???
pretty easy. depends mostly on your OS.
if you use vista or windows 7 i recommend you 3-4 GB
if you are using XP, try 2GB.
-> besides: there is - i would call it a bug - in sc2. it seems, the longer you run it, the more RAM it will grab. starts with 600-900 mb and after 6-8 hours maybe already uses 3,3 gb (if you have that much). but this issue is about blizzard, not about your laptop choices.

4)
display and resolution:
well.. it depends.. as everything nowdays.
if you want to go for sc2 on ultra and pay a very cheap price for your laptop, you should go for those 1366 x 768 resolutions on 15-15.6 " displays. should be pretty easy to get strong results in sc2. if you want to get the most of the best of the highest with some awesomeness, than you prob. should look for very costy 1920er resolutions on 17" and bigger displays.

understanding performance here is simple.
as tests from tomshardware.com &Co have shown, starcrafts hardware needs scale pretty even with the resolution.
if you have 1366 x 768 its about 1mio pixels.
and if you want to go for 1920x1080 there is way more detail, but also 2mio pixel to handle, what would take nearly the double performance/ressources from your laptop specs.

decide: width of 1366? 1600? 1920?
here imo lies the most difference in laptop prices for starcraft 2.
you can get a good 1366er display laptop and run everything on ultra for around 820$ or 650 €
or you want the best of the best and go for 1920? then you will need > 1000 $, and really have to pray, to play the game higher then on medium settings.

5)
other things?
- dont use vista. cause it sucks hard. win7 feels pretty much the same, but uses way less ressources.

i really hope, that brings some understanding to you.
some may disagree with specific details so i can say once again "it depends" - on your subjective preferences and goals.

ps: always take a look at the heat, if starcraft runs larger battles or you were afk on the battle net menus. backup your files ;D
Yes.

How do you determine what the best CPU you can get for your laptop is? I currently have a P8700 installed in mine and I'm thinking of upgrading to a P9700, although if the option of upgrading to a T9900 or even a Q9100 is possible then I'll go there.

Hi everyone!

I recently bought a 14" Asus U45JC laptop, I wasn't really expecting to game on it but I thought it would be able to run SC2 on at least low at a high fps.

The specifications are:
CPU:Intel Core i3-370M Processor (2.4 GHz)
GPU:Nvidia G310M 1GB DDR3 Dedicated VRAM
RAM: 4GB
OS: Windows 7
Resolution: 1366x768

My fps on low is around 25, and it isnt smooth at all. Thanks for the help, appreciate it!!

M11x r1
Specs:
Intel Pentium SU4100@1.73 Ghz (dual core)
Nvidia Geforce GT 335m
4GB Ram
1366x768

Runs on medium for the best compromise between smooth gameplay and eye candy. It can run on high but will sometimes drop down to 20ish fps during big battles.

Generally, you look at what socket size your MOBO supports. However, that information for laptops is rarely given out. To be honest, upgrading a CPU on a laptop is REALLY hard and not advised, unless you know what you're doing. In most cases, the CPU(and GPU for that matter) are soldered onto the board. You should definitely not mess with it then.

I've got an XPS M1730.
Intel Core 2 Extreme, normally 2.8 GHz but I've overclocked to 3.0GHz
4 GB DDR2 RAM
2x GeForce 8700m GT
1920x1200
Windows 7

It can usually handle straight high, but larger armies cause lag so I bumped my shaders down to medium. I also had to download some third party software to prevent CPU throttling, I don't why. Runs very cool though, that's a plus. For a 4 year old laptop I'm pretty happy.

I had a back and forth email with blizzard support dude and i was checking out the laptop of a DELL if this was enough to handle SC2.

This is the mail.

Have you guys picked a good laptop yet and which one is good? Toshiba Satellite or Dell?

