The designs for the new protoss units are such fail. The only thing I'm excited about is being able to teleport my army around the map with mass recall. They made me more excited by removing a unit than adding any of the ones they did. How can Blizzard be so out of touch?

It just doesn't work in this game.

Terran need vikings to counter both Void Rays and Collosus, so you'll always have them and the same goes for Corrupters/Zerg. Carriers just get owned by both of them, so I can't see what they could possibly change to make it work, ATA will own them every time. They're removing it for now to try and see if they can fix it.


This. Also, the cost and build time made them very hard to get onto the battlefield in sufficient numbers. It was a good unit... sometimes. Blizzard had a choice: revamp the carrier, or just add some new stuff. I think they made the right choice. Not only because expansions should have new units, but because they explicitly stated that the carrier is gone FOR NOW. It could make a comeback after it gets some work done to it.

Honestly I'd have a lot more to say about the new units if it weren't for the fact that Browder already said on record that they're looking for cool looking units rather than having any interest in balancing the game or making it genuinely competitive and interesting.

It's just kind of hopeless to make any criticisms at this point.

It's hard for me to be super critical of them. Since we haven't played with any of this stuff yet, how could we possibly know how it will all play out? I have faith that they will find a good amount of balance. And if they don't, the ladder will be chaos until they fix things.

i cant see how a replicant fits the protoss race. they are supposed to have the superior technology, why should they coppy stuff from zerg or terran?

i think a group of 12 year olds could do a better expansion then those meatheads at blizzard, i mean, seriously?

they don't have to remove it to fix it. just keep it in the game. it can't hurt. maybe the tempest will make it even more viable because it's a decent counter to the viking. i'm not trying to argue the reasons why carriers are useless, i'm just trying to understand the necessity of removing useless units.

I think the high Gas cost on the new Protoss units takes into the fact that Protoss will be able to sustain much more of their army than usual due to Mass Recalls on Nexus.

Due to Mass Recall, a Protoss player in HOTS should be able to save a lot more units, reducing the need to spend gas on things like lost sentries due to failed offensive pressure, and also have a much easier time keeping expansions alive thanks to using Mass Recall defensively. Imagine you spot a drop heading toward an expo, you can mass recall a few Templars or even a small portion of your main army to defend it if you were caught with your pants down.

Although it might not have a huge impact, not having to rebuild 5-6 Sentries, a bunch of Stalkers and a Colossus or two due to saving them at clutch times might drop your average gas expenditure by a good 1-2k

Thats pretty fair actually, I didn't think of it like that, the Tempest looks pretty sexy though, don't know how useful it will actually be, the recall on nexus will be really good, now toss wont ever worry about drops or making bad engagements ever again basically just like terran.
Banelings are like Ice Climbers if they grab you... your dead.

So the mothership didn't work as a-move super unit and they changed the thor, because of that, wtf?

If they wanted to they could've removed the spells and buffed the mothership attack and durability, what a shitty reasoning...

A unit like that is simply designed for silly team/bronze games, not for actually competitive gameplay, so it's really not that big of a deal imo. Let the bronzies have their fun and thor rush every game, it doesn't change anything at the high levels, but it can make casual/low league players enjoy the game a bit more.
ModeratorProtoss all-ins are like a wok. You can throw whatever you want in there and it will turn out alright.

He also says somewhere (maybe in this interview or another; I don't remember) that Terran may not get any new multiplayer units for HotS, because they're already too flexible.

I think that was probably Browder's personal wish for the sake of the game, but the Marketing department probably didn't approve.

Have faith. If there are glaring balance issues by the time HOTS is released they will be fixed (eventually)...The best blizzard can do in the design phase is try to add cool things; you need widescale testing and competitive play to work out balance, that's pretty hard to do in alpha.

Actually the mothership is used late game to deal with broodlords.
And there is no problem balancing a unit to be useful for very late game in pro games, they just gave a rather absurd reasoning for the mothership removal and the thor "replacing" it.

Yeah, but that was not blizzards intention for it; they stated that they kept units like the mothership and the carrier ingame because they wanted lowbies to have fun with it. I agree it's silly, but as long as the new thor is just a single, amove unit, i don't think game balance is going to be affected. Time will tell though.

Protoss gateway units have a hard time against Barracks units, but not against Factory units, so it makes perfect sense to fix the Hellion so Factory units work well against gateway units as well. Nevermind that gateway units were cost ineffective against Terran in the first place...
