When I first hit starcraft 2, I had no idea what zerg, protoss let alone terran was. I had no experience with the entire starcraft playstyle, scene, lore or anything of that kind.
I didn't know about queen mechanics, about mules or chronoboost, hell I didn't even know any of the units, buildings or how armor/damage was calculated within this game.
To make it even worse: I was used to warcraft 3: You put down one barracks(orc), and then go for a bestiary and an altar, and move out with a super tiny unit group, micro your way to victory. I played warcraft 3 extremely competitively
Needless to say, I tried that same approach with starcraft 2. I did pick up zerg almost instantly, they appealed me most. I kep getting insulted by my opponents for doing "all-in" strategies.. I had no clue at all x). I'd have a few slowlings and I even tried to move a queen out on the map and was wondering why she was so ridiculously slow.
I figured she must be some kind of powerhouse siege unit..
My league history went like this:
2011 season 1 -> Platinum (This was a huge mistake, seeing how I was actually bronze material) 2011 season 2 -> Platinum ( I went from Bronze -> silver -> gold -> platinum this season alone, getting a hang of the game) 2011 season 3 -> low diamond Then we moved out.. 2012 season 3 -> Top 1 diamond Current: Masters league (mid)
I had a 50 hour a week job + college on the side, so my time was extremely limited. Nowadays I am hanging around in masters league with my own strategies and such. I don't really copy anything other than the absolute basics.
You might say "You played Wc3 competitive! how come you suck so much at sc2", well sc2 is a macro oriënted game, where everything but the exact basics ( movement/unit control) is completely different.
Wc3 = 5 units on mining, a few cutting wood, you can forget about increasing eco right now. sc2 = 16 - 24 per base mining, 3-6 per base on gas, and keep expanding till you have 80 drones. wc3 = small army + micro + interesting compositions sc2 = bulk armies, attack too soon with too little eco, is often GG.
And having to learn all units and races and match-ups from scratch was a huge deal for me as well. Tried both protoss as zerg and finished the campaign to get a feel for it. I eventually stuck to zerg.

I remember when diamond was the only league I quit before "masters" was introduced. When I came back I lost a game, and got promoted haha

well, I never played any RTS game online, only playing the campgain , so when i got sc2 I said to myself " I might give it a try - how bad could it be ", needless to say I didnt have a clue how to play online RTS , I played the campgain so i knew the basic units and what they do, but thats basicly it, I didnt even figure out you should build more workers. first game i got cannon rushed and I was amazed - I said to myself : " no way you allowed to build things in your enemy's base" ofc i lost all 5 placment matches and got placed in bronze.
from there I started to learn how to play RTS games , found TL and started learning , once i figured out you should use hotkeys, things started to roll fast , i got promoted to silver the next season , and gold the one after, than i stopped playing due to uni and stuff , came back 4 months later , got dropped to silver than back to gold and plat. in the summer of 2011 I stopped playing after being ranked top plat for 2 seasons. cameback 2 months ago go placed in plat -> dropped to gold -> 2 weeks after promoted back to plat and now im plat trying to get daimond or higher.

I was Bronze near the end of last season and during a game on Antiga my opponent asked me which league I was in and I told him "br" and we played our game. He didn't harass any of my expos so I made a lot and by the end of the game when I had just more stuff than him, he said "lol you are not bronze" and gg'd out. Sho'nuff when I got back to the menus I had been promoted to Silver.

Well I started in season 2. I was but a lowly bronze played. I chose Protoss because they were a nobal and proud race and with them I could bring honor to the battlefield. Which roughly equates to me doing a 4 gate every game. So with the power of cheese I ascended my bronze rank and became a top 8 silver player. I would GG if my 4 gate failed and never made the colossus or another nexus. But soon I found my self lossing 80% of the games I played and I was done for. That is until season 4, whats this I can expand? So I started to fast expand every game and even though I lost 50% of my games to rushes I was able to make 2 bases! In season 5 and 6 I played a marco random, I never cheesed and I always would fast expand. Then I switched to full time zerg because they're awesome. I've been playing Zerg ever since. I got promoted to Gold in Season 8, it was a ZvZ in which I was 10 pooled. I as normal 15 hatched. I held it off and then proceeded to crush my way through the game. Every attacker made was shut down, I contained him at 3 bases while was on 6. Like Day9 says "as Zerg always win on hive" so I did with my 6 brood loads, 10 corrupters, 15 infestors and numerous ultras I destroyed everything that stood in my way and finaly a GG. After the game It promoted me.

