Hello there! After obtaining the zerg symbol last weekend by making numerous comments in the homestory cup thread made by Take, I decided its time to live up to my symbol and prove to y'all I'm a worthy zergling..

So this thread is about the Homestory Cup from last weekend (15 and 16 January 2011) and maybe other offline StarCraft 2 events. The goal of this thread is to collect opinions about the event and make suggestions for the future.

[The Roccat Kova plus is capable of using up to THREETHOUSANDTWOHUNDRED DEE PEE AII]

So the Homestory Cup, a brief summary for those living under a rock and missed it: was a event organised by Dennis 'Take' Gehlen and HomerJ. These two handsome guys are crazy in love with StarCraft 2. They organised a 16 player, 2 day tournament from Dennis' appartment. 10 of the 16 players came over to the appartment to play and have fun while 6 players joined online.

[TaKe touring around to show where its all gonna happen.]

Now as always its very easy to crack something down but harder to compliment it. I will think of various subjects and add constructive criticism but also give each subject at least 1 compliment.

The stream.
+ super high quality! The free stream was super and the premium stream was even more intense.
+ staying cool while the stream went down, down, down. Props for ToD for keeping the focus on the game.
- The stream went down countless times the first day. This had probally something to do with Ddos attacks. This could have been spotted earlier by staying in contact with the community at TL.net, gosugamers or mIRC.

The prizes.
+ A medal for everyone!
+ Nice trophies for the top 3, although I agree with ToD that the second prize looks nicer than the first prize.
+ 2800 euro prizepool.
+ Nice gamegear for the viewers at home.
- not clear how to win the gamegear... I was interrested to say the least, but I never really found out how to compete for the prizes.

The players.
+ A super strong lineup of player was gathered for this event and this made all the matches interresting.
- Too bad not all of the players could make it to the offline event, this would have made it complete.
- + Show Spoiler +
the top 3 was not at Dennis' appartment so the prices could not been handed to them.

[left to right: ?, Socke, RotterdaM, Take, Naama, Haypro, HasuObs, DeMusliM, ?, Zatic, Dimaga]

The camera.
+ several cams around the house showing players practising and playing.
+ Nice viewing quality.
- Could have been so much more! Why not pick one guy who walks around the house with the camera, instead of a static camera showing DeMusliM playing for 3 hours.
- Could have been so much more! Why not show the chill room with maybe some interviews.

Interaction with the community.
+ posting several video's before the event. Warming up your crowd and creating support.
+ Prizes for the viewers, only euro 2,50- for premium stream.
- No direct interaction. Interviews players asking question posted by the community (gsl-style).
- What game does the community wanna see. (you did this for the first game).
- what does the community wanna see between matches.
- What is the current standing of the event? Who is out? What is the next match? You made a beautiful poster with pictures of all the players, but I never even once saw it on the stream. Sadface.

Casting.
+ Haypro, cloud, Dimaga cast..! Amazing to hear them talk about the games. Super idea to use players as casters.
+ sound quality was amazing.
+ SIXTEENHUNDRED DEE PEE AIII!!
+ ToD + Rottie always funny.
-TaKe casting. He tried hard, but it was clear for everyone watching the stream he had other things on his mind and rightfully so! As a the lead-organiser of a event you shouldn't be doing things that need so much focus. Keep the broad view of what is happening and leave details to others.
- The spectator. This became better when the tournament came along but was not good. The sensitivity of the scrolling speed was way too high so it all looked super jerky + the spectator missed a lot of drops, mistakes, fights. The gsl-spectator does a very good job, if you need a example.

O.K. Enough. Your turn. What did you think of this event or other offline StarCraft 2 events? What would you suggest?
I will keep this thread updated.

Thanks,
Tiazi out!

EDIT: Feel the need to point out that I loved the event. I tried to not sound negative which is not hard because I'm not. I made this thread to help future editions even more awesome. Nothing more, nothing less.

Looked like you guys had a lot of fun there Nice games too though it was a bit protoss heavy in the end :/ Too much PvP for me

Stream quality was fantastic and it was nice to see players taking turns in casting and commentating Looking forward for more of this kind of stuff!

