I created a thread about a week ago asking what type of laptop should a person get if they want to play sc2 on ultra or at least high settings without any lag/crash/stutter problems, i got mixed reply's suggesting different laptops and a bunch was just your usual "go for a desktop, they're cheaper anyways, etc. . ." I want to get a laptop because of portability so a desktop is out of the question, i didn't really get a lot out of the last thread so I'm going to try my luck on this one.

All i need you guys to do is post your rig, make sure you post RAM, CPU, & VIDEOCARD, for your laptops and please include resolution because this is an important factor as well, and also the highest settings you can play at.

I'm going to gather up all the information and post the best laptop for the money depending on what settings you would prefer, of course everybody wants to play on ultra but if you just don't have that type of money than wouldn't you rather get one that can at least play the game?

If there's already a thread like than i am sorry to waste your time but if not then i think this is a good idea for people who would rather have portability than power.

4GB DDR3 RAM
2.53GHz C2D
Intel 9400M Graphics

I can play at medium & full resolution, but usually stick it at low to keep my laptop cooler; can't notice the difference anyways.

Also, I'm at 1440x900 and have a 5400rpm HDD.

You only notice the difference between medium, high, and ultra on large screenbs. On a regular 15" laptop screen, the difference between settings is negligible. My laptop runs medium, and I could run on high, but as I said, the only difference between the two is a performance drop.

Core i5 dual core @ 2.4 ghz

i run at medium with no lag at all. I can run ultra to but it lags in big battles.

4GB DDR3 Ram
2.4GHz core duo
nvidia Geforce 9600Gt
windows 7 64bit
1280x800
7200rpm hd

only downfall your laptop will run hot so watch your lap. maybe buy a laptop cooler fan pad? it will make a little difference.

so you said it yourself " i think this is a good idea for people who would rather have portability than power."

portability or power. Buying a laptop with the goal of "being able to play on ultra in sc2" is ridiculous

I'd agree with this. The big jump by far is from Low to Medium, and for Medium you shouldn't have any real problem finding a modern laptop that can handle it. My 3 year old Macbook Pro (2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 8600M GT) can handle Medium at 1152x720, in the Mac client which is reputedly slower. Pretty much any new laptop that isn't a low end piece of trash without a real video card should handle Medium with no problems and probably High.

for a laptop you wil need a pretty highpowered pc gaming computer for ultra but otherwise as long as you have the recommended specs from blizzard in every category you will run on medium with no lag or frame-rate drop.

I have a 15" inch macbook pro. it is not ideal for sc2 and i can only run on medium-low, but obviously this computer wasnt purchased for gaming but it does the job with no difficulty whatsoever. not to turn this into pc or mac debate but pc is superior if your on a budget or plan on gaming a lot on your comp. getting mac isnt a bad idea either if you prefer the OS and ur laptop will be for other things and non-gaming

important in a laptop for gaming though is a satisfactory cooling system cuz ur laptop will get VERY HOT and not only can this damage your system but it will be very uncomfortable to use.

Not Really.

Laptops that can handle Sc2 on ultra aren't portable because they are pretty damn cumbersome.

And, that isn't even really the point.

His logic of "i want to play sc2 on ultra, and i want a laptop" is what is ridiculous. He also wants this to be under 700 dollars , as it was stated in his last thread.

Portable, Powerful, Cheap. You can only pick two of the three.. Powerful and Cheap - desktop. Portable and Cheap - A decent laptop. Portable and Powerful - An expensive laptop.

And btw, i've had a "gaming laptop" and they just are not that amazing. You can't upgrade the damn things. So in 3-4 years if you want to play a diff game in "ultra" you'll have to buy a new laptop.

edit* also, what job do you work at that allows you to play sc2?

2.1ghz core duo
4GB RAM
GeForce 8400GT
Vista 64-bit
200gb Hard Drive 5400rpm
1200x800

I run it on medium with no hitches or anything. But when I usually play, I go for Low because it gives me more fps.

I've been slowly upgrading my laptop piece by piece to make SC2 run better on it. My current specs, which have it pretty much maxed out are:

Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 at 2.6Ghz (upgrade)
Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
4GB RAM at 800Mhz (upgrade)
120GB OCZ Agility 2 SSD (upgrade)
Windows 7 64-bit with my own custom vlite image

The T9500 CPU was part of the Intel Santa Rosa Refresh to extend the Santa Rosa platform. It's the fastest Core 2 Duo CPU made and I bought it on eBay new for about $250 two months ago. I had to totally disassemble my laptop to install it.

The GeForce 8600M GT video card was in the notebook when I bought. It was the high end option from the original manufacturer when I bought the system, and I splurged at the time. It works well enough with most options set to medium, and a few options set to high.

