Woongjin Star's (Z)Soulkey defeated (P)CJ_Sora 3 - 1 in the StarCraft 2 finals of WCG 2013 to claim the gold medal. With the win, Soulkey claimed the thirteenth consecutive StarCraft/StarCraft 2 title for South Korea.

Additionally, Korea claimed a full sweep of the gold, silver and bronze for the first time in StarCraft 2, with (P)Sora and (P)SKT_PartinG placing second and third respectively. China's (P)iG.Jim had a chance to break the Korean monopoly on two occasions, but losses to Soulkey and PartinG saw him finish in fourth.

Prize Money
1st - Soulkey: $30,000
2nd - Sora: $15,000
3rd - PartinG: $7,500

Still, Jim put up a good fight against Soulkey. And Parting? Well, it seems only Sora can give him a run for his money.

Wow why didn't I watch this T_T. I hope you can get the replays! Or at least the VODs...I want to steal some Soulkey knowledge.

Soulkey is probably Zerg player of the year. Sorry Jaedong, but you can of course rest easy on your 5 starleagues.

Bah I'm so eager to watch the VODs and they are not up yet. Come on! I know it finished like 30 minutes ago but still. Can't they have these things on auto file?

Korean taking top 3 followed by Chinese and Taiwanese. Sounds about right for a WCG.

So from the three major tournaments this weeked - Dreamhack, IEM and WCG - we have had three champions + Show Spoiler +

This came out of the blue. Like, I didn't even know this was going on. Was there coverage on TL that I overlooked or something? But very happy for SoulKey though.

You know I could say the same thing for many other tournaments and special events. :V Whatever and I really hope Blizzard starts listening to some of my ideas soon and given my past history in Brood War? I have knack for building contenders. At the very least the foreigners can become more competitive given the outline. Whatever they decide to do with it is another thing.

Yeah I feel like if you want to be considered "the best" for a time period, you have to have at least 1 championship in a league (GLS/WCS Korea) along with a few weekend championships.

TL has it listed as a premier tournament, but looking at that list of premier tournaments this year, it is clearly not even close to being on the same level.

Yeah. a ro16, ro32 and qualifying for Premier are pretty good results for someone like Life.

lol Sad thing is guys like Leenock fall into a similar category when it comes to the WCS in Korea. Soulkey did waaay better than the other guys.

Just because someone lists something as a premier tournament doesn't make it so. It's completely subjective. If i dared to look up Red Bull I bet your ass someone would list it under premier when it couldn't be further from the truth. When in my opinion, they're special events and we have plenty of those. There was a time when WCG would be considered a premier event back in BW, but it most certainly isn't now and hasn't been for some time.

TL has it listed as a premier tournament, but looking at that list of premier tournaments this year, it is clearly not even close to being on the same level.

Just because someone lists something as a premier tournament doesn't make it so. It's completely subjective. If i dared to look up Red Bull I bet your ass someone would list it under premier. When in my opinion, they're special events and we have plenty of those.

Would WCG KR have been more difficult than WCG?
[/i][/i]
Certainly it would have! The only difference between that tournament and WCG finals was that players like Albion, Demigod, and Zerth were replaced by players like Innovation, Rain, and Curious.

One minute to midnight with scarlett in the same group as luci elfi and jjakji, AND JD Life INno in the waits, this does not bode well

I can see Scarlett getting first in her group, she can beat all three of those players pretty easy in my opinion (Bomber > jjakji), and if she does get first, she would have to face probably Stardust (who I think she can beat, even though her ZvP is not great), and then face a tough opponent. I don't really see her not getting top 4 here, given these circumstances and no edits done to bracket layout.
I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

Nice by soulkey. Didn't watch the games but heard that he was losing 2-1 to Jim at one point but to see him come back and win whole thing is nice. Sora also beating Parting 3-1, someone who I believe called him easy was great to see especially after Parting said Sora was easy or something in his last interview!

Jim could have won against Soulkey if only those three games were 3 straight up 3 base timing attacks. He won 2 games not by 2 base all in.He won securing 3-4 bases and with superb unit composition.Im really disgusted at how he threw last 2 games with 2base allins when he knew it doesnt work against Soulkey's caliber.

