I really just don't understand this. The $2,000 covers the cost. These teams are just completely severing themselves from another avenue to the West and an opportunity to grow their fanbase in the west. Its like they don't understand that the global scene is better than just the Korean scene. How many fans did Puma have before NASL? Look at the fans MMA gained because of MLG.

The teams are limiting themselves and their players and I can't see the players being happy about this.

isnt sc2con being entirely unprofessional atm tho? i dont see that an eye for an eye is a bad thing especially when a company is trying to monopolize the market.... and the competition isnt really into it (NASL)

I don't have a huge problem with this. I'm kind of excited to see the "rest of the world" at their best vs their own. We know even mid level Code S players like Check.Prime tools some of our best. The rest of the world needs to know who is at the top of their heap if they are to be competitive at all in team or international games.

It's not horrible it gives teams the ability to see who the best people would be to recruit.

At least you guys had some nice transparency and came out with the story, sorry to hear that all the Koreans pulled though.

Book months in advance if they don't even know if they will make it to the finals or not? Seems pretty silly to me.

Book in advance for the final?? How would you even know how many will go to the final. Maybe none!

Actually inviting players from NeHoSeo and FXO Korea might be the way to get around it. If these teams don't want to come, let the money go to the people with a bit more common sense.

This is so terrible. Not because the players are Korean and thus automatically make better games but because I was super hyped to watch those Korean players play after they qualified.

I don't understand why SC2CON thought NASL had that kind of a budget in the first place. To get MLG to fly Koreans to their events GOM had to give the same in return. If MLG with 100x the budget of NASL was only willing to send over 4 Koreans per event, what made the team managers think NASL could afford to possibly fly as many Koreans to their final event as MLG does in a whole season?

Does SC2CON make their decisions with the backing of GOM, or is their only form of leverage the fact that they control where their players go?

Who's side is GOM on in this anyways or do they simply mediate with NASL and work their own deals with SC2CON for GSL? It seems if players can unionize to make demands, organizations such as NASL, MLG, GSL can make joint efforts to deter SC2CON teams from making decisions that make me less likely to watch their tournaments.

It's not adding up...

False.

Ganzi, Choya, and other non-invitees like Alicia, were paid for by their own team sponsors aka SlayerS and FXO (and FXOBoss has stated that the cost to gain benefit ratios are slim, and that's why he's not sending any koreans to Raleigh, but will for Orlando). These teams have large enough sponsorships and money to be able to pay their own way through. Also, this doesn't include the prior frustrations regarding scheduling of matches for Koreans.

DRG didn't pay for it himself the first time, he was part of the MLG/GSL exchange, so him, boxer, MVP, and MMA were paid for by that system.

In this next MLG where DRG wasn't invited, but will be attending, he's being paid for by Complexity not team MVP probably.

Remember, that outside of SlayerS, FXOKorea, and IM, I don't think most of the Korean teams make very much from their sponsors. oGs and Prime have local fried chicken sponsorships that probably just help cover living expenses to run their pro houses. MVP as far as I know has no sponsor as a team (they don't wear anything), Zenex likewise doesn't have a big sponsor. Startale has some level of sponsorships as seen by their patches on their clothing, but are probably in the same boat as oGs and Prime's sponsorship levels. TSL was the only clan that had fully salaried workers in them, and 2 out of the 3 of them left the team which probably terminated the contracts anyways, and TSL has stated that Sangho and Clide gave up their own prize money/salaries to help with the team.

I think people vastly overestimate how "glamorously rich" the korean pro teams are.
I now have autographs of both BoxeR and NaDa. I can die happy. Lim Yo Hwan and Lee Yun Yeol FIGHTING forever!

I think a big reason is due to the Puma fiasco and the sc2con wants to make a statement against it.

We, the foreign fan base, must use our collective economic muscle to crush the SC2Con union. If we want to stop them, then we must stop buy GSL passes and stop supporting Korean teams!

Honestly it won't be hard for me, I think this announcement shows their true colors.

Koreans may all act mannered.... but they are cut throat competitors and negotiators.

They won't respect you if you just let them win.

its amazing the level of entitlement some people have. seeing koreans in the NASL is great and all, but its amazing the level of demands they are willing to make. it also upsets me that NASL bent over backwards so far to help them out in this tournament. you aren't laying a level playing field for europeans and other non-US residents who have to bear their own risk. its unfair to say the least.

DRG was invited and Choya got his ticket as a gift from FXOBoss.

Ganzi and Alicia did get their tickets paid by SlayerS, which is not a part of the SC2con

That said, it still makes me think that there are reasons despite money involved in this decision, mainly scheduling, comunication problems and NASL having a bad live event.

Also, teams with multiple players have diminishing EV from each additional player participating, which is also a factor.

From TSL perspective, for instance, it`s not like they are refusing to earn 50k, it`s more like "yeah, we could expect an overall 5-7k profit from this, with the risk of losing money we don`t even have, dealing with these organization we don`t really know and by forcing most of our players to stay awake super late once a week for the next 2 months".

Plus, it could be that math does add up for them, but that they believe they can have an even better deal anyways.

as much as it doesn't sound fair, maybe NASL should think about paying up more for every player who's going to be in final.

We would love to guarantee a 100% covered cost to every single player. We have a fixed budget, we're a company that is less than 1 year old and we're trying to do great things. We don't have the VC backing and years of events hosted such as companies like MLG (nor do we have the backing of a major corporation like GOMTV).

The offer we made is literally the most we can do with the current budget we have.

You'll end up losing a lot of your viewers tho.

So the question is, is this loss of revenue still less than if you were to fully cover their cost?
Have you considered reducing part of the grand final prize for this?

It would be really unfair to everyone else in the league if we reduced the prize pool just to accommodate Korean players. We can't make money out of nothing, and we can't promise anything we can't guarantee. It would be unfair of us to promise more when we only have a limited budget, then not be able to deliver later.

This is a budgeting management problem then. If you are having trouble with budgets, why are you boasting such a large prize pool? From what the viewers can see, much of the qualities of other departments (production, scheduling, etc) has been sacrificed in exchange for this large prize pool. Yet, you say you're trying to be fair for your players, but how is this fair for the thousands of fans supporting you?

This isn't about money. That has been made clear over and over by people in this thread.

This is about one of a few things:

1) Koreans trying to squeeze out NASL so that GSL remains number 1
2) They're pissed off at the EG/PuMa thing and they don't want that to repeat
3) They're pissed off at the hours of play and don't want to go through it again
4) They hate the tournament format for the finals and think its a waste of time

There may be other reasons, but those are the ones I can think of.

What I don't understand is why they went through the trouble of giving NASL an ultimatum. They clearly had no intention of competing to begin with. NASL has basically agreed to cover all travel costs...

Bah, you're just speculating. You don't know their minds or motives.

Speculation is the only remaining option when what has been announced as the reason doesn't seem quite convincing.

If the decision wasn't political in nature, I'm pretty sure sc2con wouldn't be negotiating and players would just drop out one by one on their own and decide not to apply / play.

Again, speculating about things you dont understand is reckless.

That's the nature of speculation though.

If I did understand them (entirely), then it wouldn't be speculation in the first place.

Yes...and it would just be prudent to wait for someone that knew about the situation to inform you.

We have already been informed. That's what this thread was made for.

Speculating about the suspect bits of information and missing gaps is only natural, especially when it's the most interesting and significant part.
