I agree, but I really don't know its purpose. It seems almost harmless, unless it retains the hydra attack... maybe it's just that, an upgraded hydra? I mean, a tier 2.5/3 heavily armored hydra?
Tier 2 --> hydras as they're now: anti-air, timing attacks
Tier 3 --> heavy assault units, high armor and dps
I like the baneling-esque idea, but it looks too big to morph directly from a baneling.
Based on appendix's picture I would say it's a siege-based morph up from the roach, since roaches already use the same type of acid attacks that banelings do. Maybe it behaves just like lurkers did in SC1, shooting acid in a line instead of spines?

My bet, thanks to the contribution that pointed the similarities between the Baneling and this units, would be a Reaver-esque unit. Except that scarab would cost gas.
This would give an awesome dynamic to the fight if the acid-spit animation was slow enough to allow dodging/micro, like in goon/mine fights back in BW.

thats what i'm thinking atm short range acid spitting unit.. basically zerg evolves in the direction that they try to circumvent the siege capabilities of their enemies instead of "I NEEDZ BIGGAR GUN THEN DEM"
what i have in my head right now:
middle size (middle between roach and ultra maybe?) relativly slow above ground normal movement speed (2.25?) underground maybe a bit faster or upgradeable to be faster can only attack above ground weapons: melee and an attack while moving acid spray thingy (bit of aoe, 3-4 range?) that can attack simultaneously pretty tanky (maybe more armor while underground)
basically move in with ling/bling (splash not very good versus them cause of armor hp and size) then when next to the enemy break through the ground and pewpew
edit: and like i said earlier i just dont think (and hope) that zerg does not get a copy of a siegetank would be pretty boring
Terrible paint drawing, yes. But I don't have PS anymore and I don't have anytime to try hard. So ya, a variation of the hydra, and the poise of the creature really makes me think that it burrows with those big claws....lurker isn't out of the question.
