WCS AM will continue to include LatAm, Oceania/SEA, CN, and TW/HK/Macau, you can all stop freaking out about it.

This is a pretty big 'fuck you' to the korean players playing overseas. I feel bad for the players that will retire because of this. Granted, the system should have been region locked from the start, but changing this now is giving the middle finger to the players that have gone through the trouble of traveling and trying to get settled in NA and EU. Even if making the system open at the start was a mistake, it should be left alone at this point. Hopefully there are more changes that haven't been announced that will help the koreans, like increasing the size and payouts of GSL to make that region more survivable for the effort it takes to compete.

It's kind of laughable how badly the best players are treated by the system.

It's better for Starcraft overall if a single country doesn't dominate the scene entirely. There are two schools of thought when it comes to how foreigners can reach the skill levels necessary so that this ceases to be the case. One is the way that was done these past 2 years - force them to play each other, and eventually, they'll have to either learn or disappear. The other school of thought is this new one - give them something to compete for themselves, and a foreign competitive circuit can develop to the point where they can actually dedicate themselves to full-time paying and a dedicated training regiment.

Which one is right? What makes things work better for Starcraft? If I knew the answer to that, I'd be looking at a bus schedule to Irvine right now to tell Blizzard myself. They tried one, they're going to try the other. Sadly, any transition to support the foreigners will inevitably come at the expense of the Koreans, in the short term at minimum. That's the reality of it.

There is a third school of thought. Do what Riot does and forcibly split the regions from Korea so that the fans are dumb enough to believe each year that their teams can maybe beat the koreans before being utterly smashed. Rinse and repeat for years.

Works for every other sport in the world, why not SC2. I hear Japan has baseball and it's popular. I bet none of those teams would do well in the MLB. But Japan gives no fucks.

I think comparing that to SC2/e-sports is sort of silly. There are many differences between them that make the comparison pretty invalid.
For starters, the internet community does not care nearly as much about locality. In sports, people often root for their local team (if I lived in Los Angeles, I'd root for Lakers or w/e). There isn't nearly the same amount of representation in e-sports, and people don't even care that much about the representation either. Obviously, people like to root for foreigners (non-Koreans) when vs Koreans, but I think that is more of an underdog phenomenon than anything else.

Also, if I had to guess, I'd say baseball is far more popular in JP than SC2 is, outside of Korea (maybe even globally? I don't have any statistics here)

If we go down that road, comparing anything to anything is silly because they don't line up. The point is that region locking works for a lot of leagues in all forms of competitive everything.

I like the foreign scene as much as the next guy but yeah this really screwed a lot of the best players. People who can't travel and live overseas will retire because they can't make money in a crowded GSL and a lot of Kespa kids will retire as well.

Not in any way shape or form. It only affects WCS itself.

This is for WCS seasons only, if players can be flown out to a foreign tournament they can still go.

No. Just official WCS season tournaments and GSL.

So for players who play in GSL/SPL but still like to go to foreign events a few times a year, nothing changes.

Never cared enough to watch wcs na or eu anyways as KR was the only one that truly mattered.

Hell....it's about time. They attempted a soft lock the second time around, but that was largely insignificant due to the mass amount of koreans already qualified for WCS NA through previous placement. Finally a full reset. Hopefully this will encourage more koreans to join foreign teams, which will in turn raise the skill level of the foreign scene even further.

Well, here you go Americans, you got your "local talent-nurtured league with story lines" at last. And by local talent I mean Polt.

Some of the foreigners who have it made are so fucking entitled. There are Koreans who work far harder, and have far more skill, but see far less success and have way less fans, team support and opportunities, yet foreigners will still act like it is they who are hard done by and should be given easier competition.

Do you have any idea how many Koreans there already are trying desperately to join foreign teams? Who do you think will take them? The latest no-name scammers?

Poor Axiom+...

Well this basically kills my interest in WCS AM. I guess there's still a handful of series to watch... Really sucks as KR is in the one time slot practically impossible for me to watch. I hope the point system somehow accounts for this realignment.

Sick city! I'm glad this finally happened. People talking about Polt dominating ignore that he's had a losing record against both Scarlett and Major as of late and other foreigners have been competitive with him. Violet and Balloon will also both be fun additions to the melting pot that is WCS AM. EU with the mYi and GEM houses (assuming they are able to stay) will also provide good competition in the EU scene. I really really hope they increase the size and prize pool of GSL to accommodate all the extra players that are coming back to Korea, though. There's enough talent in Korea to support it.

I just want to speak up as one of the quiet majority who is looking forward to this change. Obviously it will be a very rough transition, and in the short term will result in korean player retirements and lower WCS stream views, but in the long run this creates the opportunity for their to be a non-korean scene again.

We can still watch competition at the highest level of skill in GSL every day and at the big foreign tournaments throughout the year. There's still more content than anyone with a job can consume every month.
... In life very little goes right. "Right" meaning the way one expected and the way one wanted it. One has no right to want or expect anything.

Yeah, there are barely any quality foreign teams looking for players these days. Shit's tough, even WCS champion's in the case of Pigbaby can't find a team.

Silent majority… you mean your 55% majority that is on the whole way more vocal than the other 45% who are OK with how things went in 2014?

Having a non-korean scene isn't good thing when it sacrifices the korean scene.

Still think this needs to happen though

Also, prepare for walks of text explaining why this the death of SC2 and the korean scene.

That would be accurate no matter what the announcement was. If Blizzard … kept their 2014 policy, and they added season finals back, but made it balanced, and gave a few points to Proleague and a couple fewer points to ATC teams to make it more competitive, and they expanded GSL and gave it more money/points, and Blizzcon was expanded to 24 people, and they sponsored their own SC2 team, and sponsored proleague, and created/funded a minor monthly tournament in each region that only allowed people that didn't make WCS challenger/premier to compete, people would still complain.
