I got placed in silver but i was matched against gold and platinum pretty much from the start. Eventually i ended up getting diamond opponents which weirded me out as i was still in silver. Then after 4 or so losses i got promoted straight to platinum, skipping gold. From then on pretty normal, went to diamond a season later and then i stopped playing as much so i've been in diamond ever since.

I was in bronze/silver for a pretty long time, but my friend got the game and we started playing a lot of 2v2s. When I went back to playing 1v1s I jumped pretty quickly to platinum, and since then I focused only on 1v1. Im now high diamond, been knocking on masters door for a while now

I've been in gold for pretty much my entire "career" of starcraft until this season. After a week of not having internet (moving) I had this renewed interest and just started playing game after game after game, for hours on end. I was winning a lot of games, until this smurf-er left the game immediately and gave me a platinum promotion. :D

started silver late 2011 after taking a long break from 2010 and finally made it to masters

I began playing SC2 multiplayer thinking that 6 pool was my own invention. That is how skewed my perception was. Regardless, I 6 pooled through all my placements and got placed in gold. I quickly got demoted to bronze, as 6 pooling without any planned transition is, well, bad. I was bronze for three weeks or so, until one game where I attacked the SCV building the barracks with my scouting drone... he said "stop that," followed by "you're annoying," and then he just _.left the game._ Then I got silver. I was all like "OH EM GEE SILVER1111," and I remained in silver for about a week. It was then that I discovered the 4 gate. Enthralled, I switched from zerg to protoss.
I 4 gated every game I played in silver, and I quickly got promoted to gold, then plat. It was then that the first WG nerf happened, and seeing as that noticeably decreased the 4 gate's effectiveness, I decided to switch back to zerg and try and play macro.

I quickly fell back to silver, and clawed my way back to plat after a month upon discovering the R button. I stayed in plat for *five seasons.* five. I had hit a brick wall, and I didn't know why. Confused yet still persistent, I scoured the interwebs for unit compositions and openings because the R button just wasn't cutting it anymore. It was then that I became acquainted with ling baneling in ZvT, roach hydra in ZvP, and roach infestor in ZvZ. After gaining some idea of what the hell I was doing, I got into diamond.

I thought "omg. diamond. I did it. I just did the hardest thing in the universe." Of course, my mechanics were still shit, and that became readily apparent as I faced opponent after opponent who simply had way more shit than me. During this time, I focused on actively improving my macro and nothing else. I did this by making almost nothing but roaches midgame in every matchup, paying attention to upgrades, creep spread, and overlord spread. I was amazed! I was first in my division, facing mostly masters players after focusing on just mechanics. I was rolling over terran bio with endless waves of upgraded roaches and I finally understood what people were talking about when they said macro is all that matters below diamond. Then, a couple months ago, it happened. The blue star appeared on my screen after i ragequit to a mothership with energy. I was masters. At that moment, I finally understood why people said things like "I'm just a crappy mid master." Because I still suck.
Such is the beauty of this game. There is near infinite room to improve :D

I was #6 in my league when season ended won my placement and got demoted. Been #1 in my league ever since ^^
Lost my other placement matches on purpose and got to stay in those leagues ;-)

Friend was trying really hard for a long time to get diamond 1v1. Patch 1.5 was released people got more lag and he quickly got promoted ;-)

Was getting matched against diamonds pre-1.5, but 1.5 made it unplayable for me

3 days ago, finally install sc2 on newer computer, start laddering again. Lose 6 games in a row, win 1, promoted to diamond :D

Bought the game at release and did the campaign, but my computer chugged and couldn't handle online. Shelved it and just played Xbox games for 1.5 years. Fast forward to this February and I was convinced into playing again by a friend. Got placed into Gold in February-March and then took shit seriously during the summer. Went from Platinum to Masters this season.