All the Homestory cup II needed was Haypr0 getting a lapdance

i mean, DarkForcE looked like he enjoyed it !

but yeah the event was fucking amazing, i will try to think of some good ideas, but honestly it was mor or less perfect(other than ddot'ers), it i so much more awesome to see all the pro players in a relaxed Lan party event, having fun, drinking, trolling one another(loved the side comments from people) and so on.

I thought exactly the same thing while watching it, however, I think he is a really good caster but u could saw that he had other things on his mind which is tottaly understandable. But we will all agree on it that it was an amazing event and I hope he can keep it up and we will see a third Homestory-Cup. Does Anybody know if it was an financial success for him?

It's sad that he promised interviews with the players in between, that he did not show the bracket made by his girlfriend and the camera was static at most times. but after the stream problems he probably lost track of the stuff he could have done. was great anyways!

also your list is more or less complete so # to it.

More interviews with the players would be great but overall it was a really nice event. The positive points far outweigh the negative ones.

Are you one of those people who seems to spend more time criticizing casters & events than playing SC2? In the time it took you to type up that novel length-OP you could've upped your B.net rank by 300 points.

Take did a great job providing the community with free content, the event was superb.

although i agree in most of the points, but it is complaining on a high level.

the first thing would really have been nice, but may have been related with even more ddos (i don't know how easy or hard it is to hide the ip address)
second point may have been nice but they probably just had to much stuff to do, not really a problem imo
the third point is kind of true, but i think they picked the games that most people wanted to see anyways (atleast in the mostly german chat)

yeah i think it was great to but although its not intended but if somebody just saw the OP i don't think its obvious.

Yeah! That's what i'm talking about. You can only laugh at the awkwardness of the situation. Damn, i specially like two moments:

- Darkforce getting kicked by the stripper to make him open the legs a little.

- Darkforce hovering hand when she tries to slide over his knees, she almost fall because she was waiting for some kind of support from his arms.

Really, i was waiting for more awkward moments from my favorites players.

Homerj doesn't work for the esl btw. He works with a team that has pretty much nothing to do with the ESL. Homerj and Take just wanted to do something together, which unfortunately was prevented by a tragic event in Homerj's family

@dizzy101

Why so offensive? He clearly said it should be CONSTRUCTIVE criticism and that's what it is.

OT:

The event was fantastic. Best cup in a long time. The DDoS attacks kinda ruined the whole saturday. The casting of the different players was awesome. I also missed some interviews. For example I never saw Adelscott talking. If he didn't want to cast or something, let him have an interview. Same with Haypro (he did cast in the end) and others. Would have been really nice!

Some updates on the brackets were also missing. Of course there was a bracket online, but would have been nice if you showed it sometimes in the stream.

The thing I really missed was interaction with the community. I saw the guys watching the TL page constantly, so it would have been nice if we had a place to ask questions or comments. For example TaKe was half of sunday very loud, the other 2 very silent (I think the mic was too far away). Nobody could make a comment about this.
Maybe just check with the community every hour or so and ask if everything is okay, that would be nice!

One other thing: the camera behind the players during matches was fantastic, I really liked it. The simultaneous view during matches was also nice. Would be awesome if we could choose between them or if you always show it as a small box during the matches.

This was a lot criticism from my side, I didn't mention the positive aspects. As I said, I really liked the event, I followed it nearly whole saturday and whole sunday as a premium user. The criticism is pretty high level, I just want to say what you could make even better in my opinion. Otherwise it was perfect, as the OP said.
I hope you can someday repeat it and host HomeStory Cup 3!

Of course I also want to thank the players themselves who showed up. Seems you had a lot of fun

Nice writeup.
I kind of agree with your points of camera and interaction. They could have done some other things instead of playing music between the games, when you have all those guys there anyways... But besides those small points it was a really great event. I really hope there will be a 3rd one.

Yeah, everyone should stop contributing to the community and just grind the B.net ladder for maximum rank.
Who cares about translations, coverage, summaries, interviews anyways?