Went from bronze in season 1 to master which I made last season, I remember each promotion :D
|
Played my first 5 placement matches as terran with little broodwar experience and was placed into low bronze, i started to experiment with races switching to terran and toss, zerg etc (i'd also post about it on facebook) finally one of my friends on facebook got annoyed at my posts, turns out he was plat zerg. He then taught me how to mass mutas and a move (kinda the basics and stuff.) I learn 14 pool 15 hatch and transitioned into muta speedling every game, i was winning about 60% of all my games by the time my first season ended. I was so excited for the second season, thinking i'd be promoted to silver no doubt. Played my placement match and back in bronze. I was so depressed, I thought i'd be bronze forever. One day I was just casually playing and BOOM "You have been promoted to Silver!" I flipped shit. I did a backflip on my bed and hugged my cat so hard, I also scraped my knee after doing some soccer slide across my carpet.
|
My final game to promote into master's was a tvp where I thought the protoss was a zerg because he had the mutalisk portrait... so I opened reactor hellion FE and then realized upon scouting him that it was a toss. I started panicking and just said to myself "screw it" and added on more factories and went mech. I somehow managed to do a BFH runby thata picked off 25 probes and a few sentries and when he finally moved out with his stalker/colossus ball my siege tanks just annihilated him and I ended up getting promoted.

Had been diamond for 5 seasons .. playing a lot of masters players and actually beating a fair amount of them. Around the end of last season i was getting really sick of the ELO system not moving me up when i was already even against masters. The current season came around and i went into my placement match and my opponent left the game instantly. At the score screen his league emblem loaded first and i saw it was a top 8 diamond. My heart sank as i waited to see the same for myself, then as it loaded i saw the blue star and legit screamed. Happiest video game moment of my life.
it took me a year but i am finally a masters player :D

Last season i managed to go from platinum do master (low master league). Unfortunatly, they removed low-high master leagues so after placement match loss i am back on diamond now. hehe
|
this post puts me on the right mood for laddering :p
|
Getting master after beating mid master lvl player who is from same clan as i am.
|
i was demoted to plat last season and i only played 6 games(4w/2l) i didnt ladder for 8 weeks and played my placement match for this season, i lost and promoted to diamond league.
|
I was stuck in platinum for months trying to play macro games against my opponent. It was then i realized if I wanted to advance to diamond I would have to learn how to scout my opponents build and kill them. I used the 1-1-2 or proxy factory to punish fast expanding Protoss, proxy marauder or hellion marine drop against Terran who fast expand and then either 3 rax or 2 rax factory to punish greedy 4-6 queen Zerg play.
My game to get to diamond was on daybreak and I flew a factory into the corner of his base and won after killing all of his probes (his stalker was trying to poke at my ramp

After over 1.5 years of being a lowly diamond, I came back to WoL for a bit after HoTS beta. Playing something a little different had refreshed me a little and I was playing much more solidly and creatively. Went on quite the winning streak. Decided to skip a class today because I was already late and play SC2. Played vs a Terran on Anita close pos. Saw him move out extra SCVs under my ovie really early on so I was suspicious, but no attack came. He ended up doing an awful proxy four rax that I held off with 3 queens and slowlings. I saw he never expanded, so I just kept pumping lings. Once speed kicked in I ran over his marines and took care of his proxies to secure the W

After being stuck in Plat for about 4 seasons, I finally made it to diamond on tues. I immediately stopped for the night and enjoyed it. Last night was my first foray in to the new league, and I promptly lost 7 straight. Granted 4 of those were loss to randoms cheesing me, but still, not a good way to start off.

I was first platinum the highest back in the early days of sc2? Then i went to diamond when that was the highest. And then masters league when it came out. Grand masters when it came out and pretty much been GM on every server even KR since then. I stopped playing early this season when i reached my goal " being grand masters on every server for several seasons" I even reached top 1 world 2 seasons so I'm quite happy! Playing LoL atm and might comeback for HoTS to play competitively we will see what happens with that.

Played in Diamond for quite a long time, last season was rank 1 for a long time and didnt get promoted. This season, im doing terribly bad, sitting on rank 20 or so. Then i meet this Masters-Zerg player. Being mad from some frustrating games before, i just went immortal allin, beating his mutaplay. I Instantly get promoted to masters. I feel so bad about it.