So I started playing after I saw Dreamhack Winter 2010 (I think it was) where I saw Naama VS Naama, both Finnish. It was so fun to watch so I started playing after the tournament, where I got into Gold league. I kept playing after since... where my leagues have been gold in the first two seasons, now I play in diamond which just suits me fine. Fun matches, not anything super fancy (like master).

I was placed in bronze on day one, never played RTS in my life. So I did what any smart gamer did, I 2 gated my way to plat. Then I started playing macro demoted to gold and then I got used to macro and got back up to plat then diamond then I stopped caring about rank and just focused on improving thigns like probes and pylons with no blocks now im mid masters. The End.

I was promoted to Masters a few nights ago after working my way up all the way from Bronze. I started in Season 4, don't know what season its called now since they changed all the names. I started off playing 3v3's with two buddies, one played Zerg and one played Protoss so naturally I chose Terran and just kind of stuck with it. I've always been a competitive gamer, even playing in some low to mid tier leagues in games like Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2, and Heroes of Newerth, so I decided to get good at 1v1's in SC2. I didn't play a TON, but I never gave up either. Between looking up builds/strategies, analyzing replays, and just gaining insight through experience, I managed a promotion every season, and got 2 promotions one season (Bronze to Gold). I thought about making a Bronze to Masters guide, but it's already been done and I'm not a very good teacher/author. The best tips I can give to improving is to push aside your nerves and LADDER, try to have fun with it. Analyze replays, see what your opponent is doing, see what you could do better, learn timings, figure out how you can react to what you see.

Also, for fun, when I was promoted to Diamond I decided to save and keep track of all my games (excluding games where the opponent left at the start). It took me 168 games to get from Diamond to Masters, these games will span from part of last season to this season. Also note, I was promoted to diamond JUST after the hotly debated Zerg buff was implemented.

168 Games Total: 92W - 76L = 55% Winrate
67 Games TvZ : 27W - 40L = 40% Winrate
53 Games TvP : 34W - 19L = 64% Winrate
48 Games TvT : 31W - 17L = 65% Winrate

I just thought it would be interesting to share my experiences with the current meta of SC2 over the past couple months. I came up with my own TvP build that suits my playstyle which definitely helped my winrate in that matchup. TvZ is difficult =p, and TvT I understand pretty well.

Anyways, I finally reached my goal of Masters and I'm really happy. I've been thinking about making a new goal of reaching top 8 Masters but that will probably be even more difficult than going from Bronze to Masters lol. Good luck to anyone trying to reach their promotion goals!

Sorry to bump this, but I can't help myself, I'm just way too excited.

I played a platinum zerg on Daybreak. I opened phoenix, did some damage and got a third. He rushed hive and proceeded to turtle into the broodfestor ball. I got angry and went for mothership+carriers and double cybercore for upgrades with a fourth (and later fifth) base. I held back till he attacked and then slaughtered him. It felt so great.

Now I'm diamond, which is a massive surprise for me, as I wasn't able to beat too much of diamond players. But who am I to judge the MMR system

. Silver in january, diamond in september. Woooo!! :D

Lost my placement match to a mid-masters. no promotion for me T___T
I was pretty disheartened after this but for some reason kept playing.
Lost another game.

I've never been promoted in 1v1. Diamond since release (I was Plat in beta I think before they removed copper league).
However I have been promoted from Diamond to Master in team games plenty of times.
To be fair I've only played around 100 1v1 games total.

Mid-high diamond here. Was platinum for 2 seasons My pvt is by far my best matchup, it's pvp and pvz holding me back. PvP I just can't get used to at all, and I always make the wrong decisions - i.e always making units thinking they're gonna attack, always expecting 4gates etc. PvZ I am now exploring various 2 base all in options - and my winrate is rising because of it. Felt really good after getting promoted to Diamond after a close PvP where I went blink stalkers vs a stargate opening. Starting to get the hang of PvP and PvZ now, so hopefully I can progress from there. I can/have beaten masters terrans before, so I think if I nail my pvp and pvz I can get masters in a few months.
