Same. This format is just what the scene needed.

Yeah, he nailed it for me. This is going to be really fun to watch.

Honestly the best way to think about it is like this:

Weekend tourneys are not affected.
GSL and OSL are not affected, other than they are working their schedules around each other and have new casting/broadcast partnerships.
Team leagues are not affected.

GSL and OSL are collectively WCS KR.
MLG is making an "American GSL" for Americans. This is WCS NA.
ESL is making a "European GSL" for Europeans. This is WCS EU.

WCS KR, WCS NA and WCS EU provide players for WCS Finals. There are three WCS finals, corrisponding to three WCS seasons. Think of these like GSL seasons.

Getting good results in the WCS finals gives you points.
Additionally, other events like Dreamhack, Iron Squid and NASL, will also give you points.

Top 16 in points after 3 WCS seasons are invited to the WCS Grand final are Blizzcon at the end of the year.

All of the WCS KR, NA, and EU content will be broadcast free for 720p, every day.

Q: What happens to OSL qualifiers/dual tournament system?

Mr. Chae: Code A/DualTournament/etc have been combined into the "challenger league." It format is the same as Code A/Up-Downs.

Mr. Chae: The qualifiers into the challenger league will be the same format as old Code B.

Care to explain?

As well he should, because even if the format (which appears at face value to be pretty solid) becomes convoluted or has a rough start as a new tournament, Blizzard is actually investing in our e-sport and working with the leagues and organizations. They're taking StarCraft 2 seriously.

Blizzard has learned a lot these past few years.

Q: Korean players might have trouble earning WCS points in OSL/GSL. They might compete in EU/NA and sweep those regions. What do you think?

Mike Morhaime: We expect this will happen to some degree, and it will ahve a positive impact on the rest of the world. .

This is all pretty exciting. Can't wait to see everything start.

And what was the deal with GSL/OSL being casted on OGN? Is that what's happening? If so, very exciting. The added exposure will make it a little easier for teams to acquire larger sponsors.

How about soccer? A pretty popular sport in Europe. A lot of countries have thriving national leagues, but many get smashed in champions league. Seems like it could work very well.

I hear ya, but I think we lack the intermediary motivation - no one wants to fight for their country in SC2. And it's a mistake to not be open to include existing and new LAN players.

Actually no, GSL is still having the other three seasons this year, but OSL is taking the place of WCS in the second season.

There was an article posted today that they are having 4 seasons. It seems like they just wont all be WCS events. They need 4 finals for the Hot6 Cup (the new blizzard cup thing)

Only thing I dislike : still a lot of online play.
Online play is so hard to hype now. Look only at how TSL4 kinda flopped.

if there isn't a Code A or Code S, I mean they are placement titles.

there will always be an S class and an A class because that has always been used to tell the skill of a player.

i am not sure what their goal is. Isolating the scenes might bring advantages like local training houses, but the problem lies more in the special society than anything else. European e-sport-player will never be treated like popstars like in korea, especially since they wont win much in this tournament.

And the price pool looks like they were thinking of the international, with the difference that the situation is totally different. TI was a tournament to promote a niche-game that wasnt played seriously but had the potential by bringing a price pool that would attract teams of similar games. Sc2 doesnt have rivalizing games, it is the only 1vs1 rts alive and is fairly well known in the esport-scene. It also is found out pretty fast thanks to a way bigger player pool at the highest level and the fairly slim amount of options.

having the BWC in China last year is kind of hilarious now, they don't even get to do WCS this year.

The stars themselves are not region restricted. You don't have to watch only English players if you live in England.

Exactly as in this new tournament format for SC2 where Korean stars can train in NA or EU. The only difference is that teams can split up over different regions in SC2.

I like Morheim's point. That if Koreans are competing year round in NA/EU, those players will have to raise their skill level to compete. Makes everything just a bit more exciting.
