idno if the starbow guys are open to suggestions but I think they should put all their efforts on marketing the game rather than tweaking numbers for perfect balance

it doesn't matter if you have a perfect game if there's no one there to play it

Watching the tournament now. This is my first experience with Starbow, but the slower pace of the game makes it more enjoyable to watch than SC2.

Not really, its akin to old banshee openings vs P in early days of WoL. You got to do some damage, but even if you only kill a few units, it is not game ending. However your observers are going to be late, which means you might have trouble against fast spidermine or two factory type builds.

well im new to starbow and i used reaver opening to a terran who rushed banshees with cloak. He died to my reavers and two zealots and called me an all-in user. I was just really curious whether reaver opening into 7min nexus was all-in or not. thank you

Because reaver openings allow you to block rushes while putting on pressure, they're quite a safe opening. Opening reavers before nexus is a little more dangerous because it will delay your third sufficiently to give Terran a strong 2 base timing, or enable them to get a third more safely since you'll have less units with your later third.

There are many variations though. Reaver with no goon range is quite risky. Reaver with shuttle speed before nexus is much more dangerous since your economy is very slow. 1 gate range nexus into reaver is quite safe and strong, but can have problems vs 2 factory or other quick timings since you get your additional gates slower.

Reaver will always delay your third, but can enable you to stop pushes from the Terran more easily by harrassing his push as he moves out, so the lost economy often doesn't matter.

If you don't deal damage with the reavers, it's not ideal, but if you expanded quite fast behind them, it's not a big deal since it makes your third quite safe.


P.S An actual all in variant that's quite strong, especially with the new patched reavers, is 1 gate goon range, proxy robo, then while your reaver is building send the goons and the shuttle to his main and elevator the goons into his main, then follow up with the reaver. Can auto win vs most 1 rax cc builds.

SB has been free to play ever since Arcade became free to play. And yeah we did for a bit. Popularity/ladder numbers have recently gone down, but with the Starbow Ladder Cup today there have been more people online than usual.

Patch for 31st of March

Bugs:
  • Fixed a bug that made it impossible for corsairs to damage lifted buildings.

General:
  • Added new unit pathing while the units are moving. Units will now slowly move away from each other while moving. Idle unit spread removed.

Zerg:
  • Scourge moment speed decreased to 3.5. Corsairs are 3.48.
  • Hydra turn rate decreased to 500. (This makes the hydralisk use a split second to turn around).
  • Dark Swarm cloud duration increased from 20 sec to 30 sec.

Protoss:
  • Photon cannon weapon speed decreased from 1.75 to 1.5. Chrono boost still adds + 50% (from 1.167 to 1).
  • Stalker damage changed:
    - Old: 8 dmg vs all and 12 dmg vs light and shields.
    - New: 12 dmg vs light and shield, 9 dmg vs medium, 6 dmg vs armored.
  • Corsair Disruption Web is no longer a "channel" ability. Corsairs starting energy amount increased from 50 to 75. Max energy increased from 100 to 150. Cast energy remains the same at 100.

Terran:
  • New vulture micro added. They are now slightly more difficult to handle, but can still kill an infinite amount of speedlings if microed correctly.
  • Scan at Orbital Command now requires engineering bay.


Explanations
We've felt that Hydralisk busts have been heavily dictating the flow of ZvP for a while now, forcing the Protoss to respond with a lot of cannons and speed Zealots. Whilst we don't think that they're unbeatable, nor do we want to make them unviable, we feel a cannon buff will give Protoss a little more breathing room in the early game, opening up the options to tech to a faster robotics, stargate or templar archives after a forge expand. The hydra turn rate also makes "studder step" vs zealots a tad worse. May encourage the "hydra dance micro" from Starcraft 1 more.

Also if we were to have a 100% BW photo cannon it would have 1.37 weapon speed, so we feel this is a good compromise.

Stalkers were very much dominating PvP. We've tried to make the Stalker worse vs Dragoons while keeping them good vs mutalisk and decent vs hydralisks. They are still very good in PvP and may continue to dominate the match up, but hopefully this will make it easier for people to explore other strategies.

Disruption web was still very underused and while the channel added some interesting micro, it just seemed too hard for players to use. It may return if this version is too good. Now also, with full energy you should not need to wait so long until you can cast a second disruption web.

The new pathing gives an added layer of natural defenders advantage. All who have tested it feels it is better than the old idle spread.

Things we are looking into:
  • New version of abduct. Was almost ready for this patch.
  • Terran bio, especially marauders, firebats and ghosts. We will try to make a suggested ghost which may replace the marauder and add a test-map of it to get some player feedback.
  • Firebats / Marauder too good vs lurkers. See above.
  • Terran macro mechanics (overcharge + reactor combo) being potentially too strong.


Please provide feedback with the issues we are looking into.

Aww man. I like all the changes except disruption web. It is OK to have things that serve a niche purpose but are rarely used. In fact, those things are what make certain games memorable. If every unit and every ability is used "often," it makes the game stale and dull.

I mean after 10 years of BW with queens almost NEVER being used, how awesome was seeing queen strats break godly mech lines? Keep the channeling. Make disruption web an interesting but difficult strategy that would wow a spectator if they saw it.
