Started waaaay back in the beta in the good old bronze league. Played horribly all throughout the beta because I hadn't played Starcraft since when BW came out originally. Slowly worked my way up to gold and then the beta ended.
Picked up Starcraft II at midnight the day it came out and began playing immediately. Went 3-2 and got placed into Silver. Made it up to Gold before I found Day[9] and realized that his commentary could really help me improve. Almost instantaneously got promoted to platinum after becoming an avid Day[9] watcher.
The road to Diamond was not as easy. I would go on fantastic win streaks of 5 or more wins against diamond players and then lose a couple to cheesy builds or stupid mistakes on my part. After over 100 games I started getting really frustrated that I was never going to make it to Diamond. Then one day I played an epic 40 minute TvP that I was convinced I was going to lose. Somehow, someway, I broke though his Colossus ball and he gg'ed and when I returned to the main menu the screen popped up that I had been promoted to diamond. I couldn't believe it and for a moment my jaw dropped and then I got the hugest grin on my face and started laughing and cheering.
I performed very well in my Diamond division, breaking into the top 10 very quick. Then my life outside of Starcraft got much more stressful and complicated. I retreated to starcraft to relax but my mind wasn't focused on the game and I ended up on a 15 game losing streak that dropped me back into platinum. That really lit a fire under my ass. I worked my way back up into Diamond with a week left in Season 1 and grinded my way to #5 in my league before the season ended. I doubt I'll ever go back to platinum again.

Now I agreed with the initial demotion as i was extremely rusty. However at this point I am night and day better then I was when I was in Diamond..yet still stuck in gold.
My MMR is freaking Broken. If it wasn't so insulting to be considered gold league I wouldn't really care. I liked it better when it was just one large ladder in SC:BW and I didn't have to worry about this auto promotion based on god knows what requirements garbage. MMR is fine. If you were good enough to be in a higher league, you would be. I'm not a big fan of people blaming their own lack of skill on "THE SYSTEM, MAN". On topic: I placed into Masters from Diamond the day after Masters league went into play. I'm an average Masters player, learning everyday. Love this game. <3 It isn't a lack of skill, I take on and beat mid diamond players all the time. Most of my friends are high diamond and I beat them half the time. Over 100 games won, winning 4 out of 5 matches, yea sorry something is screwed up. It should of promoted me or..hell demoted me for that matter..Something anything except being stuck in the same freaking league endlessly.
Like I said, if you were good enough to be in a better league, you would be. You're not an isolated case in a massive system, being cheated out of your rightful league. If you keep winning, you'll get promoted. If you're not getting promoted, you're not being entirely truthful about winning all the time. The system isn't out to get you. It's a fair way to gauge your skill. Good luck.

Man, all you guys that don't try hard and are in diamond and masters piss me off so bad lol. I started in bronze and have worked so fricken hard to get into platinum. I wish that I was just naturally good at anything I try. Unfortunately I am disappointingly mediocre.

I was like "yeah I'll make master lol", with my friends. It just seemed like something that was impossible. I have never beat my chest so furiously nor been so excited as when it said I was promoted to Master League :D I don't know why reading this made me so happy. :D:D:D Super congratz!!
Glad to hear my story made your day :D Thanks man!

Played at the start of beta, lost my 1st like 10 games horribly, went 0-10. Then learned to mass marine rush and got into gold. They finally nerfed mass marine but by that time I learned how to constantly make workers and units so I quickly got to platinum (highest league at the time). Then into diamond when it came out.
Masters however came out after I stopped playing solo for like 2 months. So I lost like 3 games in a row trying to get into masters, then gave up. Two months after that I got bored, played another solo game, won it, and was promoted to masters.