Studio 15 Laptop
Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz (3M cache)
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz
15.6 inch High Definition (720p) LED Display with TrueLife and Camera
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512MB
320GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Disk Drive

is what i got back in march earlier this year, and i've been able to run the beta and regular sc2 game on low settings fairly easily (sometimes it gets too be too much if there is a TON of units). It's probably only because the gfx card is only 512mb instead of 1gb (well it could obviously be better too), and because i only have an i3.

Either way, I only paid $760 then (and prices have already gone down -.-'') but I got everything I wanted and it was a little more since I added a backlit keyboard (which is surprising hard to find a computer that can handle games and has backlit keyboard under $1000). My next choice was probably going to be an ASUS g70s series or a MacBook Pro (but i decided the ASUS g series were too heavy being twice the size, and that I dislike steve jobs ).

If it is any help, this is the reply I got back from Blizzard.
So the laptop mentioned in my previous post does meet the requirements.
And should be fine to use with SC2.

Hello Txxx,

The HD 5470 they use meets the minimum requirements. If it's a model using (GDDR5) memory, it slightly exceeds them.

most modern laptops have the ram and CPU to handle SC2...

I think the most important is to get a laptop with a good video card.

Is this ati hd 5470 good enough a videocard for a laptop?

And what models use GDDR5? Like the support dude says in the post? That is for the videocard i assume.

I just got my laptop yesterday, Dell Studio 15.

2.4 ghz Core i5 450m
6gb DDR3
500gb 7200rpm SATA
ati mobility radeon hd 5470

It is a very fast computer. It can play Starcraft on low settings very easily. Once I bump it up to Medium or High however, I get some mouse lag. If you go into settings and click the Reduce Mouse Lag button, it runs Medium and High graphics very well (however, you get a drop in FPS. Not sure how much of a drop. Still is playable imo though). I usually play on Medium, because I can't really tell a difference between that and High.

I got this laptop to play starcraft 2, and to do everything else I want. As far as browsing the web and multitasking, it's a very fast computer. Starcraft 2 is playable on Medium with the reduce mouse lag option and the best part is it isn't SUPER expensive. I got mine for $734 dollars from Dell after tax. Not too bad, I'd say.
Its pretty alright

This is my first post on TL so firstly i would like to say Hi to all TL members,
I have laptop - HP dv5
Intel core 2 duo P7350 2.00ghz
3Gb RAM
GeForce 9600GTM
and windows vista.
I think its pretty good laptop (I can play Assaisn creed 1 and 2, and other new games but game like GTA IV is too much for it) but even on the lowest settings in big battles i have big FPS drops, i cant play 3v3 or 4v4 due to low FPS.
Could you tell my if it is normal on this kind of laptop or i have sth going wrong ?

i agree. the cpu is too weak for big battles in 3v3 or 4v4, the gpu is too weak for big battles, even with low settings.

Thanks for reply, I tried SC 2 on Toshiba laptop with Intel T4300, 3 gb ram and Intel graphic on windows 7 and it was interesting because at the start I had lower FPS count than on my HP laptop (about 16 FPS), but when it comes to big battles even in 3v3 and 4v4 i had the same FPS count(16), on my HP I have rly good FPS even on high settings but when comes to big battles its just dropping to like 4 FPS. Is Intel T4300 better than P7350 ?

This topic showed up on the Battle.net forums. I wrote a summary there for this thread, but I think it makes sense to cross-post it here, too.

http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/801801435?page=1

-------

I took a lot of notes and went through the posts before I purchased my notebook. Here's my notes from the thread. I hope you find them useful:

Notebooks that were able to play at 1920x1080 on Ultra settings include:

Sony Vaio F12 (i7 720QM, 6 GB RAM, nVidia 330M, $1589 US)
HP Envy 15 (i5 540, Radeon Mobility 5830, $2000 US)
ASUS G73JH-TZ038V (i7 720QM, 8 GB RAM, Radeon Mobility 5870)

Notebooks that didn't work at 1920x1080 on Ultra:
ASUS G51J (i7 720QM, 4 GB RAM, nVidia 260M)

From what I could tell, the nVidia 2xx series can't play 1920x1080 on Ultra. The Radeon Mobility 58xx can. It sounded like both the i5 and i7 processors can run that fast. Be careful, though, because the mobile versions of the CPUs are different than the desktop versions, both in the number of cores and the amount of L3 cache.

