WCS AM will continue to include LatAm, Oceania/SEA, CN, and TW/HK/Macau, you can all stop freaking out about it.

They are going to give out the exact same number of points, just like every other regional sport in creation.

Oh It's a good thing SC2 is not like every other regional sport in creation.

It would be absolutely foolish at this point to think that WCS Korea should be worth as many points as EU or NA now. The difference in competition level even without this region lock is already absurd, after these changes go through it will be absolutely ridiculous.

I hope you guys already realize this. I hope your comment right here means you do.

I think it's gonna shrink viewer numbers actually, a lot of people like myself want to see the best players, not just players from their countries. It's nice when we have players that fall into both categories but I think that's too much to ask.

I just wish the GSL had a much larger prize pool to take into account the far better players, and larger player pool and wasn't so incredibly top heavy (1st gets 66k, 2nd down to 14k), although I recall reading the players wanted this :S.
If the strugglers who battle like hell just to make the ro32 or even Code A got more financial support then that would be a good compromise for this, but yeh my initial thoughts upon reading this news was that there are going to be a large number of retirements, which is never a good thing.

Edit- Yeah point distribution could be looked at as well.

most regional sports don't even grant the same number of seeds per region. the world cup, the most often cited analogous tournament, gives 13 to europe, 4/5 to south america, 5 to africa, 4/5 to asia, 3/4 to concacaf and 0/1 to new zealand.

it wouldn't be unfair, given there is a precedent in "world cup" type of tournaments, to give 2x as many wcs points and prize money to korea.

What would be unfair is for them to NOT adjust the prize pools and point distribution after this mess.

The Code A qualifiers are going to be twice as difficult as EU or NA premier will be. How in the world does it make sense to keep the regions equal after that?

It can be confusing if we change the name every time we make changes to the same league. This year we made the decision to keep the name WCS America because once players qualify into the league, they play on the Americas server. The live on-site premier league matches also take place in America. It will work the same way in 2015.

So, basically no change at all for WCS EU except for San, because the rest of Korean players are part of the Europe scene and play for Europe team. I don't follow WCS AM because of the air time, so I don't care and no change for GSL. Cool cool cool
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

EU premier will still feature a good amout of koreans, since they mostly live in Düsseldorf or Switzerland. NA premier however will not be comparable to Code A and I wouldn't bet on it being stronger than EU challenger either. I hope they give a lot of spots to China, that might get a decent skill level into NA.

GSL is changing because it means all of the Korean players that aren't residents are going to have come back home. That means players like Taeja and Jaedong now have to qualify and compete against the already absurdly stacked Code S roster.

I'd guess ro32 is still online. The travelling distance from Russia, Spain or Iceland to Germany is still pretty huge.

Why it took so long for full region lock ? It just makes sense the player has to be full resident ...

Well, more high level games in GSL is even better for me. Cool cool cool cool!

BTW I thought that JD lives in US, so he would be WCS NA material. Taeja and Hero... sad story :D :D I think Red Bull can support Bomber in US too

Code S can literally not get any more high level than it already is.

These changes are bad because there are now more top level players competing in GSL than there are spots in Code S (that's already the case as it is)

That means more fan favorites being knocked out in the Code A qualifiers or in Code A before they ever get a chance to compete in Code S.

It means that players that already have trouble qualifying for Code S now have even more competition to compete against.

This is really really bad for the Korean scene there's really no way around it. Blizzard has to know what kind of can of worms they are opening with these changes. If they don't provide adequate compensation to the Korean scene to account for all of this mass retirements are really inevitable.

So basically lots of European/NA players are gonna qualify for Blizzcon/get the same amount of money by doing well in a tournament that's gonna be a lot easier to win than to even qualify for Code A in GSL?
... I don't like it.