He wanted to provide feedback (for Take) and he's done a good job in that.
I also want to 2nd the "interview with players" stuff. It's a great opportunity (they're all there and can answer^^). I also really liked the anecdotes from the players during casting. Maybe we can get more of that next time.
Also Take - get a bigger home so you can fit more live players in there :D

Nice summary!

I looooved the event. It was so nice to see tip-top players from Europe come together and duke it out in a great tournament with a great atmosphere of chill and relaxing. It was so epic and a really nice break from GLS/MLG where everything is competetive.

This tournament was a really nice contrast and I hope to see HomeStory cup 3 soon. We need the diversity of different types of tournaments!

On a side note... Go Europe side SC2!! :-)

Amazing writeup and an amazing tournament overall. Very well run, even with the few stream difficulties, and they were nice enough to cast the finals of the #73rd GO4SC2 tournament.

It's awesome, and im proud of the european sc2 scene for this, Take is amazing for putting up so much nerve-wacking work to get this done again, he needs a lot of appreciation from the community for this one, so DANKE SCHON DENNIS, DU BIST DAS BESTE!

Watched the whole event on premium stream and loved it.
Having such great players commentate games was just so good

Two points that could make it even better next time for me:
- More interaction, like questions from the viewers to the players.
- Try to inform the viewers how long the breaks between games are gonna last.

No the guy with the CJ Entus shirt is Zatic. The guy in the white shirt is some guy from the ESL to help take steup the whole thing.

(the other seem to watch the Reddit Final, you can hear some comments of Dimaga for example)

2nd vid has nothing to do with reddit final
But it's still awesome to hear their opinion about food (Chili con carne!), balloons (Take is playing with them), stupid fanboys spamming their main accounts (and inviting them to channels) & and some misprinted SC2 DVD which the trader (and Blizzard) doesnt want to return

I agree with most what the OP said. However, I thought Take casting was ok, because he was the only one doing a normal cast. The pros were either going deep into topics or joking. Also, i think the camerawork was enough. I didnt need to see everything. A few interviews after the matches would have been good. For me the only sad thing was that online players were allowed. They should only have allowed offline players, to underline this unique LAN feeling.

For a setup like that, it was incredibly well done and you can't expect it to get much better. Well done

the Lapdance vid was epic btw :D

Great, looking forward to it. Always good to have someone also listening to input without getting offended - I hope you know, that it was an absolutely amazing event.

The 2.50€ for the premium stream were also a great offer. I don't watch ESL other than some events like this one or the Extreme Masters, so I would have never bought anything else.

At first I want - yet again - emphazise that I loved this event. I only wrote down some things I missed/didn't like because nobody can profit from one page of things I really enjoyed

- as already mentioned, player interviews! There was always a bit of a downtime, and as much as I laughed during the awsome interaction between especially Demuslim and ToD, this time could've been used to quickly ask the players who just finished their games to comment on it. What they think happened, why they think they won, in case they lost, what they think their mistakes were, etc. Just like the usual interviews after sporting-events, nothing spectacular, simply some quick thoughts.

- REPLAYS: some players and the admin uploaded some replays immediately after the respective matches (in particular I recall Mana and Naniwa uploading some of their games) but many of them were missing. I know it is probably a bit annoying for the players themselves, but - same as in everyday's life - if everyone contributes, then I think it's not that big of an effort. Uploading replays on the ESL page is really easy, if you are a player of the tournament you can upload the games directly on-site and they are automaticly linked to the spot where they belong. I know, I can't request Take to do this during the event too, not possible. What I think is, that each and every participating player should be asked to upload reps after the game. There are two players in each match, so if only one of them abides by this small rule it's a huge win for the community.

about the replays.

i didnt want all replays be on the page directly after they played cause i wanted to do some replaycasts and bring the vods on before.

I am collecting all replays since yesterday and we make a huge package out of it and you can download them all

Thanks. I enjoyed your stream.

For next time: what about a long discussion with the players about their current issues/strategies/concepts and insights on the game ? I would love to hear them in a way like SOTG podcast.