Also for comparison, my old notebook, a Core2 Duo with a nVidia Quadro 110M couldn't play StarCraft II at 1024x768 on all Low settings.

I ended up purchasing an Alienware M15x. I spent $2070 US. I could have saved $230 US if I didn't want Windows 7 Pro and the Blu-Ray player. I also wanted to have an integrated DVD-ROM instead of an attachment, so I didn't look at the M11x, which also could have saved money. It's a considerable investment, considering that it only took $700 to upgrade my home desktop to be able to play StarCraft II at 1920x1080 on Ultra.

This notebook plays StarCraft II at 1920x1080 on Ultra settings. It doesn't lag in single player, ladder games, 2v2, or 3v3. I haven't played in 4v4 games or in some of the custom maps, though.

I like the notebook. It's a lot bigger than I expected, though. It didn't fit in my old computer bag.

Some other prices that I found:
Used ASUS ASG51JX-A1 for $1200 on Facebook
ASUS G51JX-X2 $1200 Amazon 1080p NVIDIA GeForce 360M 1 GB DDR5
ASUS G51JX-X3 $1031 Amazon 1080p LED 360M http://www.amazon.com/Republic-Gamers-G51JX-X3-15-6-Inch-Gaming/dp/B00361G0ZO

I hope that you (the original poster) find some of this information useful.

I havent read the whole thread, so pardon me if this has been posted before.

If you have the cash for it, I would High HIGHLY recomend the HP Envy 14.
I ussually hate HP products but this laptop is probably the best made computer I have ever layed hands on (and Im a slut when it comes to computers).

It comes with Two Graphics cards, a dedicated one for when your plugged in, and an onboard for when you are in class/on a plane etc. The transition between them takes a second, and can freeze the whole laptop to the point of a hard reset if you try and switch while too much is going on. But that only troubled me for like the first week.

It can play SC2 On High/Ultra Easy when its on its dedicated graphics, but at the same time, I use it for university to take notes and I get atleast 6 hours of battery life out of it, and thats with Wifi on most of the time, and medium brightness.

Other than GFX and battery life, its incredibly well built. Solid, Durable, great keyboard (a chiclet keryboard though so some may not like it, I think it feels amazing to type on, and has a pretty decent 'click' to the keys so Its good for starcraft too.

There are only 3 things about it I dont like.
-No HDMI/DVI Out, Only two USB ports
-Glossy Screen not so hot for outdoors
-Like all HP laptops comes with a ton of bloatware, but that only took me about 45 minutes to scalpel out.

That's with a $200 external battery.

i7 920 3.2ghz
6gb ram
hd 4890 1gb
1920x1080

60fps at ultra
loads faster than opponent 90% of the time
for some reason it always stutters for half a second at the beginning of each game (perfect for me to do a half split)

i play on high, i dont really see a difference and logically in my brain its decreasing the stress on my video card to allow it to last longer

HP dv6-2190us

Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit)
i7-720QM
4GB DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M
500GB (7200RPM)
15.6" Display
1366x768 Resolution

It can run Medium even on 4v4. I play Medium most of the time as Ultra isn't a big difference on my laptop. I've tried Ultra and it can play Ultra a bit. It will slow down a bit and my laptop gets really hot whenever there's a big showdown.

hi there,

I see you are discussing about the CPU power for SC2. I have Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13MHz) and I have some drops in fps in 4v4 and I am wondering if it will have any result if I overclock it to 2.7Mhz. My system is good except for my CPU. I overclocked it to 2.4 but there were still fps drops :S