The OCZ Agility 2 SSD is a new upgrade. I caught a newegg shell shocker and bought it for $230 with no tax and free shipping. That's still $120 less than the current price at newegg. I don't know how it will effect SC2 loading times, but Iam hoping it will make loading really fast. Also, the Agility 2 and Vertex 2 use the new Sandforce SSD controller which rivals the Intel drives, though my Agility model doesn't handle reads from many small files as efficiently as the Vertex 2.

Finally, I created my own Windows 7 vlite image and remove a lot of the junk that slows down Windows and eats up disk space. English only, no media center, no media player. I also removed the winsxs backups and tweaked performance for SSDs.

Okay first off, when i created my first thread i didn't realize it would cost so much to get a high-end laptop that can play sc2, i mean you can build a computer for 600 and be able to run sc2 on ultra, so i figured 700 might be able to run it on atleast high right? wrong, unless you get a very good deal, you won't be able to get a high end laptop for anything under 900. that is why i changed my opinion on things and decided to wait a few more weeks to save up a few more hundred and just get one for around $1000-$1200

second, the fact that i want to run it on a laptop on ultra settings is not ridiculous at all, i have the money to purchase a good enough laptop that will be able to do everything i want and then some so why shouldnt i?

third, why even bother bringing up the fact that i wont be able to upgrade when i know full well that i wont need to upgrade, you do realize that i asked for a "SC2 LAPTOP" read it carefully and you will see that i want the laptop strictly for S C 2.

fourth, I do security overnights and all i do is just sit at a lobby, i've been running sc1 on my netbook for forever now and i thought this would be a great time to buy a new laptop since sc2 is being released, it's not going to be "cumbersome" due to the fact that it is PORTABLE
. I simply want to bring it to work so i can play it, does it really matter if it's big or heavy? as long as i have a desk than i should be fine, right?

My older brother has a 1st generation intel based macbook pro with bootcamp running vista, for some reason he can only run it only on low and its very laggy at the beginning of the game, and then it has random lag spikes and it gets laggy as hell whenever theres a battle. I'm pretty sure it's because he only has 1gb of ram.

Hey famz, can you do me a favor and pm me the deal or laptop you eventually go with? I would really appreciate your view cause I may be adding a laptop to my gaming rig list a couple weeks after release so I could use a starting guide.

Thanks man.

Either that or i'll just follow this thread, but just in case that be great.

Once i figure out what i'm going to get i'll PM you and update this thread, I'm also going to post a little review about it so it'll help other people in the future. I'm waiting for the end of this week which is july 4th to decide though, since i heard newegg and other major retailers have some pretty nice sales. I'm already looking at one laptop that is amazing but i'm still on the edge of pulling the trigger which is this one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834127055

I'm just not sure if this will run on ultra since it has a 330M, but i do know for a fact that 360M will. and the one thing that is great about this laptop is the keyboard, island keyboards in my opinion are the best types for RTS strategy games like sc, i could hardly play sc1 on my netbook without accidentally hitting a different key more then half the time i played. with the island keyboard that's not a problem, all you need is a mousepad and mouse and you're good to go. but like i said before i really want to wait til july 4th and see what types of deals are going to be out, saving even 100 for an i7 laptop would be a good deal.

If you want to play Ultra, and what to keep it at a good price. Get the new Toshiba Qosmio for about $1000. Its got a really nice 18.4 inch screen! One thing to consider is that it's coming from a mainstream brand, and it's brand new. There have been a fair few issues with over heating and needing to be recalled.

I would recommend the Asus-g72gx. You can pick it up on New egg for just short of $800 and it will play on Ultra. It's got a gtx260m which is a really power full mobile card that can handle every game you can throw at it on at least high. Well in fact the only game that it wont play on ultra is Battlefield bad company 2. But I've seen loads of people claim that it will, and even videos on youtube. This is the absolute best bang for buck. As far as gaming machines go, its at the lower end of the scale, but its just capable of handling games on ultra now. In 8 months or so, the latest games would need to be turned down to high. But you'll get a good few years out of it, and after all, it's pretty cheap at $750ish

If your interested in the Qosmio, it has a 360m. Which is the same chip as the 260m, but its clocked higher and has gddr5 vram rather than the gddr3 the 260m has. You'll get a little more performance out of it, but don't expect a whole lot of difference. Personally I don't think the extra inch on the screen and slightly better graphics card is worth the $300.

Like I said, I think the Asus is better. Its a very reliable company and laptop. You can check out some other Asus laptops. They have the same internals, but a smaller screen. If you don't mind a 15" screen you could get a laptop for SC ultra a bit cheaper.