Weird. I got my beta key one year ago yesterday. thanks TL!
I don't remember how many wipes I was around for in phase 1, but I worked my way into the highest league for every "season" I played in the beta.
after release: Season 1: I got placed into gold then promoted to diamond and then to master my first win after it was introduced.
season 2: placed into master league

I feel ya.
I started in bronze, a month after release. Lost all my placement matches, wasn't very encouraging. I think 16 games later I finally won one, was ecstatic. Still have the replay saved, a tvp on kulas ravine. Played team games a ton til I got my mechanics and whatnot down. I had no concept of things like build orders, hotkeys, macro, micro, nothing. I just made some stuff and when I felt comfortable attacking I did.
A few day9 dailies later I started laddering a lot, with all the simple concepts mentioned above in the back of my mind. Roughly 30 games later I was promoted straight to gold, skipped silver entirely. Was pretty happy. I was content to sit on my gold status for a while, and went back to team games.
Came back to laddering again later, trying to squeeze in wins here and there, every ladder game backed up with tons of practice against a friend of mine. I remember randomly deciding to ladder at like 4am. Lost 3 games, was about to ragequit, then decided to have one more, because I hate going to bed on a losing streak. One win later, platinum! Never fistpumped as hard in my life.
That promotion gave me the encouragement/motivation I needed to improve enough to get into diamond, which was the highest league at the time. I heard masters league was being introduced in about 2 weeks time, so I decided I wanted diamond while it was still the highest league. 2 days before masters league was implemented, I got diamond. For some reason I was happier with the platinum promotion but the diamond one was pretty awesome too :D
Now I'm just squeezing in games here and there, trying to get to masters. 19th in my division, and I fail hard in TvT lategame, but confident everywhere else. Haven't been matched against masters players, just consistently being matched against top 25 diamonds. If I get to masters I'll be ecstatic c:
Holy crap, talk about a novel. I should get a blog lol.

For some reason I was stuck in bronze for 2 months even though I was playing and beating exclusively silvers/golds. Then the new season rolls around, I play my placement, and BLAM I'm promoted to silver. But I seriously don't get the promotion system. I've played golds that need to be placed in bronze and silvers that are easily the skill level of platinums.

Season 1: Placement > Silver > Bronze > Started watching Day[9] Dailies > Silver > Gold Season 2: Placement > Platinum
That's it for now, can't remember the individual matches, I know I was very very happy when I saw the promoted to Platinum message The funny thing is, even though I am improving, it's just now that I see how bad I was a while back, and still am now (unacceptable macro, meh micro) I thought i was quite good when I was in gold, guess I just didn't have a good enough understanding of how you can macro to realize all those floating minerals in late game weren't good :p

I, on my main Protoss account, started in Silver, got knocked down to bronze then have made my way up to platinum, all taking about 6 months because I actually started playing at the start of November, even though I've owned the game since launch but I get to play very little. My goal is to get to Master league but at this point I'll be happy with diamond, because every time I start playing pure diamonds and masters I somehow get hit with crazy all-inners and my rating tanks so I won't get promoted. I'm going to start playing during the day when I have days off (uni's done but I work 3 days a week now) because I found when I did previously I got way more macro games instead of cheesy garbage. I think it is gonna take a while to get promoted regardless because of how many games I've played.
My second account started out as a guest pass around 4 months ago (I was really bad back then, I still suck but not that bad) where I Bitbybit.Prime rushed my placements, getting into silver and then goofed around and did nuke rushes, which seldom worked. Two weeks ago I bought a key for it and have been playing straight random. I went from silver to top platinum in around a week of playing an hour a day, though I race picked Zerg at first. Yet again, as soon as I play diamonds I got pure all-inners (Crazy stuff like 3rax with a PF in my natural on Shakuras, which you can't really scout because looks like a regular 3rax and is really hard to break out of, or mass mass mass speedlings right after my expo finishes, which I usually can hold). Right now I'm 38th in my platinum division going from 1st.
Also, people are super BM to random players. They tell me to say my race and swear at me if I don't, so I've started saying the wrong race or telling them to scout. I also get cheesed way more than on my Protoss account.

In season 2 I got placed into Diamond after 1 match, lost my first ladder match, and got promoted to Masters.

two acc (me and my brother's)
- me: cheesed with 10pools (ok well, semi rush ;o w/e) for the lulz and then placed into bronze, did a random, got terran, and did a 9rax build to get another quick win against others/etc. stopped playing when gsl started - little bro's acc: cheesed with his, mainly made mass reapers and abused them (>_>)
and so in S2 I started to want to try to be competitive after watching gsl (nasl/ipl/all these fking good tournies out T_T) etc, so I started playing again,
- placement S2 my acc: bronze -> silver (won against a silver protoss....that did a failed 4gate into a 6gate on one base....) - placement S2 bro's acc: ( I play on his acc now): bronze -> gold (lost vs a silver protoss...did this game before my own placement ;o, he went 3gate robo and then tried to contain me, and I was like "uhhh wait what am I supposed to do" and was like "uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" and forgot to get my 3rd and such -____- then played against a gold zerg and won that game
right now just trying to do practice games, and reading info before I REALLY go back laddering..
aka: S1(Bronze) -> S2(Silver) S1(Bronze) -> S2(Gold)
on two diff acc
idk.

