WCS AM will continue to include LatAm, Oceania/SEA, CN, and TW/HK/Macau, you can all stop freaking out about it.

Why don't they change the name from WCS NA to some other name since there are more non American countries represented than there are North American?

It can be confusing if we change the name every time we make changes to the same league. This year we made the decision to keep the name WCS America because once players qualify into the league, they play on the Americas server. The live on-site premier league matches also take place in America. It will work the same way in 2015.

Since players must have residency now, does that mean all the matches in WCS NA and EU will take place offline or will that not change?

Reread who is part of the am/na region.

The victory is meaningless if he doesn't win against real competition IMO. Sure he gets paid but there's only so much of that kind of competition disparity I can watch.

This is the best possible solution.

Now if prize money gets adapted to this change its literally perfect.
Why is there so much discussion about it going on?

They should really give Korea more tournaments then, like Code S, Code A and let's say make Code B an entire tournament of it's own.

So, basically no change at all for WCS EU except for San, because the rest of Korean are part of the Europe scene and play for Europe team. I don't follow WCS AM because of the air time, so I don't care and no change for GSL. Cool cool cool

GSL is changing because it means all of the Korean players that aren't residents are going to have come back home. That means players like Taeja and Jaedong now have to qualify and compete against the already absurdly stacked Code S roster.

Well, more high level games in GSL is even better for me. Cool cool cool cool!

BTW I thought that JD lives in US, so he would be WCS NA material. Taeja and Hero... sad story :D :D I think Red Bull can support Bomber in US too

Code S can literally not get any more high level than it already is.

These changes are bad because there are now more top level players competing in GSL than there are spots in Code S (that's already the case as it is)

That means more fan favorites being knocked out in the Code A qualifiers or in Code A before they ever get a chance to compete in Code S.

It means that players that already have trouble qualifying for Code S now have even more competition to compete against.

This is really really bad for the Korean scene there's really no way around it. Blizzard has to know what kind of can of worms they are opening with these changes. If they don't provide adequate compensation to the Korean scene to account for all of this mass retirements are really inevitable.

Well I can imagine that WCS NA will be never ending fight between Polt and Scarlett, maybe Bomber & some Chinese player. So I expect decline of viewers. WCS EU will be unchanged, good. San may change his residency to Taiwan so he can go to WCS NA safely I assume.

I agree that GSL is over stacked and will be even more. And I agree that the usual fan favorites are more likely to not get to Code S But that's not ours decision. As much as I agree it's wrong, I don't follow any "future former" WCS NA player. So, yeah, I agree, but I don't care, actually.
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

I don't get why this is happening at all, unless something is in place in Korea to increase the amount of slots in Code S/tournaments this is just going to fuck over all the Koreans from WCS AM who I'm pretty sure moved over in the first place as the GSL was too stacked for the amount of players KR has. Additionally, any AM region player worth their salt was already qualified into WCS anyway, if EU players can cope with an influx of Koreans and get better from it, why can't the AM players?

Looks like I'll only watch WCS AM to watch the Chinese players, Violet and Polt have their way with NA players not named Scarlett and MajOr.

most regional sports don't even grant the same number of seeds per region. the world cup, the most often cited analogous tournament, gives 13 to europe, 4/5 to south america, 5 to africa, 4/5 to asia, 3/4 to concacaf and 0/1 to new zealand.

it wouldn't be unfair, given there is a precedent in "world cup" type of tournaments, to give 2x as many wcs points and prize money to korea.

Honestly if they goal was to "develop" various scenes, they should have gone the route of having some means of going from ladder to Blizzcon (in addition to all the other stuff). IIRC, Hearthstone does it already with a mix of tournaments and ladders. Only allow competitors to register for one of the 3 ladders and you've effectively funneled a bunch of players back into the NA ladder.

Something like 3 ladder seeds (maybe winners of each season get to play in some pre-Blizzcon wildcard tournament), 3x WCS seeds, x IEM/DH, and x for all the other stuff would work, no?

While your point stands, Code S can get even more high level, than it is now. Imagine the current roster and then replace Hush, Trust and Avenge with Bomber, Taeja and Hyun (Although Hyun might move to EU). If the entire premier league has to requalify, there will be casualties for everyone. There will be some (former) WCS NA fan favorites, that will not make it. There will also be some kespa players, that do not make it, who were expected to do. But maybe these chaotic circumstances will be just the right time, where the king rises again and finally gets his G5L.

Because clearly your conclusion is not agreed upon by everyone.

But why?
Getting a work visa is not that hard and isn't it obvious that players that play their qualifiers in Korea and then only fly to NA/EU for the Ro16+ is a stupid system?

Because this way worse players will get money and WCS points over better players.

Well, It'd be even more stupid to basically kill the Korean scene by forcing ALL the Koreans to play in Korea. During Proleague most Koreans won't go abroad too often, only 32 players will be in Code S most likely, 3 Code S per season... I don't think it's a fair format.
Koreans will have a harder time qualifying for Code A than players in WCS NA will have to win the premier league.

and watching avilo ragequit every other TvP is perfectly fine? Plus I think you're seriously underestimating US immigration if you think they're just going to give out work visas for a bunch of Korean Progamers, most of whom don't have large teams to help them actually apply for it in the first place, then there's the whole where they are going to live, they get that work visa they need to relocate to AM and can't leave. Just look at Demuslim before he switched back to EU. He was completely locked down in the US cause of his visa.

Hi TL.net!

As much as I would like to address all of your questions and concerns, the reality is we're still finalizing the details of WCS 2015 with our partners. We wanted to share the more important changes immediately so players can start planning for next year. More information on the residency rules and requirements will be communicated to the impacted players directly and will also be updated in our official handbook for 2015.

It's safe to say that the changes in progress will have an impact on the points distribution, which is currently being assessed. We will be sharing a comprehensive WCS 2015 announcement later this year. Please stay tuned!

Thank you for your continued support and feedback. We really appreciate the StarCraft II community <3

They have to up GSL's prize money and points by a lot. At least double what EU and NA have.

They also have to change the Korean-favored top-heavy prize distribution, you can't win money in Korea if you're not at least RO32 Code S.

I like the up in level that we will see in Korea, but I'm also scared we will have a lot of retirements, too many players for only ONE tournament where only the top finishers get some decent money...

Maybe give us IEM and Dreamhack Korea to help a little ?
StarCraft II for ever.