That's really a joke. Life never win any wcs events and never win Soulkey.

He was completely unsuccesful in WCS.

This is incorrect

I like how Soulkey gets in the backdoor because Innovation decided to give up his spot and then SK wins the whole thing.

Soulkey is the only top zerg I can recall that uses swarmhosts properly. They got him this championship.

And Jim just might be the best foreigner.

Woah... holy shit is this true? This is the first time Koreans have won all podium spots? That just seems... unlikely.

He said Starcraft 2, so it just means that a foreigner grabbed a podium spot in 2011 and 2012.

Also there are only 3 Koreans at each WCG, so it just means one upset has to happen.

In Broodwar it was

2010: Flash, Kal, Jaedong on the Podium
2009: Jaedong, Stork, Bisu in the Top 3
2008: Luxury, Stork, Strelok (1 upset)
2007: Stork, PJ, Mondragon (amazingly 2 foreigners in the top 3)
2006: oov, July, Midas
2005: FOru, Androide, Legionnaire (2 foreigners yaaay!!)

SC2
2012: Parting, Adelscott, MacSed
2011: mvp, xigua, Kas

so yeah, definitely massive korean domination in broodwar.

SC2 has seen some more foreigners in the top 3 but no win.
and it seems to be a much more korean dominated trend.

Well in 2007 Pj > sAviOr but Stork beat Hwasin so 1 upset.
in 2008 Stork 2:1 Jaedong in Round of 8 so no upset here.
in 2005 Androide famously beat Silent_control but round earlier Silent_control > XellOs so 1 upset.
in 2004 Midas 2:0 fOru in Round of 8 so there was no upset even though the 3rd/4th match was Christian > Androide
in 2003 it was best year for foreigners as FiSheYe was leading 1-0 in the grand final before loosing 2-1. It was the only time that foreigner had a match point in final of WCG. Integerstingly enough Grrrr... won 3rd place by beating Control from Korea and HellGhost from Brazil won with H.O.T-Forever 2-0 (!). What's even more interesting in group stage each korean finished second.
in 2002 blackman was 3rd after beating essay (korean) who beat starsin. And as there was double elimination at the time Elky eliminated starsin while YellOw beat essay. So there were actually two upsets in the brackets and some more in group stage (Boxer was first but with 5-2, Starsin second with 6-1, Essay first with 6-1, YellOw perfect 7-0).
in 2001 Elky finished second beating gorush in looser's bracket final. Interestingly enough GoRush ended in lower bracket because of ElkY so it was actually 2-0. On the other hand BoxeR went 3-0 against ElkY. Worth to note that two koreans fell in group stage - Gundam went 3-2 loosing to Elky and Nazgul.
finally in WCGC 2000 koreans went 1,2 and 4 with NTT taking 3rd place but from what I discovered NTT lost twice to Bassy in group stage (apparently) before taking him down in double elimination bracket's looser's semifinal. Another korean - RandomParkSa - fell to two germans: Rookie and Kalaschni.

So all in all between 2001 and 2003 foreigners were close to taking WCG (with FiSheYe being closest) and later on Pj and Androide made miracle runs despite foreigners declining in general.

Technically I could say there were many more. I watched what I could. I missed all of IEM and the WCG, but I did check back to read about the results regularly. I got a chance to see Navi play Alliance and I saw what I could when it came to DH Winter. Caught a little League on the side as well. Lots of folks don't focus on just one game these days.

The funny rumor about Blackman, was that he trained only vs specially scripted AI, because he didnt have net in home. Also i think i remember reading about Blackman somewhere in Polish press or watching in TV after his WCG run. WCG 2002 was around the time when i got my internet, i was cheering for Elky because he looked so cool in sunglasses. But damn Boxer killed them all. Dat Boxer

Yes. It was pretty poor quality actually... it seemed blurry and washed out. LOTS of downtime between matches where they didn't let you know what was going on... just generic filler clips. Also they had only one solo caster for the finals. I wasn't impressed.

Quality of the competition was great though.