I first started in COPPER when I got my beta key, and then i learned more about the game.
Upon release of the game, I DT rushed my way to gold, and 4gated my way to diamond. Then I learned how to play other strats, and got to the top of my diamond division trying to break into masters.
Second season, I lost my first placement match and got moved up to Masters. Really happy about that, but then I lost 30 games in a row and got moved back to diamond.

5-0 placements to Plat. Got Diamond later that day with 17-7 or something. I think I was onebasing a lot of people to death. Played 1 game to get into Master and Grandmaster when they each came out. Probably back out of Grandmaster now due to inactivity, haven't played a lot lately :0
I wish I had a story to tell in there. Hardest part was when I was sitting around 1k diamond (when that was... rank 150ish in SEA) and just kept getting cheesed down whenever I thought I was gaining rank. Ended up finding some practice partners and playing a fuckload of custom games, and getting hugely more confident in my gameplay (plus, we ended up forming a clan).
Really burnt out with regards to ladder now, play very few games (hence dropping back out of GM)... I think I don't have the 250 wins portrait still, just a lot of custom games.

Made silver way back in the beta and was platinum for all of it (When Plat was the highest league) Then made Diamond a week after it was released (still in beta.) I was pretty much Diamond straight from release and onwards, getting masters after a few weeks of actually trying.
Made masters last season, and then from playing at a LAN + tilting, I went on a crazy losing streak + mass disconnects and got demoted to diamond in season two. I tried to get much better to get back into Masters (going 40-20) Then, I got 2v2 masters with my best friend which was great.
|
I started playing a week and half before the season change. I got placed in bronze and when season 2 started I got promoted to silver. Then, today, after what felt like several weeks of constantly getting "teams even" against high gold opponents, I finally made the jump into gold.
It was weird, because for at least a week, I was expecting the promotion after every single win. But it never came. As soon as I stopped thinking about the promotion, there it was.

Haven't played for like 6 months, I was low diamond before I started again like 5-6 days ago and got promoted to masters lol¸
Doing stupid shit like 15 nexus vs zerg, lots of 1 gate expand PvT and adelscott's in PvP, I don't 4gate but when im pissed off at getting PVP 8 times in a row (Im dead serious, 8 PVP in a row) I do some korean 4gate, impressing how that cheese still works at mid masters.
|
welp....
The only rts background I had was playing random use maps in BW, so i knew what the races were and some of the zerg units lol.
I started out in beta copper or wood, or whatever the lowest was, and just kinda messed around, and I think i settled on zerg simply cos i was the most familiar with that race. I think I ended up getting placed into diamond when the game came out, but got demoted to plat, and was forever plat for a while. Now I'm forever diamond, and I've pretty much given up on getting promoted haha.

Coming from a Warcraft III background:
Got my beta key in early March and was placed into Bronze after placements (back when Copper was the lowest tier). After a week or so and adjusting to the economic difference between the two games I was able to get to Silver and then Gold later that night. After the next reset I placed into Gold and got into Platinum shortly after that. Whenever the patch came out that introduced Diamond, I was able to get into that after a week or so of that patch. And then I pretty much stayed there.
I didn't really play in phase2 so when the game actually game out I placed into Gold for my placements. By the end of the night I was in Diamond and I have been stuck there ever since. I am 99% sure that if it wasn't for PvP I would have been in Master's a long time ago...

Started in bronze not even knowing what hotkeys were, I proceeded to cannon rushed my way to silver. From there a guy taught me a 3 gate blink stalker build I refined and went from silver, to gold, to platinum. Then in platinum I learned how to macro/micro and do different builds. After about two weeks of practicing in platinum I got promoted into diamond.
