For the people that say that Puma was not under contract with TSL:
Under the law of many countries, which I am almost sure would include the US, you dont always need a written contract. I am pretty sure that if TSL was to go to court, the fact that TSL provided training facilities, housing, food to Puma would create obligations between the parties.... TSL just decide that it would be too much of a problem doing that, yet it is true. There was an actual contract between the team and Puma, a moral contract. And it is plain bad to break it this way.
In the end, I see a decision this further degrade EG's image within the community. I would have prefered to be a fair exchange/ buy-in, just like in develloped sport ( think soccer/football )

Looks kind of stupid really, who is responsible for that kind of stuff over at EG?
Clearly they had planned to make a statement regarding the acquisition of Puma. We don't know when they had planned to release that statement but most likely it was going to be soon. Regardless the fact that TSL manager Lee decided to bring up the acquisition now that means that the EG statement that wasn't even supposed to be released yet has to be revised. All of that takes time.
Also: reading the last couple of posts makes it clear that we'll receive a statement from EG on Weapon of Choice at 7pm EST. (2 hours from now)

Coach Lee Woon Jae of TSL talked with TeamLiquid, trying to clear up some of the misunderstandings while explaining the situation from his point of view:
"It's not just TSL, but most Starcraft II teams right now run on trust and faith instead of contracts.
I'm sorry, but that's just downright stupid. You should know that stuff like this is going to happen if you don't have contracts. This a business and a full time job for these players. Relying on "trust and faith" is quite idiotic to put it bluntly. Hopefully this is a good lesson to all teams and managers out there. uh, isn't this the exact reason everyone is so angry? It's a prime example of different cultures clashing. The system that the Koreans were using was perfectly fine, "trust and faith" can work in their societal context. Sure, it doesn't have much of a legal anchor, but when working with other korean teams, it didn't need to. Another korean team just simply wouldn't do what EG did. Legally, EG should be in the clear, yes, but they also pissed off a whole lot of Koreans, no doubt this made korean teams rethink the way they're dong things Understood. I get that's where the anger is derived from. But I say again.... this is a business, and should be treated as such. Not contracting players is stupid. They should know that now. It's unfortunate that they were the ones who had to learn the hard way, but life goes on. Just because it's a business shouldn't mean there's no honor or common courtesy involved.
You don't have to like it. That's the way it is.
Let's say you're the manager of EG, and the world's best Terran player (in my opinion, and that of many others) is not currently under contract with a team, and you have to opportunity to make him an offer to be a part of your progaming team. You're telling me that you would risk the deal falling through because you want to be nice?
I don't think EG handled this ideally, but there are good reasons why they didn't.

Thanks to coach Lee for explaining his stance, to be honest I 100% agree with him. Also Milkis on weapon of choice? Yes please.

I don't understand as to why everyone is criticing EG when we only have one side of the story...

Slasher and I approached both EG and Milkis. They had nothing to do with it.
So I would like to take the credit for being business smart... not EG. And the ironic thing is that I was on vacation Sunday so WoC didn't air. I didn't know what I was going to do tonight on WoC (was actually gonna bring miniWHEAT on) then I woke up to this.
Perfect timing if you ask me.

Cause like the TSL coach said in his statement many players where not really bound with any contract to the teams and now, after this "scandal" they want to set those contracts up. And that for me sounds like more professionalism. With contracts, player trading will occure like in any "real" sport and this will push the Sc2 esport scene to a new level.
Sometimes it needs something like this for associations and so on to do something for their system.
Agreed the fact that this will encourage contracts is the silver lining
Personally the whole thing seems legally legitimate but a mean spirited action

Not really. It's relevant to Milkis, but not relevant to this thread. The comments you copied were not made on TL. It's more or less the same as getting angry over comments people make on 4chan or Reddit, and then copying them here and saying "OMG guys stop it".
The problem is he's a 558 poster and saying that to a TL veteran. Don't even pretend that we're going to tolerate that kinda shit on teamliquid. He's a member of the SirScoots fanclub, why am I not surprised?

All the marketing executives of Research in Motion are getting sniped by Samsung (a KOREAN company). As RIM engages in layoffs, weathers investor criticism, and struggles to reassert itself in the mobile industry, the company may be facing something of a brain drain: a senior product manager for RIM’s PlayBook tablet, Ryan Bidan, has jumped ship to Samsung Mobile to service as director of product marketing—at least according to his LInkedIn profile.
The move comes barely a month after RIM’s chief marketing office Brain Wallace left the company for Samsung; that defection, in term, followed only a few months after the departure of Keith Pardy, who had headed up RIM’s BlackBerry marketing efforts. At the time, RIM did not announce a replacement, instead indicating co-CEO Jim Balsillie would be taking on more promotional duties.
The move comes after the lackluster launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook, which has so far failed to meet sales expectations and has generally been greeted with half-hearted reviews that the device simply was not ready for market.
Industry watchers speculate RIM may be in for more high-level defections as the company continues to engage in layoffs. Dissatisfaction within the company seem high; RIM recently had to take the unusual step of publicly responding to an open letter, apparently from a high-level RIM exec, outlining eight steps he or she believed would be critical to turning the company around. The author of the letter claimed to be articulating concerns from a “huge percentage” of RIM’s employee base. When your company is imploding, other companies will come and make offers to your talent. It's just business. How rude of those Koreans!
Not to mention Apple just won 2 huge patent lawsuits against Samsung!!!! Samsung stole the iPhone chipset!!!!!!
Thats bigger than PUMA :D
Cultural jokes aside, honestly, TSL should be upset they lost a great player... but hopefully in a short time they'll realize he just moved on to a more lucrative opportunity. People without money, don't turn down cash offers. He's a young kid, hopefully the adults in TSL management will not begrudge a kid an opportunity. Players in sports move teams all the time, its good for SC2.
The players are the people that need protecting. They are the youngest and the source of talent, frankly, they are FAR more likely to be exploited than vise versa.

I guess I'll just say this is nuts, I definitely want to hear EG's side on WOC later today, but will probably be drinking my ass off to see off my best friend before me moves to Kentucky.
I think this is a positive, though painful, step for western esports. We need to up our game, and whether some of it is artificial growth rather than organic is inevitable. Frankly, EG could REALLY use a Terran of Puma's caliber after already having some great Protoss and Zerg players, I can only hope that with this new member the entire team will get stronger and that lessons will be learned in Korea about taking the status quo for granted.
